WFNX being sold to Clear Channel

WROR is very lame.

I'll assume at this point that you've taken note of the fact that the "lame" station is still around, while its former competitor isn't. Most owners I know would love to be "lame" like that.

Of course I've taken note of that. I realize that being boring and taking no chances works, but I don't have to like it.

So what about Mia? Do you think that format would work on 101.7?

Boston Radio Watch has a poll about what the new format might be. 35 or so say news talk. In the single digits are oldies-classic rock, Spanish, etc. but what do we know. (I voted for news talk but am thinking a "mike"-like station could be more likely.)

I'm kind of out of the loop these days but is there a buzz or anticipation in Boston about the switch for 101.7 FM? This thread is on page 37 now so obviously there is interest here on this website but what about the average listener?

He could well be pulling our legs but WXKS AM (Talk 1200)'s Jeff Katz just said on Facebook: "it occurred to me as i was driving home today there's way too much music being played on the fm side of the radio"

Again he may just be joshing. Let's not Rush to judgement here.

Even if the plan is to shift Talk 1200 to 101.7, Jeff Katz (and anyone else not higher up) would most likely not be in the loop about the plans. He would probably find out at the latest possible moment before the flip (or not until they actually do it).

Yes, and that's why I say he's probably funnin' us. Talent often is the last to find out...especially at those times when you get called into the office and are informed the format is changing now or later today, so, get your desk cleaned out and buh bye.

Jimmy 128:

For the short term (maybe a few weeks or a month or two), WKOX-1430 could simulcast WHBA-101.7 if the latter becomes a contemporary Spanish-language music station (as I think it will).

Beyond that, I could see some sort of Spanish-language talk format, either one being launched by Univision on a 24/7 basis, or Spanish-language sports with ESPN Deportes 24/7.

If it's the latter, the station could try to snag Spanish-language radio broadcast rights to Boston's pro teams. As far as I know, while the Red Sox have Spanish-language radio coverage (I don't know when the current deal ends), but the Patriots, Bruins, Celtics, and Revolution do not.

I believe most MLB teams and many NFL and MLS teams have Spanish-language radio coverage; but I think there are only a very few teams each in the NHL (N.Y. Rangers, Florida, Dallas, and Los Angeles?) and NBA (New York, Miami, Dallas, L.A. Lakers, Phoenix?) with Spanish-language radio broadcasts.

Were Spanish-language radio broadcasts of the Bruins and Celtics to be launched, regular-season coverage would probably be restricted to home games, since Spanish-language broadcasts of these sports would be experimental, and by restricting coverage to home games, costs would be minimized (no travel costs for announcers, etc.).

@Joseph, It was pointed out to me by NHRadio that the signal for 1430 am would not be too good for Spanish sports at night especially in the North Shore where there is a large Spanish population.

With the money that CC is willing to spend, I wonder if they would spend a lot of money and switch frequencies with WWZN 1510 and put Spanish sports there.

But I really think that Mia is going to 101.7, although the Nashua NH station Frank FM beat the Great WGBH in the ratings. (Love it). ;D

Well, amigo. Nobody in the Hispanic market listens to or watches hockey. I believe that the station would do Spanish language Celtics and Revolution broadcasts. And they might carry a few live Mexican soccer broadcasts from Univision Radio.

Or they could get Sox in Spanish, now on WWZN (and ticking off prog talk fans due to pre-emptions).
If they did go Spanish, good farewell tune: Mexican Radio, Wall of Voodoo (I hear the talking of the DJ,
can't understand just what does he say/ I understand just a little, no comprende, it's a riddle)

A Spanish sports station would only concentrate on baseball. They are huge baseball fans in the North Shore. You should have been at Salem's Point neighborhood when the

Red Sox won in '04 & '07.

Maybe Celtics & Revs. Yeah definitely no hockey eh?

C'mon, are you messing with us? Everybody knows that WFNX will change their call letters to WHBA and will become a furniture restoration talk station.

I'll add this to the mix: harbor1017.com, 1017theharbor.com, 1017thebay.com, and several others were registered today. But not in Clear Channel's name… more anonymous registrations.

Has this ever worked? Has CC or any other chain ever been a victim of one of these pre-emptive domain-name strikes and had to pay some wiseass kid in his mom's basement or some professional domain squatter in Romania big bucks for the name?

The format is supposedly going to change tomorrow, and the real new website will have to go up. It's a case of imminent domain. :D

If WFNX is leaving the airwaves at 7pm tomorrow as I've been reading, my guess is that the weekend will either be stunting or perhaps a generic stream of alternative songs until Monday, when a new format arrives. It is really weird that nothing has been leaked or promoted yet. Could that have been in the sales agreement to not have any promotion of the "new" station prior to WFNX's sign-off?

If either of these ends up being the name, its looking like the return of Adult Hits.

I noticed today that their processing seemed very different. It was much flatter. The processing seemed more appropriate for a talk station. Call me crazy but I wonder if anyone else has noticed this or if I should get my ears checked (for the record every other station on the dial sounds the same as it always has). I also am noticing that the signal actually seems weaker the past couple days (again, maybe I am imagining this). As someone who has been in the business for many years, I feel that I have a very keen ear for these things.
