I can assure you I am neither. Everything that I do or say is legit save for the fact that it is tempered by FCC regulations. Believe me, I didn't ask to be named "Special Ed". In fact, it was probably given to me because those who named me never figured I would have a full-time gig. I would much rather be known as "Cru Jones". Are there idiot characters and stunt boys in radio? Yes. I don't think I fall into that category. If my name were Mike or Tom my comments would probably be taken as being crude or non-PC. I can understand that when you factor in my name how you can reach the conclusion that I might be acting. Ask any girl I have dated, she will tell you I am really like this.
And we produce all our stuff.

I don't see how the name Special Ed is hacky. It is just a name. I mean, T&R do have a guy 40-year-old guy named "Crash", right? Not a slam on Crash. Just a counter-point to your observations. If you believe that Adolfo is as "real deal" as you think I have a bridge to sell you. Again, not a slam but things tend to get embellished for the sake of a good story on radio.
As far as the name of the show... I am pretty sure we are the only one out there called "The Sandbox". We chose the name based on the philosophy of the show, which is that everyone is welcome to play. Remember being a kid and playing with everyone? You didn't care where they were from, what they believed or what they looked like. You just wanted to hang out and play. That's the story behind the name. Sorry if you took it so literally but no, we don't broadcast from a sandbox.
As far as recorded bits we go we don't really mess with them. We tried early on and it was a disaster. We don't do parody songs (unless you count my sports intros which run about 20 seconds and are just funny) or prank phone calls either.
The "FU Line" belongs to The Regular Guys out of Atlanta. The WTF Line is ours (781-595-1017). We have openly stated on the air that it is basically our version of EEI's Whiner Line. It is a tried and true radio staple which no one currently on the air can stake claim to creating. It is just a good way for listeners to get involved in the show. Which is the philosophy of our show as I stated above.
You might not think that we are new or original but we recently got praised by some industry folks you might know. None other than Toucher and Rich said (on the air during their show) that we were better than the majority than the morning shows in town. As fans of their show we felt pretty good about the compliment.
I don't think our show sounds anything like a "morning zoo". We don't do zany bits, prank calls, have a stunt boy or ring a bell when someone makes a joke. We are very news and topic oriented and look to our listeners to contribute their opinions on our subjects rather than talking amongst ourselves for 4 hours. Try not to focus so much on my name. As Shakespeare wrote, "What is in a name?"
See? Hacky, stunt boys don't make such deep literary references, do they?

I commute from Maynard to Marlboro every morning and usually pick up 101.7 fairly well. However this morning the signal was just being drowned out by another station.
I thought it was some sort of pirate at first. Finally picked up some sort of call sign and it was 101.7 The Beach/WBEA-FM blasting in from Southold, NY!
So is 'FNX working on their transmitter or was it some sort weird atmospheric effect causing me to pick up the Long Island station loud and clear in Marlboro, MA? ???

Nothing wrong with 'FNX's transmitter, you were getting tropo. Lots of other stations were bleeding through on normally local stations. I got stations from Maine and CT the other nite on the way home. FNX came in clear again today like normal. This tropo thing happens every now and then, especially in the spring and summer months. It basically is good for dxing and makes distant stations come in like locals and vice versa. Every now and then you'll hear the CT stations on 93.7 and 104.1 bleeding through WBCN and WMKK!!
