WFNX Ratings performance

Something that I have wondered about, why don't they utilize Julie Kramer when it comes to playing the retro New Wave/Punk/Synth Pop stuff? Do they not use her because of lack of credentials, or is it that she is just not interested in moving more into the MD/PD chair position instead?

I am not allowed get into specific numbers regarding Arbitron ratings but the Fall '07 ratings were the highest the mornings had seen since the late '90s.

I can get specific on how I like my steaks. Medium-rare with sautéed mushrooms.

Hopefully "The Sandbox" will be able to beat the "Man Love Morning Show" on WAAF. It really shouldn't be that difficult to do.

One thing I find funny is how every show tries to have the "crazy/idiot" guy like Spaz, or Special Ed but it is always someone trying to play the part and comes off as really fake and stupid. At least Toucher and Rich hired a real imbicile which makes it actually funny as opposed to someone acting like they are crazy/stupid.

I also hope "The Sandbox" produces its own "bits" instead of buying them from a service like some other shows [COUGH] hillman [COUGH]. That is really sad when you can't come up with and produce your own bits.

NSPUNX, are you calling me fake and stupid? In case you are here is my response. If you are making a broad generalization, well, enjoy the read.

I can assure you I am neither. Everything that I do or say is legit save for the fact that it is tempered by FCC regulations. Believe me, I didn't ask to be named "Special Ed". In fact, it was probably given to me because those who named me never figured I would have a full-time gig. I would much rather be known as "Cru Jones". Are there idiot characters and stunt boys in radio? Yes. I don't think I fall into that category. If my name were Mike or Tom my comments would probably be taken as being crude or non-PC. I can understand that when you factor in my name how you can reach the conclusion that I might be acting. Ask any girl I have dated, she will tell you I am really like this.

And we produce all our stuff.

high five for the "Rad" reference....haha cru jones...

what I am saying is that from what I have heard your not in any way stupid or crazy or have any kind of mental defect and that having the name "special ed" is hacky and just like every other show in existance. Why not do something different? Adalfo is different because he is the real deal, O and A don't have to resort to that level of hack. Every small market morning show has a "spaz" or a "special ed" or some kind of trying to hard to sound demented stunt boy. I mean come on even the name "The sandbox" is hacky like "the morning zoo" do you broadcast from a sandbox? I just thought that FNX being an independant station would not have to resort to the same old tired hacky morning show that every corporate radio station does. I mean come on you guys have an FU line just like EVERY OTHER STATION IN THE WORLD! What do you do that is new and original? Please enlighten me and prove me wrong what do you do that no one else does, that is not another hacky song parody or other tired hacky bit?

You must be a reeeaaaally big T&R fan.

I don't see how the name Special Ed is hacky. It is just a name. I mean, T&R do have a guy 40-year-old guy named "Crash", right? Not a slam on Crash. Just a counter-point to your observations. If you believe that Adolfo is as "real deal" as you think I have a bridge to sell you. Again, not a slam but things tend to get embellished for the sake of a good story on radio.

As far as the name of the show... I am pretty sure we are the only one out there called "The Sandbox". We chose the name based on the philosophy of the show, which is that everyone is welcome to play. Remember being a kid and playing with everyone? You didn't care where they were from, what they believed or what they looked like. You just wanted to hang out and play. That's the story behind the name. Sorry if you took it so literally but no, we don't broadcast from a sandbox.

As far as recorded bits we go we don't really mess with them. We tried early on and it was a disaster. We don't do parody songs (unless you count my sports intros which run about 20 seconds and are just funny) or prank phone calls either.

The "FU Line" belongs to The Regular Guys out of Atlanta. The WTF Line is ours (781-595-1017). We have openly stated on the air that it is basically our version of EEI's Whiner Line. It is a tried and true radio staple which no one currently on the air can stake claim to creating. It is just a good way for listeners to get involved in the show. Which is the philosophy of our show as I stated above.

You might not think that we are new or original but we recently got praised by some industry folks you might know. None other than Toucher and Rich said (on the air during their show) that we were better than the majority than the morning shows in town. As fans of their show we felt pretty good about the compliment.

I don't think our show sounds anything like a "morning zoo". We don't do zany bits, prank calls, have a stunt boy or ring a bell when someone makes a joke. We are very news and topic oriented and look to our listeners to contribute their opinions on our subjects rather than talking amongst ourselves for 4 hours. Try not to focus so much on my name. As Shakespeare wrote, "What is in a name?"

See? Hacky, stunt boys don't make such deep literary references, do they?

Sorry for the tone of my previous post, I am impressed that you didn't take the bait and very happy that you calmly and intelligently proved me wrong. I have listened to your show and do think it is better than "mantown" and the "morning buzz". When I first heard the name "Special Ed" I immediately thought of the Comedy Central show "Crank Yankers" and figured it was a rip off. Apparently I was wrong and you've had the name for a long time. I am sorry for trying to bait you into an argument I just learned a long time ago that people with real talent who work hard will be able to calmly make intelligent counter points and state thier case in a professional way, people who are "hacks" and have no talent will fly off the handle, start to insult others, and say things like "Well I have a morning show what do you have etc..." which you did not in any way do. It is no secret that I am a big fan of WBCN, Toucher and Rich, and Opie and Anthony. As I said I have listened to your show here and there and it is very good. I also know that O and A have an FU line too. I have met Adalfo and Intern Nick and I don't know maybe they are just real good actors but when I met them it was at the station hours before the show and it was an informal quick hello type thing and I got the impression that he was the real deal. I also heard the T and R break with you guys. As I said I actually do like your show and I really hope you beat "mantown" because that show I really do hate. I hope you guys keep up the good work and keep the sand plentiful and clean!

The the only time I listen to 'FNX is 'Leftover Lunch' weekdays 12noon -12:50pm.This is usually a very good hour of radio.

I think the Sandbox is def the best morning show on 'FNX in years, going back to "That guy Tai." Def quality stuff and I'm usually listening. Glad to hear T&R can talk good about talent on other stations too.

Personally I love WFNX, it's too bad I cant pick up their station outside of the immediate Boston area. Id listen to them all the time.

Dont worry about stealing from WEEI they stole the whiner line idea from the chump line on WRKO during Howie Carr's show.

Hey you guys won a "Chachi!"

Please, Please, Don't Ruin Our Event!

Here's your "Chachi!"

(The Chachi's are the Toucher and Rich's shows weekly award segment where they dole out awards to thier guests, listeners, rivals, and themselves named after the "classiest" man in Radio... Chachi!)

Also, in all fairness I did take issue with T and R for stealing "Keith's Stupid Game" and changing it to "Fred's Crappy Game" so I will even call my "heroes" on it.

Sort of related, but anyone know what was up with 'FNX's signal this morning?

I commute from Maynard to Marlboro every morning and usually pick up 101.7 fairly well. However this morning the signal was just being drowned out by another station.

I thought it was some sort of pirate at first. Finally picked up some sort of call sign and it was 101.7 The Beach/WBEA-FM blasting in from Southold, NY!

So is 'FNX working on their transmitter or was it some sort weird atmospheric effect causing me to pick up the Long Island station loud and clear in Marlboro, MA? ???

Nothing wrong with 'FNX's transmitter, you were getting tropo. Lots of other stations were bleeding through on normally local stations. I got stations from Maine and CT the other nite on the way home. FNX came in clear again today like normal. This tropo thing happens every now and then, especially in the spring and summer months. It basically is good for dxing and makes distant stations come in like locals and vice versa. Every now and then you'll hear the CT stations on 93.7 and 104.1 bleeding through WBCN and WMKK!!
