WFNX Top 500 Countdown of All Time Question and Comments

I worked there from 1987-1996 and that was NEVER a policy in the FNX programming department. The fact that FNX ran an image campaign called "we played it first" for a number of years is proof of that. The campaign was designed to remind listeners who we shared with other stations that the songs they were hearing elsewhere originated with FNX.

I agree that it was a ZBC policy, though. We had several ZBC interns who loved to tell us that, for some reason.

Well, this was more specifically before '87. I do not know if they changed their rules or not by that point. But as a listener, it was very noticeable.

BTW, did the DJ's have a lot of freedom on what was played or not? Just wondering.

For the most part, I do not believe so.

I sat in on the morning show a few times back in the early 90's and while I was there, I distinctly remember Tai using some sort of multi-colored index card system to determine what song was to be played next. The cards were kept in a little file box, probably not any bigger than a 6-pack box of Pop Tarts.

He explained the system to me once but it went over my head... but then again that was a long time ago...

#331 Eve 6 - Inside Out

#334 Eve 6 - Inside Out

(WTF!)

...was this done on purpose, or is it a typo?? (And if it is in fact a typo, does anyone know what the other song really was)

That reminds me, I was gonna post a countdown of the top songs on WRKO of 1978, but decided not too when it listed ABBA's take A Chance On Me twice. I decided that discredited its authenticity instead. ???

I just remembered, don't know if they "broke" it or not, but FNX played the heck outta "Learning To Fly" by Tom Petty when it first came out...

yeah, it does make the list seem a little less "unofficial", doesn't it?

I can't imagine FNX doing that On The Air, and if that was in fact the list in front of the jock I'm sure they would have caught that well in advance and a prompt call to the pd/md would have been made...

So the question remains: What was played in its place? One of the songs that has been mentioned in this thread, perhaps! ;)

Maybe someone could either email or call the station and ask?

Anyone? ???

Also, has anyone else noticed that there are no 10,000 maniacs on this list. Weren't they one of the station's most played artists during the 80's and early 90's?

Seemed to be, oh something else that I noticed, FNX is now starting to play a lot of the songs that Mix made popular whrn they first came out also.

Since when is Tom Petty considered an "alternative" act? What's next, Van Halen?

That was back in 1991. They don't play Tom Petty anymore.
