WGFY

Disney is selling some of their AM's in smaller to medium market, don't be surprised if WGFY is put up for sale, which could open the opportunity for someone like WAVO to purchase it to move their current format here, if they can get their transmitter at 1480 tuned right

But they're the ones who sold it to Disney.

No one would listen when the music was on AM. That's why they added the FM.

They need to improve the HD audio also...it blows! Muddy! All that $$$ for IBOC and sounds that bad....geezz. ???

WGFY was sold on 05-05-2015 and has gone dark, while a new Studio is being built. So far I've not heard about what, if anything, will be done with the Tower and Antenna. Probably not much since the new Buyer is affiliated with a Religious Institution. They paid $ 600,000 for the Station. Wow! Steve.

Are there any other Charlotte stations that broadcast AM HD Radio? For some reason WBT does not, nor WSB in Atlanta. But I know WLW in Cincinatti has a very strong HD signal, as it was locking on last time I was in Lexington, Kentucky. HD Radio sounds good when done right, especially on AM where it eliminates the static.

Supposedly 610 The Fan and 1660 AM are still transmitting in HD, however I've not been able to get a Signal Lock for well over a week now. Tried in AM and PM Hours, Sunny and Cloudy Conditions. So far, no go. No matter what I try. Steve.

I can confirm that the Beasley folks did turn the IBOC off 610 and 1660 a month or so ago. While it does improve the audio quality if you have a receiver it degrades the audio quality on non-HD receivers. A station must limit their analog bandwidth on AM in order to make room for the digital carrier.

I am of the opinion that something needs to be done to improve the AM band but IBOC is not the answer. It works well on FM where there is enough bandwidth for sub-channels but causes more issues than it solves on AM.

The audio quality on 1480 has been poor for years. Back in the day when 1480 was WWOK and WAME it did very well in the ratings. Helped it was the main Country station back then. I hope the new owners will put some effort into making sound better.

When I was at UNCC 3 years ago the signal on 1480 was very good even at night. Most of the other Charlotte AMs had listenable signals, even at night. Though I tried WIST its last night on the air and even as close as UNCC, almost nothing. That's when 1240 was limited to 250 watts after dark.

The story is WGFY is off the air while they build new studios. What? In this day and age that should take about an hour or a day at the longest. I'm not talking about a permanent studio but certainly they could come up with a temporary studio quickly if they wanted to? Not that it matters all that much. Another AM that few will listen to.

Today, it should be a snap to put together a temporary studio with semi-pro gear. As you say, a couple of hours.

Even in the "old days" a move could happen fast... I moved 4 stations in 72 hours back in '66. Just a lot heavier gear and a lot more manual wiring....

WGFY was back on the Airwaves today. I found them while playing with the HD Radio today. The ''New'' Recording Studio can't be any better than the ''Old'' One, for: (a) The Audio was only coming out of the Right Channel at first. (b) The Audio then moved to center-channel, before fading out and becoming Left-Channel based. It sounded out of phase, like there may really be a short somewhere between the Studio Equipment and the Transmitter. The HD Signal did stay locked on, so I guess they left the HD Transmit on after buying the Station from Disney. It might as well be a waste however until they manage to clean up their Audio in General. {still sounds terrible}! Steve.
