WGN America

That logo with the woman's eyes looks like a rip-off of the old The Movie Channel logo. It looks scary and evil. It needs to be changed. Since the name is called "WGN America", the logo needs to include the American flag.

They do that, and they'll be criticized for ripping off the old USA logo. Nevertheless, I liked watching Rocky tonight, and will look forward to the 70's themed prime-time slot. Does anyone think they're trying to compete with RTN? How is RTN, btw? I can't get it since DirecTV doesn't recognize local digital subchannels... yet.

WGN is running retro nights starting June 2nd, at least through the 6th, with 2 hours of different classic 70's sitcoms that haven't been on TV Land in several years each night. I don't konw if this a one time special event, but I hope this will become a regular part of their schedule.

From what I read on sitcomsonline.com this is just a special event for 1 week, but that there would be more classic TV added in the future.

The new logo is scary......makes it hard to watch a show without shouting "Stop looking at me!" at the screen. On another note, I think the NHL needs to SERIOUSLY rethink about letting the Chicago Blackhawk games (at least a handful of them) be seen nationally on WGN America. You can put as much lipstick on that pig called VS. all you want, but when the next season rolls around, people will still say "Hockey? Oh yeah, I remember that game. It's on what channel now? Never heard of it." While WGN America still remains a high profile, low and easy to find on the cable channel spectrum. The exposure can only help, not hurt the NHL.

Give it a few years, and most Americans will ask, "What's hockey?", or worse, "What's a hockey?"

WGN America is obviously an un-patriotic venture, much like that lapel-pin dodger named Barack Obama. ::)

Seriously, I think they're trying to get the channel to stand out--and their logo does just that. Give them credit for not going with a simple "text in a square/rectangle/circle/oval" mark that hasn't innovated much.

Interesting quote from the Chicago Sun-Times:

Welcome to 'WGN America'

If the slogan ("TV You Can't Ignore") sounds familiar, that's because it comes right out of Tribune Co. Chief Operating Officer Randy Michaels' bag of tricks. Radio-Info.com notes that when Michaels ran the Jacor broadcast company for Sam Zell in the 1990s, he labeled it: "Radio You Can't Ignore."

;D ;D ;D

My favorite line from Rosenthal's story from Wednesday:
"... the changes have begun for what he (Sam Zell) hopes will be a channel from and for the nation's midsection ..."

Wow. That's where WGN lost its way in the first place, when it shed its Chicago identity and tried to become a station for the entire country. To this day I cringe whenever I hear a program advertised on WGN in Eastern time! Maybe WGN isn't identified with Chicago for everyone, but it is for millions, including me.

In New York, when legendary rocker WNEW-FM was blown up for talk in September 1999 as "FM Talk @ 102.7" their slogan was "The Talk You Can't Ignore".

(My Internet talk station, The Cockroach, sometimes uses that positioner on-air as an homage to the old WNEW-FM - but I digress...)

That WGN-A logo is so very distracting. They need to get rid of it, and find something more patriotic.

I'm sure they will--just as soon as ABC, ABC Family, AMC, Azteca America, BBC America, USA, and American Idol all revamp their respective marks.

I live in Chicago and I think WGN didn't start losing their idenity as a Chgo station till after they went with the WB. I don't really recall seeing the WB on cable any time I lived away from Chicago.

The WB was on the national feed from Jan. 1995 to Oct. 1999. Shedding the WB on the national feed was a huge part of WGN separating its Chicago and national feeds; it adopted different logos for the feeds and from that point, you really never heard "Channel 9" said on any national spots. Of course, they were covering so many local ads by then and showing national-only programming that it had become a separate entity in all but news and sports.

WGN America has some 80's programming on this week. Alf is on tonight, Family Ties is on Tuesday night, and the Cosby Show is on Wednesday night.
