WGN Reception

WGN's PD must believe there are PPMs in Chicago's cemeteries.

For a frame of reference, Sinatra had his last top 40 hit in 1980, with "Theme from New York, New York", peaking at #32. Before that, it was 1969 for "My Way", peaking at #10. Someone who was in college in 1980 is 60 now.

It would be one thing for an oldies formatted station to play a Sinatra/crooners show on weekend mornings. But WGN is just weird.

I don't believe WGN Radio has a person that serves with the title pf Program Director, when Nexstar too over as the owners of WGN Radio, they appointed Sean Compton as executive vice president who had previously served as president of strategic programming and acquisitions for Tribune Broadcasting, you can read the full story https://www.robertfeder.com/2019/09/20/robservations-wgn-radio-new-management/ , and then the Nexstar Media Group fired Todd Manley who had been overseeing WGN Radio and then named Mary Sandberg Boyle the interim boss, she has since got the gig full time. As you can see at https://www.robertfeder.com/2019/09...-one-nexstar-ousts-wgn-radio-station-manager/ , and then a week later they removed Bill Kurtis as the voice of WGN Radio, and then nothing really major again. As you had to wonder what changes were going to be ahead, as you had to figure it wouldn't just be Todd Manley that would take the fall. The next big moves were first to the weekday schedule, with notably the midday schedule with the removal of Bill Leff and Wendy Synder and moving John Williams to mornings and in a 3 hour slot, moving then morning host Steve Cochran to a slot that starts a 5 AM and ends at 9 AM. Now getting to the revamped weekend schedule that saw the addition of the Frank Sinatra Hours which you can read or even re-read at https://www.robertfeder.com/2019/11/26/wgn-radio-turning-totally-sinatra-sunday-mornings/ . And in the article that Robert Feder points out that the Sinatra Hours was the brainchild of Sean Compton. As Paul Harvey would say and now you know, so now you know who to not thank for the Fran Sinatra Hours. While I agree it is weird for a news/talk station like WGN Radio that has been since why 1990 to have a show like this. But what is good about radio is that you have the option to listen or not listen. As there are many other radio stations in Chicago that you can listen to, through I am sure not a lot of them have local programming on weekends or while for the most part. As you notice also added to the schedule is Peter Greenberg's syndicated travel show, the is supposedly suppose to air from 4:00-6:00\, which depends on if WGN Radio is scheduled to air sports broadcasts on Saturday nights, which show far as aired in a lot of time slots a few times in the mornings, but lately has been airing from 3 to 5 PM on Saturday afternoons.

But not totally unique. Philadelphia talk station WPHT has been doing Sundays With Sinatra for years.

And I have taken a look at their schedule where it runs from 11 AM to 1 PM which would be eastern time, but the show must obviously work there, but that doesn't mean it is going to work here. I have seen people comment even on Robert Feder's post haven't looked lately, but so far I haven't sene anybody that is even happy that they are airing him for 2 and a half hors, or even having conversations with what friends and family that he has let alive today. Certainly Nancy Sinatra is still alive, Frank Sinatra Jr is dead. Off the top of your head would you even know for how long they have been running for how many years?

According to this article, the show has been on various stations in Philly for 63 years. And it's sponsored.

As for him being dead, that hasn't affected the popularity of Elvis or The Beatles or The Doors or Jimi Hendrix or lots of other artists who've died. Sinatra has a big fan base. Most of the audience of WGN is over 55, and they all know who Frank Sinatra was.

How the is a long time that they have done the show, where the Sinatra Hours is still more of a new show. People must love the show in Philadelphia otherwise I wouldn't think it would have lasted this long. Don't forget that there are 2 members of the Beatles that are still alive. And there have been a couple of Beatle theme shows called Breakfast with the Beatles. And there used to be Elvis Only that was hosted by Jay Gordon that aired on music stations, but that show is long gone now. Can't think of any other radio shows where it was designed for one artist, whether it be a solo singer, band, or duo.
