WGUN 1010 AM Makes Changes

What great news, 2:00 pm today Wgun began a new program called " The Good Old Days" ! It seems changes are coming to a great Am Signal that was being wasted, now with some new fresh air.. The show is being hosted by Longtime Adult standards fan, Al Hardee. This is so cool.. Now a reason to listen to Am again...

Georgia and her staff work very long hours keeping the motor humming. Brokered religious & product placement programming probably doesn't win many awards, but it pays the bills.

We worked out a deal where some of our students get airtime on 1010 after low power. Good experience and good airchecks.

It's a test to see if a MOYL fill in music format between brokered shows will work and retain the listeners. It should be a good fit. Big Band and Sinatra shows are coming in the future.

That would be good, so sick of religion forced down your throat. Still it is a mediorce 50k signal, just like 1160.

The 4 hour standards show was well received with about 15 calls within the first hour. Not bad for something that just came on with really no promotion. WGUN will still have brokered shows and special shows on the weekends along with paid shows. The MOYL will be fill music and in overnights. Hopefully it will work out for am 1010. BTW they have filed to come on with 45,000 watts going to 50.000 watts 2 hrs. after sunrise and droping the 10,000 watt sign on.

I know we touched on this briefly before, but what is WGUN's actual licensed power? Radio-Locator shows 50k day and 78 night. RecNet shows 50k day and 78 night, with an app to go to 45K during critical hours (http://www.recnet.com/cdbs/fmq.php?call=wgun). This matches the FCC AM Query. Why would they be filing an app to power DOWN during CH?

Is WGUN currently only 10k during CH? Why aren't they at 50k during CH, if they are licensed for it?

Also, was WGUN the station that we were discussing previously that had PSRA and PSSA for higher power? I know a lot of these older daytimers had that.

I have been listening off and on all day---Sounds great. I called Al and he said when the brokered contracts are up. They are going full time with this format and he said they are going to do a Doo Wop show every afternoon starting at 5.. Plus you can hear this on the wunderadio app on the iphone. Hook it up to a docking station like a Bose and you have Stereo.

I just checked out the on-line stream. They are sounding good. Their web page has not been updated yet.

Not all brokered shows are going away. Some pay good $$$ and will stay. The standards will be heard between shows when they are not airing. Lot's of music on the weekends with the Good Ol Days on Sunday 2pm-6pm followed by Sounds of Sinatra a terrific Sinatra show.BBJ show on Saturday.

The website is being built now.

Here is a sample. Remember it's not complete yet.

This is great. This station is finally moving away from it inepness. It has huge potential. It has been around since 1948, why dont they have a better signal or taller tower for a 50K??? I know the ground conductivity issue, but you would think that they would at least be on par with a 750 signal. Atlanta just got FU%%%d by the fcc when they were doling out signals back in the day. Who are we protecting at night that this station cannot be more powerful? I mean 78 watts. What is that, that won't even make your hair curl. ;D  :( 8) ???

The power at night is what it is but they do have a application with the fcc to do 45,000 watts at sunrise then going to 50,000 two hrs. later. WGUN will sound better as time goes on and the standards is something Atlanta needed since 1160 am was ruined with it's horrible programing after Joe bought it.

Amen, brother. ;D

I agree as well. Surely MOYL will pay their bills more than brokered programming will in this market (I would guess).

There was another thread that talked about WGUN applying for 45,000 watts critical hours. Currently, WGUN is authorized for 50,000 watts sunrise to sunset. Going 45,000 watts critical hours is a power downgrade. Nobody seems to know why.

NO!NO! WGUN is not licensed for 50,000 watts sign on. They have critical hours of 10,000 to protect a Canadian clear. Rules have changed to allow WGUN to have critical of 45,000 watts then up to the full 50,000 watts. I know I've seen the license. Check the fcc database and see the application for the change.

Not saying you're wrong, but this is what the FCC shows on their website:
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/amq?state=&call=wgun

Reading this straight up would suggest 50k daytime, sunup to sundown, with no CH powerdown. Although, how could they apply for 45k CH if they had it already? Maybe the FCC has a glitch in their database.

If you read the actual app you get a different story (yours). Weird.

Is the WGUN tower cut to fit its frequency?

I found this on the application for the new critical hours power:

...A TOWER OF 0.358 WAVELENGTH WITH 50 KILOWATTS REQUIRES A FENCE FOUR METERS FROM THE TOWER. THE APPLICANT WILL PROVIDE A FENCE WITH A MINIMUM DISTANCE OF FOUR METERS.

Some of the engineer types can chime in to correct me if I am off base. From what I have gathered from engineers in the past, this is an okay tower wavelenghth but not ideal.
