WGUN 1010 AM Makes Changes

Yes, the tower is Ok. If they were to increase its <efficiency> by increasing its height, they would probably have to reduce the power somewhat to maintainthe present contours and protection ratios.

Saw their billboard in Stone Mountain today. Red and black, looks like something that could belong to KLS. And right there it says 50,000 watts... what point is served by emblazoning "50,000 watts" on a billboard?

I wrote to the FCC about the database showing 50,000 watts sunrise to sunset. I reference the application to raise CH to 45,000 watts. I got two responses:

Per License BL-13588/13679, issued 6/14/1974, Station WGUN is restricted to 10 kW during critical hours. I have modified the CDBS record to reflect critical hours operation with 10 kW.

and

The change should show in the AM Query on the FCC's Internet site tomorrow morning.

I am impressed with the speed in which they responded.

You have a point...if you have to brag about it...

Although, and I'm not going to plow through Radio-Locator right now to verify this, the only other 50kW (daytime) stations of note in ATL are WCNN, WSB, WCFO, and WGST. There's also that CP for that religious station out of Douglasville, and I am sure I forgot someone. WQXI, WGKA, and a lot of other bigger AMs with ratings aren't 50k daytime.

It also distinguishes them from the various 1000W religious and ethnic daytimers that people pass by on the dial.

Maybe your next assignment could be for the FCC to explain why WCNN is licensed to a city that hasn't existed since the 1960s.

Hilarious,,,and so true, why do they still identify this non existent city, they should say Buckhead at least.

I preset 1010 last week. Great to hear Standards again and the signal is stronger where I live than some of the others to try standards. I don't like the gunshots between every other song. Not on standards. I listen to standards to relax. Loud bangs don't go with it.

I know the gunshots are terrible. Plus this station has a long way to go, IMHO. They still have a tremendous amount of religious garbage..

Nothing new in this world... the Brennans made an immodest fortune with a cannon blast and "This Am the Big BAM" on WBAM in Montgomery.

I remember the Brennan stations: a "folksy" top 40 in a Drake-Chenault world. They made it work in B'ham, Montgomery and Jax with the power signals, but would never work in ATL.

WGUN was country when it hit the air - appropriate calls and FX for the format then, but NOT for MOYL and religious now. I believe it will find a nice niche, especially when the religious contracts expire - but get rid of the BANG cra stuff. Doesn't fit.
