WGUN..whaaat?

The place just aint the same without the cannon shots---although the Love American Style theme would be a nice return toward the traditional WGUN sound

Mr Taylor...we need to meet up at One Star BBQ in Buckhead for a plate of ribs and to gab. You are observant and seeing the big picture here. As this thread started as a WGUN thread, remember that every market large and small has a WGUN or three, and many even have underperforming FMs, but true enough most under 21 year olds don't even realize that radio is there at all. Never mind active or passive listening..radio is NOT cool, and furthermore people who WORK in radio are dweebs and dinosaurs. Try assembling more than 4 college kids for an elective course on broadcasting, and you will hear crickets..between the mumbling of the few who signed up for it because it sounded like a gut course..and one who wants to be Howard Stern, and one who wants to be Al Michaels and go to football games for free. There is no interest in the medium. None. This is the reason the broadcast companies can not find good talent IF they wanted to, and they don't. It poses a loss of control if a "personality" flexes his or her creative abilities. The absolute ONLY chance a terrestrial audio entertainment source has is to become DIFFERENT, compelling, edgy..and COOL to listen to. Build a perception that radio (and especially AM) has a world of unusual and damn near forbidden programming to persuade new listeners to adapt radio as a guilty pleasure..almost a return to listening on an earphone under the covers at night. An underground community of niche listeners can become very profitable. More Art Bell types..more Joe Pyne, and more bizarre whackos that stand on the edge of being less than savory...slightly smarmy and nearly illegal.

Yes it is going to take a move THAT aggressive. And balls. Big ones. A new Randy Michaels incarnation could pull it off. When that person surfaces..if ever..there will be a massive cume infusion and radio..might be okay.

Many of the world's pressing problems could be solved with BBQ. Maybe it's time for another Radio-info brain trust gathering at some BBQ joint. Just make sure there's something Kosher for our observant friends........

Brokered programing is coming back but without the gun blast. ;D

Well, now you've given me an idea. AM listeners tend to be older, right? WGUN could run an old Westerns format...airing any kind of old radio or TV show that featured guns. "The Rifleman" comes to mind. Then the call letters and the gun blast would fit right in. If WGUN could afford a van, it could make appearances at gun shows and rodeos.

And just for some variety, maybe Shotgun Tom Kelly of K-Earth FM in L.A. could voice track evenings.

I was listening this afternoon. While there is a jock in the afternoon, it must be voice tracked. There was no mention of the weather and storms that were in Atlanta.

WHAT a Bloody DAMN mess. Its scary at best ! A KILLER Daytime signal, Taylor and anyone else who says Brokered is the way to go.. G U N, only will and can survive, if they go back to the tried and true.. Sell every unsold minute in the day, THEN and only then will WGUN survive.. I dont want to see the BIG GUN just fade away forever, but unless someone gets a clue.. ITS gonna happen..

Well, someone put money into the physical plant. So, how much is the monthly power bill for the transmitter site? $5000.00 per month?

That's probably in the ballpark (power bill) for winter months - maybe a bit more for summertime with the longer daylight hours.
The transmitter was installed in the early 90s so it is close to 20 years old - almost old enough to smoke.
When first built in the early 70s, the WGUN transmitter plant was typical of a market the size of Atlanta. It was air conditioned, had an engineering office, bathroom, and enclosed diesel generator which would carry the entire plant.
Since the day it was commissioned I'll guess not a penny has been spent to maintain the facility. It's a textbook example of poor management of resources and capital.

Taylors Comment gets a GOLD STAR for the day ! Its amazing what a nice building its in,looking at the factors involved. Again, Truth was stated, its just a BLOODY Damn mess ! Great signal, but the rest.. Yeah.. Ok then !

Maybe the Chinese will buy it and begin instruction of the American public. Mandarin lessons on the 10s........
What organization, besides the Spanish language groups, would buy the ol' warhorse? Jimmy Swaggert is still buying radio stations.....at least I think he is. I don't think K-Love would buy an AM.
I wonder why Donald Trump has never made the plunge into electronic media. He certainly has the ego for radio ownership.

There was new, really bad programming this morning at about 8:45. There was USA radio news at the top of the hour and then an even worse talk show that came on. The afternoon DJ was still on this afternoon. The afternoon guy was reading traffic reports between songs.

That's exactly what I expected the Rivers to do with WGUN. Start loading up the schedule with radio riffraff.....sure, these people pay money but this approach will never build any audience for the station and will lead to continued failure.
Going back to another suggestion earlier.....why not just allow people to use PayPal to buy 15 minute blocks of airtime. Advertise in right/left wing magazines/websites for lunatic participation. You would probably get a waiting list of "barbershop preachers" who would want to "throw out the lifeline to the unwashed." Just full tilt, unabashed lunacy....I think Roddy dubbed it "Crazy 1010." The more I think about the concept the more I like it.......
1010 "The Donald" could certainly create some buzz. Cool thing is Trump could afford real FM signals......

That's about the most brilliantest ideeuh I've heard in a while. A full belly from a bate of 'cue calms the mind and soothes the soul. Y'all call me when you gather. If I can scratch the $105.00 together to fill the Expedition's tank, I'll come for a bite to eat.

Except the last time we did that, the folks who didn't show up were the engineers...Taylor and Littlejohn. Of course, that was at Manuel's and not a BBQ joint.
