WGVC Greenville to flip this week

News out of Greenville is that WGVC is set to flip formats.. again. Formerly Oldies, 106.3 was bought by Entercom from Barnstable and the ill-fated "Walk" format was moved to the stick. The hybrid Country/Christian format never really gained traction and, with a new GM in place, Entercom is set to write-off the investment and try again. This time, it's strongly rumored to be going "chick talk" as it is sometimes derisively called. Conservative female hosts need not apply. Laura Ingraham will not be a part of the new station. Listen for Greenstone Media programming, the new lefty female talk network.

A direct feed from Charlotte's 107.9 would make a lot more sense than syndicated leftist fare.

Just blow it up & make it oldies or Jack, Bob, etc.

Ha! It WAS oldies before they bought it from Barnstable!

Honey, I know that. Point being, they'd have better success bringing oldies back than lefty chick talk. Remember, this is Greenville.

In my humble opinion, we should perhaps have been having this conversation six months after The Walk was put on the air to begin with, back on the 103s.

From a business perspective, I feel like a change is necessary. However, "chick talk"?? Has that worked anywhere it has ever been done? Looks like ANOTHER goof-up.

Agreed. Maybe WORD can be moved to 106.3 & they can ditch that hideous AM simulcast setup. The current frequencies would be better, IMO, for sports talk. Or, drop Planet to 106.3 & move a "Bob" format to 93.3.

On that note, any word if 93.3 is up & running on their new stick yet?

I would have put WORD on 106.3 and flipped the dual AM's to sports.

Well, to begin, WGVC SHOULD have stayed Oldies after Entercom purchased it....From what I see, the ratings are no better than when Oldies was there. The Walk barely made it when it was on the 103s and it was probably hoped that the move to 106.3 with a stronger, more uniform signal would help, but it obviously hasn't. The Country listeners are going to listen to 92.5 WESC and 100.5 WSSL! And the Contemporary Christian listeners to WLFJ. I'm sure The Walk has its fans but from a business standpoint, it's a disaster.

"Chick talk?" If that is going to be the new format, it'll be pretty much doomed the second time around...an FM simulcast of WORD or maybe Classic Hits would be in much better taste.

I think a women's talk station could still be a good idea. I just don't think Greenstone has the formula for success. First Entercom tried to invent a format, now they're trying to be cutting edge with this new talk approach. I admire that but I think the stockholders might prefer a more traditional approach that makes money instead.

I don't really see a Female Talk format working in this market, especially a network that leans left.

I'd also agree with putting WORD on 106.3, except that the News/Talk format is so firmly established on 1330/950. And you couldn't use the WORD call letters on FM.

How about signal? 106.3 has a hard time reaching Anderson and parts of northern Greenville and Spartanburg counties.

106.3 would do better to go all Contemporary Christian, I think. I'd also like to see Classic Hits, though that might be too close to the Rock 101 format.

And yeah, even Adult Hits (Entercom seems to like the names Mike, Charlie, or Simon) would be better than female liberal talk.

The 106.3 signal isn't the best but it's better than the the two AM's put together.

I hear it's going to be called 106.3 The Voice... would fit in well with the call letters, too.

Chick, you read my mind...WORD on the FM, and sports on the AMs...now THAT, to me, seems like a winning combination.

Yoo-hoo sunshine, give credit where credit is due. I posted that idea first... :-*

Chick talk can be had already on 107.9. Leftist chick talk, presuming it's going to be political, will be a big loser, especially in this very Conservative area. It's been shown time & time again that women, as a group, want music, not talk.

So the first and best idea that occurs to all three of us is to put sports on 1330 and 950 AM, and WORD on 106.3 FM. Surely, the same thought came to them. Are they trying too hard to avoid the obvious and do something different? That's what they did with The Walk.

Women's talk radio need not be political, but Greenstone Media's lineup, while not overtly political, is said to "lean left". Jane Fonda and Gloria Steinem are involved with Greenstone so you might expect that. We'll find out soon enough but I have a feeling this is not going to be pretty. :'(

Exactly....107.9 WLNK's numbers aren't too good, even in a large metropolitan area like Charlotte...Urban gospel would be much better! Hard to believe Greenville doesn't have any type of Urban Gospel station.

Tune in to 106.3 right now and hear a dead man counting down. He is saying several quotes per minute, some of them are funny, some are suggestive. I did not here any announcements on The Walk saying this was going to happen. I'm guessing this is kind of spooky to the average listener - my first reaction is that it was a jammer.

At exactly what time was "The Walk" dumped, and was anything at all said? Mark Ferguson would've likely said something on his show--if he was allowed, or if he even knew.
