WHAT changes format

The ratio really favors the first, but every once in a while there is one or two reggae or hip-hop songs. I've heard Jurassic 5, Lupe Fiasco and Dialated Peoples, along with a few reggae artists.

DARN PhillyW... I'm TOO "long in the tooth" to recognize any of those artists you mentioned. Seems my "radar" on currents blew up in about 2000 :D ...But I agree... "Hip-hop" was there--along with a few reggae selections--but definately more 90s pop/rock alt--and that's somewhat of a surprise to me. I enjoy it--but I suspect that I'm not supposed to ???

HA well as long as youre enjoying it. From my perspective, theyre pretty talented artists. MUCH better than the god-awful nobodys (all the Yungs and Lil's) making the rounds on rap stations today (but i think that's clear to everyone). A good fit for the WHAT blend.

But I hope they manage to pull ahead of 'PEN... God I hated what G.M. did to the standards on that station...
Blowing up the only standards station on the dial for a station expected to take on a giant thats been around for YEARS was completely moronic.

hopefully it will be on FM soon

Hopefully you are wrong. So far as rock goes, this is the best thing we've had in years. YOU DON'T WANT THIS ON FM. If it premieres on FM, it'll be watered down and commercialized within five minutes. Besides, we've seen that the big companies who own FM stations believe that there is more money to be made on the yutes by selling and force-feeding them rap/ hip hop than by selling them rock music. THE FM STATIONS DON'T WANT THIS AUDIENCE.

Besides, it's much easier and faster to demoralize an entire society by playing rap music than it is to play rock. That is part of the plan, you know.

If you build it, they will come. (Sort Of) WHAT is probably the weakest stick in this immediate area, and it looks like just about everyone on this board is listening anyway. The reaction to this is more that just "curious cume." We won't be tuning out in a day or two because...where are we gonna go for this music? MGK? MMR? Nope.

WHAT needs to fine tune some things, and I suspect if they improve their signal, more people will listen regularly.

I'll deal with the less than perfect audio for a great playlist. Aside from Sirius, most of my music now comes from 1260 WBUD and 1340 WHAT. Less commercials and more variety that way.

Kudos to Tom Kelly for having the guts to think outside the box, especially on AM! But if he fires up IBOC on 1340, he'll probably cause interference to WEMG-1310 and WNJC-1360.Ownerships of those places won't be happy....

Case in point on this: I tuned in WNYH-740 while heading back to New England for Christmas. That Long Island station, with 20 kW daytime, was getting clobbered by IBOC from WOR-710 and WABC-770.The digital hiss made the 740 audio sound like garbage.

All I can say is... its kinda refreshing, I can tune in anytime, home or car from my location, but I dont like the urban stuff thrown in. Why can't anyone leave that stuff alone, do we need a form of it on every station in the universe. It would of been better if Racist 900 did the flip instead of 1340, better signal and at least Cody would be off the dial once again, now WURD might get some numbers. I think music matters first, then the band, if the music is good on AM the audiance would be there. A few more formats missing on the Philly dial that would bring listeners back to AM.....Country Classics, Standards, Classic Oldies ala WMID, Metal, there is no mention of any urban format due to the fact the dial is already saturated with this nonsense. I have heard WHAT on a few radios already and its on my presets pre-empting XM at times and it could do better without the urban logic. I think a call letter change would do good also, wipe away Mason and her one-sided spouting legacy.

Musically, it's interesting, sure - but it just sounds like crap ... and I'm not just referring to the lack of signal strength that makes it sound like a static-fest; the processing isn't cutting it. "Runaround" by Blues Traveler sounded like someone was playing harmonica by himself into a microphone.

Seriously though - Aside from listening to catch traffic & transit on the 2's, maybe some sports-talk, and/or right-wing talk shows (though aren't all these kids liberal hippies?) ... does anyone know people under 25 (in the 18-24 demo) who tune in to AM radio on a regular basis?

Why target an audience who's so disillusioned with radio, that they would rather listen to their iPods, CD's, or a streaming station on the web? And yes, while it's true that Skin does stream on the web, there aren't many stations that don't do so these days - and there's a lot of web-based stations (yrockonxpn.org for example) that just sound better - on so many levels.

But, for in-car listening, the AM station sounds awful. Even if they offered an HD signal, I doubt highly that I'd go out and plunk down money on a new stereo system for my car that did HD just so I could hear it better ... since I've already plunked down money for XM, which I thoroughly enjoy the programming on. And of course, there are these things called CD's as well.

As someone else said, too little, too late. good concept ... but they should have just started a streaming station, and spent the remaining $4,998,000 on marketing. Once the city goes wi-fi ... there is the potential for a whole new ballgame.

Their MySpace page, by the way, says they're looking for a sales manager. Can you imagine trying to sell that station?

I happen to think the hip hop on WHAT is positive and a part of the diverse mix of music the target audience listens to. And I'm confused as to why most of your posts, RunWith, in some way denegrate or show displeasure with urban music. We get it already.

Big Brother hears that Skin Management hired a tatoo artist to come up with the new logo for skin radio......

Wow i just heard Against Me - I'm Losing Touch wow never heard that on the radio.

The audio definately needs a punch behind it. Granted, they can't do everything at once, but they need to jack-up the processing. Aggressive music needs aggressive processing, but don't kill it.

OK...

So far I've heard this station being played in two stores. The first was in Center City on Monday and then again today in Abington at a convenience store. Any thoughts on whether this station will actually get some significant ratings?

I have my doubts but so far it looks like some regular folk are actually tuning in.

The webcast is still terrible and 1340 itself is unlistenable in many areas.

I’ve been bouncing some Email regarding this with a twenty-something non-radio Fraternity Brother who lives in Bristol near the PA Turnpike (North Philly). He is aware of WHAT (because of all the Press “drama”). When I asked him for his observations, he said “I have none—‘can barely hear it during the day—NADA AT NITE... alternative rock on low-power AM—RIGHT!” he exclaimed. If they can’t punch out to the ‘burbs—I see all this as simple bluster. Could WHAT be more popular as a topic here than with the masses required to award it with even a miniscule level of edification?

I have listened to their lackluster presentation on the net—the 250-watt Oldies station on 1580AM in my hometown of 17k has a MUCH better stream. I appreciate their effort and format (refreashing but...). Heck, I enjoy an “underdog”, but come-on cads—does THIS have a flickering wish given the hard-fast facts? Maybe they should re-license to Narberth and become the on-air outlet for oldies.com :D

WHAT had carried black programming prior to the launch of Skin Radio.

I have been listening to the stream for a couple of days(the station does not come in where I live in North Coventry but comes in fine in Oaks where I work.........the station gets interference from another station around the Spring City area and fades away)
I really really like it.........Miss Murder from AFI is playing right now.......hard to hear that on the FM dial. Too bad that 106.9 signal is not for sale. It would be great if the owners of 1340 were able to get that signal and put the format on there.
