What do you see for Mobile Radio for '08?

I don't normally post on this board (I always read it just for S & G's), but I have to back up what Jay said about us and our time off the air and correct Edward a little. We didn't resign during a book. It was 4 weeks prior to the start of one, and partly by design. I could say more, but after nearly a year, anything I posted here would probably sound petty and bitter, and Jay and I are really over all that by now. Yes we do miss it, the passion is definitely still there for us and radio, but until the right play develops, we'll happily just sit on the bench and watch the game go on. I will tell you this though. The day our number is called. We will be back with a vengence, and there won't be any "walking away" until we've made our presence very well known. And that's all I have to say 'bout that.

My predictions:

99.9 will apply for a CP to operate at 100,000 watts (they are at 77,000 now)
94.1 will relocate to Santa Rosa County or Oak. County covering FWB/Destin (why does Mobile need two Deliaha affiliates anyway?)
107.3 will buy out 104.7 out of Crestview and simulcast (WAAZ) and hell will freeze
98.3 will apply for a 100KW license since our area doesn't have a jazz station unless you can pick up 106.3

Am I being too far out?

-Rob

Yo rob, yeah, I think your just going a little tooo far. Are you on crack or someting:

Let's be realistic:

I think that Q100 will flip to an URBAN/AC format (like the Beat or something) and compete with BLX.

WABB will get a whole new airstaff in the summer. They are lacking talent.

MY 107.3 is just plain.....bland.

ABB won't get a new airstaff - they don't care about talent so much as they care about people who won't disagree with management on anything

I actually would not be surprised to see them try to get the bottom line up on that station so they can sell it

For the Alabama board, yes. ;) ;D

When did WDLT 98.3 flip to Jazz? I thought they were doing quite well in Mobile with adult Urban, battling it out with WBLX for the #1 station spot. (How do these damn smiley faces work?)

Who bills the most in Mobile?

Hey Rob. I think several people have tried to explain this to you before...radio stations can't just "pack up and move" to wherever they want.

There's a 94.1 in Marianna (for those that don't know, it's just south of Dothan). There's also a MAJOR Air Force base in Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties (The largest in the USA?).
WMEZ and WMXC have different owners, WMEZ's coverage of Mobile is far more valuable than coverage of Fort Walton would be. 94.1 can not, and will not, move east. It might be sold one day. It might flip formats. But it will never move and I'm sure they've maxed out their power/coverage.
Fort Walton has Coast 93.3, they don't need coverage from Soft Rock 94.1, WMEZ. If you love WMEZ, buy a rooftop antenna, that's the only way you'll ever get it.

1. They haven't, they only do Jazz on Sunday morning IIRC. And WDLT wouldn't truly 'battle' with WBLX, since...never mind, that's not what you meant.

2. Just click on the smileys--the codes should show in the text, and they'll show when you post them

3. My guesses would be WKSJ or Lite Mix.

Hey, WDLT did NOT flip to smooth jazz. They have a 5 hour smooth jazz special on sunday mornings.

But, I would love to see some format flips in the mobile-area. Like flip 96.1 the rocket cause they play the same songs over over over over over over over over over over over over over over, and yeah, over agian.

I'm aware of that, just trying to imagine what would happen IF they could.
Well one can dream. Radio here totally sucks (it's all the same) if we get more urban stations, then may I ask why? We have 92.1 WFFY (though, i don't think you can hear that up there) and 92.9 can be heard loud and clear in FWB.

If the Pensacola/Mobile/FWB area expanded their horizons, I can only imagine what this will do to XM sales. Coast 93.3 is #1 with woman, and I think 100.7 is, too.

Though, I didn't look at the latest arbitron (sp?) ratings, I think radio here is doing quite well. Last I checked BLX was #4 or #3 in mobile, #5 in FWB.

If we dropped 1 country station, added an oldies station (though "MY" does that rather well) and a full powered FM news talker, (am is too saturated at night to hear anything unless your right in Mobile or Pensacola or apartment city, FWB)

I think that can spice things up along the Pensacola/Mobile/FWB market.

WHOOOO...hold the phone...add another urban station to the mobile/pensacola market? Nope, ain't gonna happen. the reason is simple....ratings DO NOT always equal sales.

In mobile, the "urban" market, I.E. the listeners, do not have the bucks to spend to make it worthwhile for advertisers. I could give a toot if BLX has the number one numbers, if those number one numbers are also unemployeed and have NO SPENDABLE FREE INCOME.

Sure, lets get racial here...no problem (I deal with reality, not political correctness) WABB does well in sales because they get the white "urban" listeners who come from the wealthy west mobile areas, and who have SPENDABLE income. The majority of the urban share that BLX has come from REAL urban (Yes..poor black) areas where there is massive unemployement and no money to spend on what the advertisers sell.

THAT is why the city cannot support another urban station.

As for smooth jazz, I think it would do better here as a fulltime format (taking in the listeners that beautiful music used to get including big 25-54 female numbers), with an upscale audience.

I have got to say, the music Katt Sertan has been playing on (PBS) WHIL may actual show the little public station cracking the ratings at night for the first time. should be interesting to watch what happens.

I am also sad to say I have been hearing more and more non-charted songs on the pirate (no doubt the influence of the old AAA programers now running the show), and if they do not watch it, that will kill there run at taking out the rocket...who continues to drone along with the same 50 songs, and jocks who endlessly fill space with content nobody gives a damm about.

Someone on here has to know the answer to this.
Does WABB bring in more revenue than Cumulus' monster ratings combo of WBLX and WDLT? If the FM stations were rated by revenue, how low on the list would WBLX be? Obviously it would be below all the Clear Channel stations. I'm guessing it bills less than WZEW?

Putting things much more intelligently, and without irresponsible racial stereotyping: There are stations targeting suburban adults (women) that are more attractive to advertisers. Those stations don't necessarily have the most overall listeners, but attract the highest concentration of audience type that advertisers are trying to reach.

Now for the corrections: Ruger is incorrect to assume that there isn't room for other urban stations. WBLX & WDLT post double digit shares amongst their mostly African-American audiences (who are 'unpoor' and 'un-unemployed' enough to still warrant national and local ad buys) mostly because they haven't had any direct competition in almost ten years. It's mostly because of the reasons stated above, but there's also the fact that both have big signals with long-term listener recognition. And that Cumulus can package 92.9 and 98.3 together for advertisers.

A competing station (or broadcaster) would essentially be challenging TWO high rated stations, an obvious disadvantage. And Mobile ain't Atlanta--it isn't even Birmingham. The market isn't big enough to warrant anyone trying to mount an equitable challenge. Any challenger would almost have to come from a smaller broadcaster using a smaller signal. And with metered markets east and west of Mobile, there just aren't enough smaller signals to make it worthwhile.

I think many people really don't know how much of a "non-ethnic" audience BLX reaches. Granted those numbers aren't coming from the mansions on Old Shell or Springhill, but trust me they're there. They gather a fair number in the younger demos because that demo pretty much from Ft. Walton to New Orleans leans towards the rhythmic side. I'm not saying they're all gangsta wanna-be's, just are down with the music.

As far as the billing? I would be shocked and really don't believe that WZEW bills more than BLX.

What I've noticed and don't like in my own opinion is the slection of music that BLX plays. I think there website does not show that they are a "Hip Hop/R&B" station. They look like another WDLT-type format and kind of competing with them which to me, is plain....stupid.

As far as what I see in 2008...I believe WABB will rebound some, but not to its former self. That is because I believe Cumulus will again turn one of their stations to CHR. My bet this time based on past experience is WJLQ in Pensacola.

Could 100.7 go "Movin'" ?
