It was on the air on WHAT 1340 from Jan 19 2007 to August 30 2007, called Skin Radio. After that it continued online as internet station.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

It was good. I was a fan of the station (over the air) while it lasted. My friend and co-conspirator Randy Dascher and I tried something similar at WCHE in 2006. He was a modern rock guy, I was an alt rock guy together we tried to make a station that played show tunes and oldies (not the good kind) into something more listenable...
No easy task. So, my hat is off to Al for what he tried to do, and did, at WHAT.

Was is good? ... well I'd probably have a biased opinion being that I was the PD/OM, but I'd say so. Too bad you missed it over the air, though 1340's signal isn't the easiest to get. Skin Radio did still continue to broadcast internet only after the main signal format switch to adult standards.

Thanks wcradio, I'd tune into WCHE if I was ever going by West Chester.

Al, sad to say, WCHE is no longer playing that music either.

I now concentrate on mostly local artists, but it's only for 1 hour a week. If you're interested, my little show is on WPAZ and WCHE. It's called Up Close And Acoustic. More of an in depth performance/interview show.

I really did like Skin Radio over the air at WHAT. I'm always saying I'm a dinosaur, but I like 'radio' and to me that's over the air. And while WHAT's signal wasn't great away from the city, I'd suffer through the static as I was driving.

Soon I'm sure, 'over the air' won't mean much, but it still means a lot to me.
So, again, good work on Skin. I do miss hearing it in the car.

Don't forget, Radio Racket was the first program to air an advertisement for Skin Radio. ;)

WPAZ is probably what small, community oriented radio stations should be like! I for one like their innovative and eclectic music offerings!

Methinks that this might be a formula that other small and/or marginal AM stations might want to try. Whether or not this is something that WNWR might want to try is another matter; but it or something similar should strongly be considered! It's a shame that about the only choices on AM in major metropolises these days are virtually limited to news, talk, sports, religion and ethnic programming!

The coolest AM music station would be modern rock (soft and hard rock) playing all modern rock from Taylor Swift to CKY

Klutch, WPAZ is a fun listen. I think you're right, more marginal AMs should get away from all talk/ultra right or left garbage.
What's wrong with entertainment along with local community updates and news?

I think WPAZ strikes the right balance. It's a rare station that takes requests, keeps you updated on what's going on locally, and have people on the air who really care about the 'product' and not just show up once a week to talk into an open mic and leave.

Another cool thing about PAZ which has been mentioned above, they have an eclectic play list (which is always growing and contains a lot of local musicians) It's refreshing to hear an AM that's not afraid to try something other than moldy oldies.

I hope they make it and this experiment is supported by it's community. The last thing we need is another station broadcasting religious content, or just as bad, going dark (again). They are off to a good start.

Charlie -

I do know about your Acoustic show. You have a lot of nice guests stop by, local and other wise. It's nice to see the support for them on the radio.

How was the sound of the alt rock on AM? That would be the only thing that I think you'd lose is the power that stereo gives the songs.

On a side note. I listened to WPAZ. I'm sorry there is nothing special about the station. It sounds like a really bad college radio station. The dj's are awful.

Well obviously compared to FM, any music on AM is going to lose the stereo channel and frequency range. However, on analog AM the Alt rock material I was playing on WHAT sounded pretty good, it still had enough life. It is an acquired ear I'd have to say though, but you get used to it quickly. The majority of people listen to music on tiny earbuds and crappy laptop speakers in everyday life anyway, not huge audiophile systems. We found that if people want to hear certain music/programming they'll listen, no matter what it sounds like or where it's coming from.

We also broadcast it AM HD, which sounded a whole lot better than the analog signal, pretty much FM quality (save for some occasional digital swish). but that signal range was even smaller than the analog's and how many people have a receiver.

When we switched formats to the adult standards we turned the IBOC off, so no more HD. However, if AM is good enough for big band music to punch through and frank sinatra's voice to carry some power, then it can do the same for Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Modest Mouse.

Actually, there are a couple of college radio stations I like. Probably because they are not 'programmed' and the playlists are all over the map. I think that's what I like about WPAZ. They'll play anything. Take requests. Give local news and announcements.

DJs are hit and miss on any station. On a small time station where it's all volunteer, you're bound to hear something you don't like.
Check out cool college radio at WBZC 88.9 and WPRB 103.3. I've found myself tuning in to those two stations fairly regularly lately.

And thanks for the kind words Al. Means a lot.

As a "DJ" by way of the weekly "Cellar Show" every Saturday night, I take offense to this statement. ::) But, to each their own, and thanks for listening to the NEW 'PAZ!

And if you happen to be a resident of Pottstown, you would agree that there is something special about the legacy of WPAZ Radio.

WPAZ should consider itself similar to an LPFM, though without the advantage of being an FM - it's mission is reportedly to superserve its local audience. Wouldn't the best way to do this be to program a format that doesn't deter the intended audience?
