WHAT doing Alternative rock

Musichead, you have a point. And I've noticed for the last few months that WPAZ is featuring more and more home-grown music and locally produced music shows. It seems to be evolving in that direction. Slowly, but it is happening. Wednesdays and Saturdays in particular.
To be fair to your point, it's not happening all at once, but there does seem to be a move in that direction.
Whether it will eventually cover the entire schedule or not I don't know (that's always my hope... No actual musical genre formatted except local), but I do know that WPAZ plays a lot more local artists than any other station I know of. On a consistent basis. There's so much talent that's local, and frankly I'm tired of 'classic rock' and even worse, 'oldies'.

To Quad,

While I'm happy to hear IBOC was turned off, I am curious why C-QuAM wasn't chosen instead. A.M. Stereo sounds good to great, depending on the station. Still, a tip of the hat for trying rock on A.M.!

There is an AM station in Portland Oregon (KKSN 910) which simulcasts KNRK-HD2 and broadcasts a local music format. http://www.947.fm/

Whether or not WPAZ should go in that or a similar direction is another matter. I feel they're going in the right direction with their current offerings. There are too many musicians, local and otherwise, who are overlooked by mainstream radio. Forgive me if I'm repeating myself, but if you're an AM broadcaster, you must give people a reason to flip that bandswitch over; especially those under 45!

Weren't the systems offered by Harris and Magnaox compatible with the stereo decoder offered by Motorola? Maybe those systems could be given a fair shake once again. Just a thought. I agree that AM stereo should be given another chance and that radios shouldn't cost an arm and a leg to buy and should have more features which are user-friendly!

Let me rephrase my last comment if I may. What I was trying to say was wasn't the decoder on some radios compatible with Magnavox, Motorola and Harris?

There were some radios which could detect & separate stereo with the Harris, Magnavox & Motorola systems, yes. I have one such receiver. It will also detect & separate Kahn/Hazeltine but a switch has to be thrown to switch between the 2 styles. I think in the former 3 the pilot tones were similar & the decoding methods were close enough as well.

I do too. It's a Sony SRF-A100 but has been quite abused over the years.

Because of this IMNSHO those systems should've never gotten the shaft!

Hey Klutch, thanks for the info. But really, I just meant that there are no stations locally (Philly/Delaware Valley) doing local bands and musicians any favors. WPAZ is small but they are, by far, playing more local music than any station that is covered on this forum (Philadelphia).
I don't have all the answers about what would get people to tune to a small AM. I think serving the local community, which includes local music/the arts, when other bigger outlets don't may be one way.
The irony of course, is that WPAZ has one of the better sounding internet streams I've heard... but, that does not get people to tune to the air broadcast.
Thanks for all the good talk about some fine AM experiments. I miss Skin Radio on WHAT, and I hope WPAZ can stay on the air.

Well, C-Quam / AM stereo was not considered heavily because the technology was already passe and was not being supported by manufacturers etc. IBOC / HD Radio was installed because that was the 'future', especially how it can level the field for an AM station that plays music. It was being rolled out by manufacturers in all sorts of devices. We turned it off when we changed formats because the demo for Martini Lounge would not care as much for the sound quality offered by HD and the improvement to the analog signal by having it off outweighed having it on for that format.

Lots of stations like to say they support local music. They say it all the time on air (it sounds great ), but there is a distinct difference in talking about it and actually doing it right, in a way that actually helps the artist. And not just with a little show late on Sunday's, or a token play once a week. A station that truly supports the local music and artists weaves them into the fabric of the station and programming all the time, with the right balance of pointing out that it is a local artist but also that they deserve the airplay just as every other national or recognized track that is played. The big guys are usually afraid to do this kind of stuff and stick to their national safelists all day long, and then of course maybe do their token shouts to local music like I said and play 1 song a week on like a tuesday night to say "see we're cool'. It's always left up to the fringe AM's to try to serve the community correctly. I tried to do my part with a spot on the clock for a local band every hour on Skin Radio, as well as concert listings and profiles on the website. We even had some local acts for the adult standards (it's hard to say no to Pixanne). I hope there can always be an outlet on the air for local acts.
