What Exactly is Star doing?

SFStatic said:
Can you name a major music station in North America that doesn't use Selector, and hasn't for the last 20 years?

WXRT. They use MusicMaster.

I'm trying to figure out what Star 101.3 is trying to accomplish:

Prince- Purple Rain
Usher- Yeah
Rascal Flatts- What Hurts the Most
UB40- Here I Am
Leona Lewis- Bleedin Love
Joan Osbourne- What if God Was One

Any takers?

They're letting a stupid computer program pick the music.

Bring back James Gabbert, call it K-101, and let's call it a day.

The PD is very good, and had been programming it down to the last second, but keep in mind he's also programming LA now, and was relocating there. He's probably just spread too thin now, and can't stay on top of everything. With the 2500 bodies CC has cut this year, this kind of thing will only get worse at their stations.

Since a computer is picking the music, they should rebrand the station as HAL 1013!

Quoting HAL: "I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my
complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I've still got the greatest
enthusiasm and confidence in the mission. And I want to help you."

Its not programmed by computer. the APD /MD of KYLD also schedules KIOI, with oversight from the PD in LA. Maybe he is stretched a bit thin, doing both stations.

Having heard club DJs and radio DJs and having played with various MP3 players and iTunes and a program I developed myself that plays musical selections based on genre, year, artist, and other things that can be programmed, I've found that random play is just as listenable to me as something programmed by a human. I'd like to believe otherwise, but that's what I take from it. I'm not a casual listener; I'm an intensive music listener. Most music listeners are casual listeners, thus I believe that an iPod set on random play and overlap can probably do just as well within a particular format as something programmed by humans.

I know that people will disagree and they'll be able to show ratings points differences between various programmers. I'm still inclined to think that such differences probably fall within the margin of error, though.

I do agree with you on this one. I use my OTS and Station Playlist..and as long as you know how to program it....(just don't use your own bias) it does great. If you keep on doing it yourself...it gets boring and predictable.

Travis is a great guy and really knows his stuff, but he's not an A/C or Hot A/C guy and that's why the station sounds like it does. Andrew Jeffires is the PD of STAR, but he is now in LA and even though he is still the PD, his focus is LA (after all it is the number 1 REVENUE market). Problem with STAR right now is that it is too rock oriented (Bon Jovi, Def Leppared, etc.), it needs to swing back to POP again to compete with ALICE which just beat STAR for the first time since PPM began last July.

There is one guy who is available right now who could fix things for CC and balance STAR out musically, but they probably won't figure that out for another 6 months until STAR has dropped to #15 25-54. The other issue is talent. With the departure of Sylvia Chacon last week, now the only LIVE body is Don Bleu. how many more times can you hear the same old Bleupers.

C'mon, give up the name, bcradiodj.

Ah yes, a man after my own heart as the saying goes.

I couldn't have said it better, David.

As stated here numerous times, I know for a fact that I could program a radio station, and my own radio program by playing songs that I know people in general will like.

By DJ'ing live in the Poster Room Lounge @ The Fillmore for the past 7 years, I've gotten instant feedback on my sets, and they've never failed to elicit an overwhelmingly positive response.

I've also gotten rave responses to my Playlist.com sets that I post on my blog.

The reason people relate to these sets is because they are comfortably familiar, and highly entertaining.

One of the most memorable moments for me as a DJ is still the time that I went in the studio with Steven Seaweed and played a set of songs that I had hand picked for "Hey Mom, I'm on the Bone", which I just happen to be listening to right now.

Now I realize that radio in it's current state is a whole different endeavor, ruled by ratings and ad dollars, but c'mon now no one listening to radio for the muic gives a rats @#$ about that crap, they just wanna hear songs that turn them on!

I used to think that I'd love to be a radio DJ, but not if my hands are going to be tied by the dictates of bean counters and investors.

And yes, I know this is the reality of the radio business as it stands today, but I'd rather stand alone doing my thing for people that really appreciate the value of playing songs that people want to hear.

Cheers to you David,

"Bean counters and investors" ... or, in more basic terms, the people who would hire you and sign your paycheck.

Is it wrong for an employer to expect their employees to follow their guidelines, in radio or any other business?

LOL @ Bob... "im a dj, so i KNOW i can program radio better"... as if there arent a few qualified DJs already in the building at 340. Everyone thinks they can do it better than the next guy, until they get in that seat. I can think of a few people in 340 who can HELP Travis, but i doubt they will take that help.

How'd those guidelines work out for everyone? Get back to me when you're solvent.

That's the problem...Radio IS a business, but not your typical business. They hire these guys who used to work for newspapers, snack companies, etc...and they try to run it like it's all about dollars and cents. And that feeling comes thru on the air...whether it's a ton of commericals or just the same old crappy songs over and over.

It's NOT just any business. It's a marriage between Art and Commerce. Problem is - Commerce has been slapping Art around for the last 15 years.

I know it's not a big deal, but I'm just responding to an earlier post about Don Bleu being the only live shift at STAR. Well, I'm live every Saturday from 10a-3p at Star. BTW...this is Celeste Perry. I know it's just my little 5 hours a week...a far cry from my gig at KFRC but I'm really there. Take care everybody! ::)
