What format should return?

I long for a progressive easy listening station. One that would play music that is interesting, but not jarring. One with processing that doesn't make it sound artificially bright. One with intelligent music selections, from folk, blues, jazz, classical, americana and other genre's. One that would cater to the highest common denominator rather than the lowest. I wish I could hear announcers who could speak intelligently about the music, explaining its significance without hyping me.

That almost describes "One of a Kind, KERA 90.1" before they went talk. I miss 'em.

To bad the KERA music crew and music library didn't migrate over to another station in town after the change. They had a great thing going.

One would ask then, why has our esteemed friends over at KERA:

1. Not began broadcasting in HD . . . .

2. That would give them an HD-2 Channel to broadcast a progressive easy listening station for the 'Highest Common Denomiator"......

Frankly, if all terrestrail radio is going to be is News/Talk/Sports AND meaningless musical pablum..... then I really don't care if goes into technical obsolesence ! !

AND, why hasn't WRR began broadcasting in HD-2, so we can a channel that plays something other than the same old lowest common demoniator selections..... An HD-2 Channel that would play something other than Star Wars soundtracks ans the like ????

Probably because the equipment costs and labor charges for installing HD trnsmission equipment, is too great for KERA. I know the CPB has grants, but I'm not sure if KERA applied for one.

KERA may also want to take the wait-and-see approach before making a commitment to HD broadcasting. They may not want to invest in technology that costs around a quarter of a million dollars, only to see it go obsolete when HD fails.

And yes, I said "when", because unlike HDTV, HD Radio is not mandatory. So far the receivers haven't flooded the market yet, and there's very little in the way of promotion. Watch HD go the way of AM Stereo...

I agree and think HD is a boondoggle before it really gets going. I hate to see CPB (Taxpayer) money being thrown at it, but it’s a drop-in-the-bucket compared to other government waste.

I live in Louisiana and several Public radio stations have taken advantage of the handout which is around 75-80% of the cost. Some have used it for much needed replacement of an aging transmitter, but they could have used a PTFP grant and received 50% of the cost of a non-HD transmitter purchase, this would have been less out of pocket for the station.

Actually, I’m surprised to hear KERA has not installed HD yet but perhaps they are being prudent. There aren’t enough HD radios out there to justify the manpower it would take to do the music with live DJs as they did before, and a computer loaded with music wouldn’t be the same….

Classic Alternative

Different from the Alt that plays songs from bands like Modest Mouse with songs like "Missed The Boat", and tells you they are on the "cutting edge of music"...... ;)

Seriously, isn't that an oxymoron? Is ALT really old enough to be a classic? ???
