What is 91.1 in Austin?

I've been picking up this station on that frequency, and it's very strange. Half the time it's dead air, and the other half they're just playing random junk that shouldn't even be on the radio in my oppinion. Earlier today I heard three songs playing at the same time and some talking in the background. It all sounded like it was being picked up by a cheap Logitech microphone headset from wal-mart.

And isn't the 91.1 frequency between two other stations? Why did someone make a station there if it interfeers with others? Or is it a pirate?

I've heard a 91.1 in South Austin. It's a pirate or as Alex Jones likes to came them-- a microbroadcaster.
I googled, and apparently the same signal used to be used by Radio Free Austin, the talk pirate network back in the 2000's that was shut down by the FCC in 2007.
Since it was shut down I guess it can't come back, so maybe it's some one else running that station now. The question is, what is it for? In the few minutes I've listened, it's been mostly talk or random strange music and background noise.

but according to most people on this board, "its better than KVET"

Hahaha. People need to stop complaining about KVET's switch. It was over six months ago.

Yea, OK, back to 91.1...... ;)

At one time the feds were interested in this pirate when it was at Raymond Frank's house. There was a raid, it disappeared, the popped back up again from a more southerly location. I don't know where it's coming from now, but the feds appear to have lost interest.

Oops. Sorry, never mind. :-[ Indeed, I thing Sheriff Frank is back.

Any idea what they played when they were at Sheriff Frank's house?

At the risk of being wrong again ;D, the Raymond Frank pirate was Alex Jones and that kind of....stuff. Lots of commercials for buying gold, survival food, etc.

You are correct. They have shows that feed the fears of the audience and the advertisers are more than happy to to take their money to make them feel safer.

So 90.1 and 91.1 are both pirates? I found 90.1 a few minutes ago and heard Alex Jones on it. This guy is an idiot, he sounds like he's got rocks in his throat or something, and all he seems to talk about is the end of the country.

Jones is the classic conspiracy theorist. He's a whack job but oddly entertaining at the same time, if you are amused at the freak show aspect of things.

Jones actually has widespread coverage as his show is carried on shortwave via WWCR in Nashville.

The 90.1 signal in Austin is actually quite good when I've checked it. Don't recall hearing 91.1 on my last trip there.

Few weeks ago on April 7th I picked up 91.1 again when I was in Austin. Dead air but with a very quiet 60 hz cycle hum or whatever it's called. Are they dead air often? They might as well fill the gap and broadcast a Top 40 Internet station like 100 HIT Radio and compete with KHFI if they're keeping the transmitter on. http://listen.radionomy.com/100-hit-radio.m3u

As for 90.1 I picked them up then as well and they're happy it seems.
