What is 98.1 in Knoxville?

According to a birdie, the FCC did not knock on his door, and he should be thankful.

The Duke is indeed at 107.9. That's why I was confused.

If one does not have a personal dog in the fight, or if it does not have any direct effect on the person who feels the need to report these guys, it is really none of anyone else's business if someone has a pirate station on the air or not. People need to stop going around trying to be a hero by tattling to the FCC on these guys.

For people who feel the need to rat on this guy and other pirate radio operators, my question is this. By ratting on this guy, how do you benefit personally? Is there something in it for you? What do any of you have to gain personally?

I fail to understand why so many people feel they have something to personally gain by reporting these guys. Seems some people have nothing else better to do with their time. I understand that some pirate broadcasts have inappropriate material, however as long as a person is playing music only and is not saying anything offensive on the air, or interfering with another radio station's signal, what's the big deal? He doesn't have a license, so what? There are lots of small and trivial things that are ridiculously illegal, and it's not like he's committed murder or something.

For those of you who feel the need to report these guys, how many of you same folks violate the seatbelt law by not buckling up? How many of you same folks break the law by shooting off fireworks in Knox County, which is ILLEGAL to do? I'd be curious to know how many of you folks who are against these pirate radio broadcasters who want to report these same guys don't wear their seatbelt and how many of you shoot off fireworks during the 4th of July in Knox County. How many laws do you some of you same folks break? Perhaps some of the people who feel the need to report pirate broadcasts who violate these other laws should also be reported.

For those who are so worried about it, who oppose pirate radio, are any of you willing to contribute any financial backing for these guys who want to start a radio station legally? I didn't think so!

Considering how commercial radio is nothing more than a corporate controlled monopoly where the smaller guy has no chance of obtaining an FCC license or a station, I personally do not blame some of these folks who decide to start up stations like that. These guys are freedom fighters and my heroes. The greedy and monopolizing corporate radio stations are the enemy.

The guy at 98.1 may be gone, however the fact is that pirate radio in general is here to stay like it or not.

I couldn't give a damn if he operates a pirate or not, and I certainly wasn't implying that. I just said that he should be glad that the FCC didn't get ahold of him.

Just who are you? Obviously you jump to conclusions and have a hard time inferring comments. Even if that was what I meant, why criticize any one broadcaster on this board who follows the law and bends over backwards EVERYDAY to stay in compliance with the FCC?

Raingus, I don't think any of us here wants this guy to get caught. If that is what you are assuming, then I agree with ratman2005 that you are jumping to conclusions. I started this thread (nearly two years ago!) mainly because I was curious as to how much power he was running to get such great coverage. The 98.1 signal didn't get too far south (mainly because of the terrain I guess) but it carried well into central Knoxville and even threw an impressive signal into Alcoa!

Whether someone operates a pirate or not doesn't concern me at all, unless I was running a legal station that was being interferred with, but then I guess that would qualify me as having a dog in the fight ;D

I'm not criticizing broadcasters who bend over backwards to please the FCC. The one's I am criticizing are those who feel the need to stick their noses in someone else's business who do not have a personal dog in the fight. You may have felt like my rant was directed at you, however I never once accused you of being that person who got the guy at 98.1 into trouble Ratman. Considering how my 2nd post (Rant) followed your comment, I can understand how you might have felt like you were being accused.

My earlier post, however was directed at you. I was only asking you how was it that the FCC did him a favor? It was an honest question. I have to admit that I did detect sarcasm in your comment, although it may not had been your intention to sound sarcastic. It's sometimes hard to tell exactly what people mean online, as it is hard to express oneself over the internet as you already know.

As for my rant, I have seen comments on this board in other posts from certain individuals who seem to want to be a hero by going around and reporting pirates just out of spite, as if they have something to gain from it. I can understand if one has a radio station that they are somehow affiliated with that is interfering with their signal. However, this guy had been around since 1996, and had done nothing to hurt anyone. He played music and that was it.

You ask who I am?

I am an advocate for Free Radio, and I oppose Media Consolidation (Corporate Radio). I believe in having more diversity in the radio market that concentrates on having radio stations that provide good programming unlike the corporates who chase after the big bucks for the sake of greed. I believe the smaller guy should be given a fair chance to own a radio station.

I also oppose the NAOB.

And....he's back again! Time for another round of exposure to possible prosecution!

And boy...does that Comcast music fill an important need in the market!!

It's been back for a few months now at least. And actually it is filling a need somewhat. I was hoping after the Christmas music, they would flip it back to '80s now that The Point is gone... and guess what... they are playing the '80s format. Good job 98.1 guy (or gal)

This is obviously not a true statement. It is readily apparent that there are anal-retentive losers who have nothing better to do than hunt down these evil doers and post addresses. I'm sure that while he's telling his parents that he's out looking for work so they can get him out of their house, this individual is out secretly hunting for those elusive pirates that are destroying the very fiber of Americana. I'm sure this person has a long arm for patting himself on the back.

Amen and Amen!!!! ;D

These darn pirates are also responsible for hurting our nation's economy, and possibly taking away listeners from Corporate radio. Awww.....Poor Corporate Radio. :'(

Like it or not, there will always be pirate radio stations regardless of what happens to the guy at 98.1.

The head of the Atlanta office says...We like pirates! It's like shooting fish in a barrel!!

FCC issues $10,000 pirate fine.
The FCC says Steven Skalecki was running an illegal station at 92.9 from his Milwaukee home. Skalecki claims the pirate station was operated from another nearby property and that he was running a “weather monitoring station” but the FCC didn't buy it.

Can't catch (shoot) every fish that's out there. Too many fish in the sea for them to catch. *winks*
