What is going on at WROD in Daytona?

I was down there about a month ago and noticed the same problems, too. I just figured they must have mounted their FM antenna on the AM stick and it de-tuned the AM. 1340 always has had a nice, robust signal, but yes, barely audible or non-existent in almost all of Daytona. I was happy to hear the FM at 104.7, but thought that perhaps if their antenna were jacked up higher they would do much better in covering the area. Yes, I did notice more variety in the music than in the past couple of years. Before it was more 50's and early 60's. I have them on my Tune-In-Radio presets, but they haven't been there as of late. I wish them well as I have been a big fan of the station since it's Top 40 days right on thru the 25 years or so they played Standards and up to today. 104.7 is fine, but when I'm back in town, I hope my old favorite, 1340 is loud and clear again.

The owner just let the station GM go according to cflradio.net, after 14 months. Maybe someone caught wind of the problems?

The AM transmitter has been down for the past seven weeks. I know the website has been down and the Internet stream has gone down in the past week as well. Working to find out more.

The rules say the translator is supposed to shut down if the AM hasn't operated in the last 24 hours. Violations would not be a surprise.

However there is one excpetion which legally allows an FM translator to originate programming and that is when it is used to re-broadcast a daytme only AM station. When the AM station leaves the air at local sunset, the translator may continue operation 24 hours.

Yep, that's what I mean -- a translator relaying an AM daytimer may continue to operate after the AM signs off at sunset, as long as the AM station has operated within the previous 24 hours. If WXXX-AM is required to sign off at 7:45pm, W199XX may continue to air the WXXX programming. Presumably WXXX signs back on at, say, 6:30 the next morning, and the 24-hour clock is reset. If WXXX *doesn't* sign back on before 7:45 the next night, the translator is supposed to shut down.

But again, violations would not be surprising.

Apparently the owner is having severe money problems... he's a land developer in over his head...named Joe Hopkins... (no relation) ... he's refusing to reimburse advertisers for when he's been off air... sources say he tried to engineer everything himself and blew up the AM transmitter while trying to "duck tape" the FM... he's also fired everyone on the staff in the last several months... Dave Schultze... Caddillac Jack... just playing music off of YouTube... just hired a woman who does marketing for a real estate firm to do mornings for a few bucks... what a mess... such potential with 104.7 blown by an amateur radio operator... would be a good station to buy from the bankruptcy trustee in a year... stream is down too...go to wrodam.com

Having worked at WROD in 1982 and 1983 when it was programming Al Ham's Music of Your Life, I'm glad to hear AM 1340 is back on the air.
