What is "independent" about KLU?

Tired Old Dog...what's your beef with Oasis? Are you a competitor or just jealous? Oasis (with the addition of the two stations he seems to be buying) owns 4 stations total. Clear Channel owns 1200. How does 4 stations make Oasis corporate? Seroiusly, what's your deal? There can be no doubt that you work at one of the coporate guys who he's gutting.

If Clear Channel, Cumulus, Citadel, Emmis, Entercom offered Russ a check for his Indianapolis station, at the price he is asking, he would toss them the keys with little regard for the future of the format or employees. There isn't a benevolent bone in his body.

It is all about the money. It has nothing to do with "independent radio."

He just can't sell it for the price he wants as the multiples people pay for radio stations are falling...and his cash flow doesn't justify the price he wants...so he is forced to operate. Keep costs low; hire somewhat boring card readers as jocks (paying them minimum wage-just ask Ritz), micro manage it; don't offer health benefits and wait til the multiples rise.

I just can't figure out why he wants to expand in Ft. Wayne. He will obviously turn around the Angotti stations as AMP makes us in the corporate world look like saints. He must have got them for a song, or realizes corporate companies like NRC, Regent, Connisuer (sp), Saga, are going to be expanding and will pay top dollar for a fixed up cluster of stations vs. a fixed up stick in medium to smaller markets.

If that is his game...he should really look at the "bag of dung" Crossroads owns down in Terre Haute.

Call it "flip this cluster"

Now I get it Spark Gap...anyone who wants to make money while they do good radio is bad. Yea..Oasis is a real greedy guy. KLU plays 5 or 6 commercials an hour (vs 18 or more at your station). KLU is live all the time. I don't know about Adam Ritz, but could he think that KLU is bad because he got fired (like he did at his last job). Yea...Oasis...what a loon. Imagine, him wanting to sell a station and make a profit while running a popular station that doesn't rape listeners! I gotta figure that you're just embarrassed that the little guy is kicking your station in the gonads.

I never said a thing about making money in radio is bad; or how you do it. What I am saying is; realize Oasis is not a benevolent sort. Just there for the buck. His strategy is flip the station fast. His tactic is play lots of music with few breaks to get the ratings and revenue up. He has accomplished that. Much to the chagrin of some corporate types who thought you could never do anything with 3kw in Brownsburg.

No different from a house flip where you remodel the kitchen and bath. That was a great way to make money fast...oops the interest rates went up.

The problem Oasis has run into is strictly the multiples people are willing to pay for stand alone fm class A stations are falling fast. His dream of selling for $30MM is just that...a dream. Ooops stations aren't selling for 23x cash flow anymore...it's down to 14x.

Old Skool...do your math, and quit drinking the Kool Aid.

Radio One paid 18 million for an unbuilt construction permit in
a Cincinnati suburb. Dream on prices are up not down. Russ
got KLU cheap in a firesale after a guy had a stroke.

OK Spark Gap, I get it. You're not really talking about WKLU, you just don't like Oasis. I got no dog in that fight. That's up to you. I do think that WKLU is the best station that Indy's had in a long time.

The problem with radio is disingenuous owners. Russ Oasis is no savior of radio. He is as disingenuous as Clear Channel and the rest.

Old Skool is Russ Oasis. Here is the proof:

The following three paragraphs are posts made by Old Skool regarding Oasis and WKLU:

"OK Spark Gap, I get it. You're not really talking about WKLU, you just don't like Oasis. I got no dog in that fight. That's up to you. I do think that WKLU is the best station that Indy's had in a long time."

The following is a paragraph from the Oldies 50’s/60’s board where Old Skool is responding to frequent contributor David Eduardo:

"Dave, my agency was a major one. ($100,000,000+ back 10 years ago). I agree that the very large national advertisers do their homework, which is why GM will buy 55+ for Cadillac or Ford for Lincoln. Unfortunately, there just aren't enough older target clients to support oldies (as I think you would agree). I actually think that this will change over time."

This is from the Northeastern University Alumni magazine with an article about their alumnus Russ Oasis:

"But eventually Oasis got tired of getting fired all the time. With a colleague, he opened a radio advertising agency that became Miami’s third-largest all-around ad agency. By 1987, he’d earned enough to buy his first radio station, and in 1993 he sold the agency to devote himself full time to radio, concentrating on the Spanish-language market in South Florida. "

So riddle me this...

Why would a guy who owned an advertising agency with $100MM+ in billing, spend so much time on the Indiana Radio Info Board defending Oasis and WKLU if it wasn’t Oasis?

Darn straight Oasis wants to make money. You all seem to be looking for a millionaire owner who has money to blow for a very expensive hobby. Not gonna happen.

SO WHAT if Old Skool is Russ Oasis?

If he wanted you to know, he'd say, "Hello, the name I'm using on here is Old Skool, but in reality I am none other than Russ Oasis."

This isn't "What's My Line" or "To Tell the Truth". You should be able to say what you want to say without being persecuted and forced to reveal your identity everytime you have an opinion.

I'm sick of people doing that.

Make your point and take someone's opinion on it's own merits. Stop "outing" (for the umpteenth time!).

::)

I have never read such 3rd grade drivel in my life. You guys who think that Oasis is disingenuous for wanting to make money are losers. Never think big, never think out of the box. Only think about diminishing the other guy. Have a blast. Let's say I am Russ Oasis. Who are you?

I don't think you are disengenuous for wanting to make money. I just think you are disengenuous for your tactics of hiding behind "the independent, doing what's good for radio" charade. Like someone said earlier it's "flip this house" nothing more. The market changed.

I think you are disengenuous for referring yourself in third person on a regular basis.

Quinn, Shirk, Conner, and those guys were in it for radio's sake. Guys with sticks that did it for the hobby aspect. Money wasn't the motivator.

Your whole game is based on the "bigger fool" theory. Until the multiples of cash flow start to rise, you get to wear the "bigger fool" crown.

Quinn and Shirk may have had sticks, but when did Cris Conner ever have one? He was just a jock and for a while pd of the old WNAP.
