What is the deal with 104.1?

In his comment that John "didn't have much of a final vote on what happened", Brian has hit on the real problem of radio today. Very few decisions are made at he local level in companies like CC, Entercom, etc.

I recall the early days of working for Clear Channel when the Mays boys always relied on the local managers to make the decisions. It really wasn't until the merger with Jacor that things started to centralize. It got worse with the AM/FM merger.

Ding Ding Ding Ding...we have a winner.

Years ago (25 years?)there was a popular book out called "Up the Organization" that said the more layers an organization has the more ineffective it becomes. The best companies are those where middle managers have direct contact with the top guy. Don't guess that happens too much in today's corporations. Maybe that's why so many of them have problems. Our government is a perfect example of multi-layered beaurocracy that is sluggish and functions very poorly. Not sure there is any answer for the CC's of the world. :p

It's a shame there has to be a winner between TQR and The Wolf. Personally, I'm rooting for a jet airliner to take out both buildings.

OOH, BDM

TOO SOON!

Not really all that soon, Dittohead. That TQR morning guy croaked about 5 years ago, right?

Doug was funny until this:

Now he's just a prick

What do you want Doug? The poor guy was killed in a motorcycle accident! Your comment was totally uncalled for. Try to be civil on this board and quit trying to be funny which you aren't.

Some people just don't know when to stop. That was carrying it just a bit too far.

Paul Franklin was one of the greatest guys I ever worked with .... Big Doug .... shame on you .... he was a great professional and a great man and friend.

u don't know metzenbaum...he CAN'T be bigger than that. he is INCAPABLE.

I am just curious how you found this website Tom? You must be in the business or you would not have known about it?
When WFMX went off the air I decided I wanted to see people ranting, and I found a great site for it.

All it takes is the right search engine. This site was the first thing that came up for months in a search for "WFMX" from imdb.com. If I was reviewing a movie, I used the search engine they provided in case I wanted to check my facts.

I'm nothing but a listener.

While every station in those buildings is automated, of course.

And then WIST can take over, playing the REAL country music!

It's the only country station I listen to.

I also found this site when WFMX died, and have since found this site useful to track all the other craziness that has happened since then. :)

i dont want to hijack the thread, but you triad country radio fans would know the answer to this...

whatever happened to 'smokin joe' who was on whistle 100 (the country years) in the late 90s. i heard a rumor that he had died. hopefully that isnt true.

smokin' joe upright died of a heart attack in nashville several years ago.

Ditto is correct... Pretty sad story. Joe got woo'd by the third Nashsville Ctry (KDF?) in 99 or 00 I believe. The money was very good compared to whatever AMFM was paying him (which I doubt was really bad considering it was AMFM). Joe and his sidekick / producer headed for Tune Town and either the night before his FIRST show or the night of his debut his sidekick called 911 and the rest is history. He never even made it on the air.

He was a Charlotte / Concord native and driving down to his funeral in Clt, I remember hearing no less than 3 or 4 different radio personalities from various formats / companies acknowledging his death. I remember thinking this guy knew alot more people than I ever realized.
