What is the Future of The Fan?

I listen to the Fan as one of my pre-sets while driving.

I will say that some of their decisions have been less than outstanding. The "competition" to host the Newy Scruggs show failed them as in retrospect (and this is always 20-20) I would have hired Whitt to sit with Newy and figured out a way to keep Richard Durrett who has a local name.

In addition; the people they have brought in have for more the most part not been good fits in Dallas. Hey, I have a New York accent but let me assure you that listening to an accent like that in Dallas does not fit. You need to not have such a bad voice. I know people can move from other parts of the country but right now; they have exactly ONE show (Newy and Richie) with Dallas "Street Cred".

The other problem is, the phone calls are almost always terrible. Phone calls are fine; but use them to pace the show; go fast and use them to make riffs about what YOU want to say. I think there are too many bad phone calls right now; and I think part of the problem is frankly too many COWBOYS phone calls -- the Fan needs to make sure they broaden a bit into the other sports so they do not sound too Johnny One-Note. ESPN gets away with a lot of Cowboys talk because they carry the Mavs and can do a few bits on the Mavs.

I don't listen to the Ticket so I can not comment on them -- but I will say if I were ESPN Dallas, I'd try to eliminate carring Cowherd from 9-11 and rejigger the lineup a bit:

ESPN Network Midnight till Mike and Mike
Mike and Mike till 9 AM
Local Show 9-12
Michael Irvin etc 12-3
GAC, etc 3-6
The show Wally Lynn is on, etc 6-9
One more Local Host 9-12

Then repeat

I'd also work on adding some weekend local hosts for most bench strength for ESPN

KESN is not going to get more local. It is an owned-and-operated station of ESPN. It and the other owned affiliates, like corporate sibling Radio Disney, exist solely to extend the brand. All the O&Os have to carry Mike & Mike and clear some of the rest of the daytime schedule whether it be Cowherd's show or Van Pelt's show.

KRLD-FM uses the same formula most sports stations use. If you go to most any other market, you would find the local sports stations use the formula: find a local sports anchor to have a show, ditto for a sports columnist, take lots of listener calls, talk 90% about the local biggest team (whether pro or college), etc. However, this is not most any other market and the long-time dominant sports station set the bar to be more than just taking calls or reading texts from listeners all day. Too often, a lot of the callers sound like real-life versions of the "Ed Carter Sports Hotline"...

I find the caller based shows to be quite amusing seeing that many of the callers are MO-Rons.
