What is up with indie 1031???

"I just don't understand how it gets such rave reviews and such awful ratings"

I think it gets rave reviews because it plays a more interesting variety of rock than stations like KROQ or KYSR. KROQ got similar reviews back in the late 70s before they had any ratings.

In reality, wouldn't it be impossible to be competitive with any format on the 103.1 signal?

103.1 when it was KSRF in the 1970s programming beautiful music didn't have any ratings up against KOST, KBIG or KJOI and didn't have any ratings when it was AC in the 1980s.

Those who don't think Indie is the right format for 103.1, what would you do with the station if it was given to you next week?

Radio is a business. To put the first and second FMs in an entire country on the air required that I had a number of very profitable AM stations to pay the bills for a long time.

I hear ya Dave! but to most listeners, its entertainment. I think more then a couple people here that post about Indie are doing so as music/radio fans looking to be entertained. and on that level they are getting what they are looking for from their a radio dial.

thats not a bad thing.

Of course, sarcasm is hard to convey on the internet, and I failed this time. I definitely understand why the station gets the rave reviews... it appeals to a "rock elite" which is vocal in total disproportion to its size... many of whom are nowhere near the coverage and market area of KDLD.

It's been my experience that most stations that meet the test of this elite do not achieve commercial success, and perish for it.

The OC signal would make a nice Vietnamese signal, and would definitely be better than 1480 in coverage and quality.

The Santa Monica signal is probably hopeless.

Duplicating a full market format is suicide; niching is the only alternative.

In this economy, I think I would say "no" unless I could turn around and sell it immediately to the next person who thinks they have the Holy Grail of Class A FMs.

I think the stations that get the most respect among radio fans are those that manage to bridge the gap between popularity and quality.

KHJ in its glory days.
KRTH in its glory days.
WCBS in its glory days.
KMET late 70s, early 80s.
KROQ early 80s to mid 90s.
KPWR in the "Power" days, and again in the early days of hip hop. (Not my fave, but I think many people liked, it.)
KLSX in its first few years....
