What is wrong with 55WKRC?

The latest Cincinnati book shows 55KRC going in the wrong direction. The question is why?
We all know that Jerry Thomas son Brian is not him. Is it the market feels the network line up has gone stale?

I feel part of the problem is it is the step child of Clear Channel on the AM dial. I know they tried to go local in afternoon drive and pulled the plug. What about a Dan Caroll, the one time TV anchor and doing fill in on WLW, doing a local slot of '55? I would like to hear him in afternoon drive over hearing the same thing over and over again with what they now offer.

If you were in the GM seat what would you do with '55KRC. I have an idea what I would do but what would you suggest?

What do you think WKRC is? A station?

It's a right-wing cult, not a station.

If you were in the GM seat what would you do with '55KRC.

Take it off the air for lack of interest.

With elections next year, 'krc will be fine. I enjoy Brian Thomas. Brian and Darryl Parks are the only 2 local shows I regularly listen to. Dan Carroll should be on WLW, any shift. He did a nice job yesterday. Steve Hawkins should also be on air more. I'd love to see Merlin come to town and shake things up.

The problem with 55 regards the wild ride the frequency has had over the last quarter century. When Randy Michaels jumped ship to 700 he took the enthusiasm and focused on bringing WLW from the early sixties to modern day appealing to younger demos. Those listeners they attracted so many years ago still cume WLW which explains why they still have good ratings. Granted their listeners are getting older but they are in better shape as other old line 50kw clear channels like KDKA, WJR and others. Meanwhile 55 didn't know what to do through the rest of the eighties then came the Jacor purchase and the parade of call letters only helped WLW.

Bottom line, 55KRC is nothing more than a place to clear syndicated Clear Channel programming.

Cincinnati is not a fan of syndicated programming either. It also is not helping that Rush and Hannity are doing the same old shows/act day after day as they have been for the last 10 to 15 yrs.

There doesn't appear to be anyone maintaining WKRC. For example, if you listen to Mark Levin, the same "Fox news - Shep Smith" liners have been running in the same breaks, in the same order, for at least 2 years, maybe longer. I never hear any kind of promos for other shows on WKRC. As a former programmer, I notice these things. The general audience hears them in a different way. The station sounds tired. The liners, promos, and other elements need a reboot / refresh.

Brian Thomas is okay, but comes across sometimes as a syndication wannabe... example, not long ago, another poster talked about how BT was droning on about the economy after the tri-state had wide spread power outages from severe storms. He did the same thing last winter after the big ice storm. He either has a lousy producer, or is becoming the next candidate for syndicated uniblab... Maybe Daryl will give him a national "weekend" show, where he won't be troubled by local issues.

One thing I do like about 55KRC... The local news updates, and weather. You almost never hear a stale forecast or newscast. The news and weather personalities add something good to the station. It means that I don't have to tune away to WLW for an update. Some CC stations run Fox news, and 4 minutes of spots-promos... no local news or weather. WHAS is known for this. That's being lazy and irresponsible.

I'd convert it back to the old 55KRC (NOT55Wkrc), with music, sports, etc. Maybe bring back Rapline and D&D on Friday nights. They can't swipe AccuWeather from 1480 but they do have WXIX or...do they reunite with WKRC? Could move Thomas to afternoons and put on Eddie Fingers in the morning.

Move Rush back to 1530 and weed out the rest of the CC cavalade of fading stars. Rush does air on Sports/News outlets.

Just a thought or two.

Clear Channel would probably not put anything decent in afternoon drive on WKRC because they don't want to harm Sloanie & Tracy on WLW.

That's really all WKRC is to Clear Channel. They won't put anything big on it because WLW is the flagship of Clear Channel Cincinnati for obvious reasons. Only way that changes is if WKRC were sold to a new owner and that probably won't happen

Any one know what Thomas's numbers are in the morning? He consistently interrupts guests and thinks it's a race to see how many words he can squeeze into any period of time. If he had a neutral political view he would not even be on the air in this large of a market. Soon KRC's core audience will be to old to matter anyway.

"... He consistently interrupts guests and thinks it's a race to see how many words he can squeeze into any period of time...."

Ain't that the truth. The guy simply talks annoyingly fast.

HELLO! It's morning drive you geniuses. He has traffic, weather, Fox news, local news, spot loads, and he's taking calls. I'd say you have to talk pretty damn fast.

@microbob...I don't think they use compression on the morning show, didn't they use to use it for Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh & Sean Hannity so they could squeeze more spots in?

The Big Dog who programs the station needs to get some balls and stand up to CC and get some more local programming on it.....I agree with Dan Carroll (Afternoons) that has a nice ring to it......

I do remember them using it on Rush & Hannity, a few years ago. I don't know if they still do or not as I don't listen to them any more. I agree with you on local programming especially in the afternoons.

I don't think he's sped up electronically. He just talks fast. It's uncomfortably fast if you ask me.

I'm not in the business but as others have mentioned, having one owner for the two strong talk signals in town can't be good for improving the product..from the listener's point of view.

You can only take Rush or Hannity for so long then it really does get very repetitive. Thank goodness there is the Willie option while Rush is on.

If only there was another option to listen to at 3-6. The wlw offering is just unlistenable garbage but Hannity is always his same old political diatribe.

I think Willie is actually the only thing that keeps that station known as a Talker. Without him there's really no one who can do a non-morning talk show. I think Jim Scott could pull it off if he wanted to, but I don't think he'd ever leave mornings.

55WKRC used to be a fun and entertaining station. They have had Stan Matlock, Bob Jones, Rich King, Jerry Thomas and others. The are not fun or entertaining anymore.

Yes they will pick up a bit in ratings and revenue in the election year of 2012. But they are like WHIO in Dayton a boring radio station.

I haven't listened to them for any long period of time past nine am in years. I know they won't do it but I woud love for a local afternoon show with some real local stuff on than want we get up the dial from 3 to 6pm. But will they go local . No way.

It's a disgrace what they have done to 1530 WCKY. One local show in a sports town with pro and college teams and a strong high school base. Is it a 50,000 sports powerhouse or just a wimp of s station?

Well, back on point is there ever going to be hope for 55KRC or is it just another bad AM radio station?

"The noontime alternative to Rush is not Willie, but Dennis Miller, on 1160/WQRT."
................................................................................................................................................

I can't pick up WQRT.......I'm southeast of town. From what I see of Miller on Bill O's show, I don't think I could take it for very long.

Sorry, but saying that Dennis Miller is the noontime alternative to Rush Limbaugh is like saying a chicken nugget is an alternative to prime rib. Dennis Miller is so bad that not only does his wife not listen to him, but she also records his show and then doesn't listen to him again later. Comparing the Dennis Miller station line-up to Rush's is like comparing the Bengals line-up to the Patriot's. Okay, I have now officially abused my right to free speech so I will take my meds and go to bed. :D
