What kind of format would you call 96.1

It's Rock Without Jocks.

I was thinking I heard some Cure and some OMD and Depeche Mode when they first changed over. Maybe even some Duran Duran? Their playlist listed on 96rockonline seems to be all rock-based today though.

It really is pathetic that Raleigh doesnt have a real rock station now.
I agree. As much as I like WKIX-AM and probably would like WQDR-AM but was out of range when it was on the air, there are just certain formats every market should have.

Rock AC is a good descriptor. Arbitron seems to put all of these gold based stations under the "Classic Hits" format.
I guess that's an advertiser/Agency friendly term.

The industry term for the Radio 96.1 format is Adult Hits.

There is a rock station in Raleigh - WKNC.

Thats even more pathetic, with how big of a market the triangle is now. This area has had all time great rock stations like WQDR and WRDU, which makes it even sadder.

LOL Rock AC? Who invented it? Ive never heard a station quite like 96.1 before.

I believe WMMO Orlando was the first.

Thinking about them in comparison, 96.1 is more Rock Hot AC.

Times have changed. 15 to 20 years ago a large percentage of young males 18-34 liked Rock as
their favorite genre of music. Today, they are just as likely to like Hip Hop. Pulse and G105 have pretty large male audiences.

Rock ain't what it used to be. But, I believe a straight ahead Classic Rocker like The Fox in Charlotte would do pretty well in Raleigh. The River is not rock in anyway.

Radio 96.1 made a big format change without drawing a lot of attention to it. It's more mass appeal now.
So far, it's working in the Ratings, but time will tell.

There was a News & Observer article article not so long ago.

Essentially it asked: Is Motley Crue better than Kiss?

And this station is still getting requests for both.

Now with 100.7 becoming generally a classic rock station, I still see 96.1 coming up with an active/alternative rock hybrid station. Southern markets like Raleigh have trouble sustaining a true alternative station like WKZQ in Myrtle Beach so the few alternative stations around that are alternative lean active in their playlist such as the End in Charlotte. 96.1 should shift to an active/alternative hybrid. More alternative during the day and more active at night with special shows once a week to feel in the niches for both. It can be done.

WKZQ was active rock once. I can tell a real difference. It sounds like someone took away the station's ability to have children. But the ratings in recent years haven't been good, and I even recall someone saying Rock 107 was doing better. I don't even think WKZQ is listed this time.

96.1 is fast becoming a true AOR station; All Over the Road. They want to have ALL the listeners, so they're playing everything. Sign one of the radio apocalyse in Raleigh. Don Curtis strikes again.
