What Morning Show Do you Listen To?

I used to like Bill Lee. He has a great voice. But at the end of his run here in SF, he was at (then) K-101, did afternoons, absolutely everything he would say had a chuckle...EVERYTHING. It got to be that it became so annoying that I couldn't listen anymore. Oh it was so aggravating.

I ran into a friend of mine that was working at K-101 and she told me that a lot of employees there were tired of his constant chuckle everytime he opened the mic.

I believe he added the 'Broadway' when he went back to New York.

Just my 2 cents...... HEY!? If it's a penny for your thoughts and 'just my 2 cents worth'... where does that extra penny go?

Worked with him a couple places. Chuckling never bothered me, but everybody has their own taste in air work. He and Beth were good people, and he was fun to work with.

Jimmy Jet was truly bizarre...fun, but bizarre. He's been out of the business for many years. You can find one aircheck of his work - KYA about 1974 - on reelradio.com. In the comments, there's an amusing entry by Ken Levine ("Beaver Cleaver" before becoming a TV scriptwriter) who recalls that when he first came to town for his KYA job, he tuned in the station on the way from the airport, heard Jimmy Jet on-air, and figured he may have made a big mistake...

Kenny - I notice Cammy's not on your list. How many reasons are there for that? You don't have to list them - just a total would be fine.

Las Vegas oddsmakers have set the over-and-under at 37-1/2.

Please make sure you contact your bookie by noon (Pacific Time), when Kenny will reveal the number. ;D

Oh, I'm taking the over...

It's 3:30PM NY time (12:30 Pacific Time) - so, Kenny, if you're reading this, how come (though it's obvious to ME :)) that you didn't put Cammy on your list??

Andreajesus, seriously,, from 1993 till the time she left KFRC was some of the most dreadful radio I ever heard! Her voice was annoying, and you always had to hear about her classic 1963 Ford Falcon,, and eating! She wasnt that music oriented, and combining her and Parker for so many years, afternnons ,then mornings, it was getting stale! At the time the TOH guy was Bobby Ocean,,,I got to say, after almost ,,, 8 years of this Duo,, it was time to move on! And in 2001 when Bobby Ocean returned it was like a breath of fresh air! The 90s @ KFRC werent the best, although i will say Gary Bryan and J. Paul Emerson took charge of morning drive, they were by far the best morning dou KFRC ever had!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RIP J Paul Emerson,,, no one did news like you! Gil Haar couldnt hold a candle to J Pauls delivery of the news! And Dave Bramnick was constantly suspending these two! You gotta wonder/ Kenny in Concord

Oh, lord...here we go again. Whenever Kenny goes into ecstasy over Bryan and Emerson, I have to "set the record straight."

J. Paul Emerson had a great stentorian voice - I don't know how his career started, but I'd bet $5 that he was one of those over-dramatic pompous bass-baritone newsmen that all Top 40 stations had to have in the 60s. In fact, I'd bet $5 more he stole his on-air handle from KHJ's J. Paul Huddleston. Too bad he was never on KYA with Roger W. Morgan.

On KFRC in the early 90s, I'm sure he was supposed to be the newsman second banana to Gary Bryan. But he was a right-wing nut job and gradually took over the show with his ravings. It was year or so before right-wing "Hot Talk," and I guess he filled a need and the show got ratings. So KFRC tolerated it. But the station kept suspending him because he kept making hateful, racist and especially homophobic statements. They finally had enough and fired the fool.

Gary Bryan may be hot these days at K-Earth, but at KFRC, he was the stooge, lap-dog, and toady for a homophobic bigot. He did the show solo for awhile after Emerson was fired, but he was lost.

When KSFO started the Hot Talk format, they tried Emerson in morning drive, but he was so off the hook - raving angrily from subject to subject without any segues, he was not even fit for right-wing radio, so they fired him after a couple of weeks. At least Michael Savage (Kenny's other fave) can hold a thought for a few minutes.

I don't know what killed J. Paul - a gay man probably smiled at him on the street and he stroked out. Sorry... no RIP from me - good riddance in my opinion.

Ladies first, Andreajesus, my favorite thing for breakfast is Zoom cereal, a delicious wheat -barley mix, with C&H light brown sugar, and some half7half on it, this cereal is way before your time, onward Lkeller,, Theres no ecstasy here, those two comedians made it big with me the 1st day they were on Sept 93! I knew from the start I found a morning show! As far as J. Paul, i find it ackward to read your sentance about him and good ridance! This guy was an entertainer, and as i recollect, there was alot of listeners calling in when they got suspended, blasting david bramnick!!! J. Paul was so unique, hes one of those who makes you listen, cause you dont want to miss a minute! He did control the show, never in radio would you have the morning show go into overtime, many times they would go into 1/2 hour of Sue halls show! 5 hours wasnt enough somedays! Its strange how certain groups have so much power to get talent fired!!! As far as mike savage, hes made a name for himself since his debut in 1994, no group can get him off the air, hes got enough money to buy his own station! And yes i do listen to him,, hes 100% truth! Last thing Lkeller,,, Gary Bryan has sure come a long way from the KYA1260 days when he was "Jumbo Jack Bryan , in 1976! RIP J Paul Emerson,, one of your biggest fans ,Kenny in Concord

RIP J Paul Emerson...

1) I actually remember Zoom (I'm older than I sound... :))
2) I thought I recall J. Paul Emerson being on the old WQHT in New York back in the 80's or something...

Lkeller, J. Paul Emerson died of a heart attack in either Southern California or Phoenix...can't
remember. The Emerson obit blurb in the SF Chronicle was VERY brief...

Just before he died, I remember reading a news byline where Emerson wrote a book that was
expensive to purchase. Its theme was how to be a radio personality, written in large-type...
a ripoff with mis-spellings, basically...

When Emerson was suspended by KFRC for his take on Judge Robert Ito (of the O.J. Simpson
Trial fame), using the Dixie Cups' "Iko Iko" and transforming it into "Ito, Ito," that was the
beginning of the end of Emerson's career. Emerson became a raving lunatic, a total turnoff...
and far, far from what he was when he started his KFRC stint with Gary Bryan in 1993/94.
A sad story...

Thanks, Jay . Interesting information. His short stint on KSFO proved what a lunatic he had become. I remember tuning in because the "Hot Talk" format was new, and because his show was an unbelievable train wreck, and very bizarre to listen to. "J. Paul" sounded like he had totally lost it, and was not well...mentally. Obviously, PD Jack Swanson realized this could not go on.

In case people think my views against Emerson are entirely political - I actually became a big fan of Emerson's replacement -Lee Rodgers. Though I don't share many political views with the right-wing Rodgers, I found his show compelling. I like listening to opposing viewpoints, and Rodgers is incredibly eloquent. When Lee decides to rip somebody (or something) apart, it is well thought out and articulate, unlike the un-hinged Emerson.

Interestingly, the Wikipedia page on Emerson states that he "rose to prominence" on KSFO. As we all know, Wikipedia is often wrong...it's a joke in this case...considering Ermerson was only on air for a few weeks (possibly a couple of months) before Swanson pulled the plug.

Among Emerson's other rantings, was a period when he railed against Japanese protests of the Enola Gay display (at the Smithsonian in DC, if I remember correctly) by referring to them repeatedly as "J__ps." Actually, in this case I personally didn't disagree with his viewpoint - that display of the Enola Gay was right and proper, though I did disagree with his unnecessary foray into racist rantings to make his point.

BTW - according to Wikipedia - it looks like I was right about his on-air name. He was born James Emerson Coleman, and originally used "Jimmy Coleman" professionally. He worked in the mid 60s at KYNO (Fresno) - a Bill Drake station, and most likely decided to copy the on-air handle of J. Paul Huddleston a very entertaining and pompous (but non-political) news anchor on "20/20 News" at Drake's flagship station - 93/KHJ in Los Angeles.

After reading the Wikipedia article, it confirmed my suspicions that J. Paul was at WQHT in the 1980's (I think early on when they were at 103.5 FM between 1986-1988) - I thought the name sounded familiar. I vaguely remembered his interesting news reports in the morning - different from the normal stories & delivery.
But as another poster says, you can't believe everything you read on Wikipedia...for example, at one point in J. Paul's "article", the call letters for his New York station were listed as "KQHT" (a Crookston, MN station serving the Grand Forks, ND market). I edited the page to correct the call letters to "WQHT".

Well, yeah, I still listen to Alice's morning show, even though I too do not like that they end it at 9, it feels so short now. But I still like the people. Sarah and Vinnie are funny, and make me laugh. But I am really disappointed in the fact they let the night DJ Dayna go...THAT, was a big mistake. She was the best thing about that station. And her replacement is nothing short of just...boring...and bad. Uninteresting. Just nothing there...Your average Joe....so stupid. I don't get it.

After my alarm goes off at 7:30 am, I turn on the radio in the bathroom, which is set to KUFX 98.5 FM, and I listen to the Greg Kihn Show while I'm taking my shower and preparing to go to work.

When I get into my car to leave for work at 8:30, I tune into KFRC 1550 AM, and listen to Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel for my oldies fix.

At 9:07 AM I switch over to KNBR 1050 to hear Jim Rome's opening monologue, which on Monday mornings can be pretty hilarious, depending on what went down in the sports world over the weekend.

When I arrive to work at 9:30 am I switch over to KFOG 104.5 FM for the Morning Show, which includes Dave Morey's "10 @ 10", as nice nostalgic blast from one great.

At 11:30 am I then switch over to 107.7 The Bone (KSAN) to catch Steven Seaweed's show, which also includes the "World Famous Hot Lunch" starting at 12 noon.

Starting on Opening Day (Monday, April 6th) of the MLB season, at 10:00 am I'll replace "10 @ 10" with the Radnich/ Bruno segment of the Gary Radnich Show on KNBR 680 am, where I will be returning for my 13th season as a contributor to his program.

And there you have it, my morning radio listening habits.

Now those aren't written in stone, as sometimes when I'm in the mood for something different while driving in to work I'll put on KDFC for my classical fix, KCSM for my jazz fix, or KCBS am for a traffic update.

And by the way if you hear of an accident or back up being called in by "Ulysses, of the KCBS Fone Force", that just me using another of my radio caller handles, lol.

And speaking of my various caller handles, it's time for me to make my Hot Lunch request, as Mick Flaire, on "107.7, the Bone"!

Cheers,

BB in B
