"Real" rock stations chase males 18-34. DVE is #1 25-54 overall in the market. Most of their listeners are over 30 if not over 40. Tons of women listen to DVE.
They are incredibly successful because they understand their audience and stay true to them.
K-Rock was a corporate cram-down that was doomed from the word go.
The hole in the market is new rock. The X is somewhat conservative as far as that goes (I rarely listen to them, but when I do I usually hear several-years old alternative song that I recognize). The 18-34s would appear o be the most available demo.
If you want to attack DVE's upper demos, you'd have to go classic rock and maybe flavor it along the lines of a AAA (adult album alternative) format or a rock AC. The last time something like that had any real measure of success was when Y97 brought Jimmy and Steve back from Florida. That was over 20 years ago.
I think the only signal that would potentially be available for such an experiment would be WLTJ at this point, and Steel City already had 97 Rock, so don't hold your breath.
