What should Fisher do with KVI?

Quite the little quandary we have here. Why don't we look at this through the lens of making money for corporate. Revenue is what I'm talking about. You walk into a car dealership or furniture store....with your shoes shined, 3 piece suit, starched white shirt, red tie, and leather briefcase. 54 radio signals in the market. You represent KVI-AM. What format do you want? Will you get laughed out of the store?

Think people think! What national format is underserved here in town but popular?

Well folks, I have a guaranteed revenue-producing ultra low-cost radio format. But I'm not revealing it to anyone.

Thanks for the sharp stick in the eye Bill! Music on am is DOA. You must have a talk format in mind?
The only reason I brought up the Spanish/Tex-mex/Salsa music, or Hispanic talk is because of the synergy (i dislike the word too) with KUNS. TV is still best way to create radio market change. I agree aspanish music format would be best on FM, which I've heard on a low powered FM. To be honest, I'd tune in more than I do now to hear Salsa on KVI.
Just don't see more time with the current format making a difference. As I posted before, say KVI to most people who've heard of it, and most will say it's right wing talk. At least if you returned to that format, you'd be in line with the perception.
Something different? SEX TALK 24 hours a day! You could have hookers corner. Pimps on parade. Between the sheets. Time to get up...Think of all the Viagra and other products you could sell! Ha ha!

I clearly remember the day (morning actually) Bob Hardwick died. I told Brian Jennings the news (got a phone call from someone) and he just flipped out.

@Dunno, You know, that's not a bad idea! That quack Dr. Jerry ("I Die My Hair Red") Mixon could buy up a ton of time on the station. And think of all the Male Enhancement infomercials you could run! Then you could have live programming, "Desperate & Dateless" (perfect for this town!); doesn't Dan Savage still have a sat show? You could simulcast that. The uproar over this kind of programming would be priceless advertising!! Even sprinkle in some great songs! "Push, Push, In The Bush," etc, etc....Discuss....

Having just heard Savage not to long ago, he would be quite controversial, and would probably have to be sensored quite a lot, he doesn't hold back the swear words. Speaking of, did anyone see the report on him at the high school journalism convention? I just looked at my convention guide (yes, I was there) and there apparently was a writeoff contest at 1:30, but I thought they walked out later? Hmm.

Corp,

Lol. Patrice Rushen would be perfect! How about 2 live crew's, Hey we Want some ####. Salt n Peppa, Push it, Donna Summer: Bad Girls, Love to love you baby, Jungle Fever and the list goes on and on!

Dan Savage would be perfect. You'd have all kinds of groups circling Fisher Plaza right now! Dr Drew used to have a show along these lines? Maybe all night you could run edited porn audio. I'm dying here! This has to be the format Boss Bill's thinking of!

How about changing the call letters to KKMO? The Kokomo station! They play Kokomo all day, everyday, 365 days a year. That way, those who want to hear that dreadful late 80s record can tune in to 570 whenever they want to hear it and the other stations don't have to.

Agreed, Kokomo is a terrible song. But as they say, "it tests well".

I'm remembering a local Seattle equivalent to Dr. Laura, on in the early 80's. Can't remember her name. But I believe she was on KVI and perhaps other stations. Anyone? A UW professor, too?

Pepper Swartz ?
Jennifer James ?

Both were in the sociology/self-help arena, though heavily used as interview subjects and don't remember if either hosted. Jennifer, by the way, is Mike James' sister.

Yes, LBB, Jennifer James is who I was thinking of. She definitely had her own show, I think on KVI, in the early 80's. And if I'm not mistaken, had a Q&A column in The Times.

GET READY SEATTLE.....THIS.....IS.....IT!......LIVE!......IT'S DR. JENNIFER JAMES WITH SPECIAL GUEST, PEPPER SCHWARTZ!!

THE ULTIMATE MENTAL MELTDOWN COMES TO CONFERENCE ROOM A OF THE WASHINGTON CONVENTION AND TRADE CENTER!!

FEEL THE TUBE LIGHTING!!

"KKMO"....I'm dying here! LOL!

"That was, of course, 'Kokomo' by The Beach Boys! And up next after traffic and weather...yep, you guessed it, more 'Kokomo'!"

I know there were some all-Beatles stations and maybe an all-Elvis station. Could KVI be another of those but with a different artist? "Nirvana-Rama?" (You could mix in some Hole and Foo Fighters...maybe).

AC-DC?

Oh, wait...Re-run TALKNET!!!!! YES!!!

Okay here's my two cents from an advertisers perspective. KOMO AM is solid property and adding the FM gained it some additional listeners. Now, if I'm an advertiser that wants to reach this type of audience, I buy KOMO and then go looking for more elsewhere. But what if KVI and KOMO BOTH offered news and talk in the same way that CNN, Headline News, MSNBC and FOX News offer different options and slants on what is a 'news/talk' product (when I buy cable I don't just buy one of the news channels, I buy several as a block). For example take KOMO to a 24 hours news operation and move the longer form in depth analysis (the rest of the story) with Carlson and Schram over to KVI? Or go the other way- more in depth on KOMO but then turn KVI into the 'headline news' channel (sure add some business reports, sports and traffic stuff) the 'give us 20 minutes we'll give you the world' idea? If could still do some girl power stuff at night to flank Tesh and counter program against mariners and sports on the other guys.

Point is, you FLANK your core channel, use same resources but mix it up and put it over two channels. Then you sell it as a combo- bigger audience overall. I would think it could be pretty powerful formula?

Ed...have been advocating that idea for years!! Therefore, given my track record, Fisher will not listen to (or adopt) that idea until 2018. For now it's a waiting game.....

Yep, agree w/you Steenman about flanking my own stations. Sandusky made that work for years with KLSY and KRWM. But who would you be protecting KOMO from?
Looks like KIRO doesn't have the need to go after KOMO and certainly no one else has the $$$ to fight the All News battle.

Ethnic blocks, we have plenty with Sandusky 1150 and Multicultural's AM 1540.

KVI could go after KIXI which is now on life support (no senior citizen jokes please!). Not too many years ago with Bob Brooks as PD KIXI pulled 2 plus shares with it's locally hosted line-up of Jim, and Jim, Jack Morton, etc. Bet KVI with its bigger signal could pull consistent 2 shares 6+ and would work as a value added to KOMO or Star sales team. Just sayin' !

I'm not advocating this to have them protect themselves..... I'm suggesting that it potentially gives them a larger audience to sell to advertisers as a 'cluster' sell. I'd buy it :)

If you're going to counter-program Tesh at night, at least syndicate his full show! Why do they start it 10 minutes late then cut out the first story of each hour? I should hear the legal id at top of the hour right into John Tesh, as most stations do. They should adopt a similar model to what KBBY in Ventura does, start it on time, then run a modified schedule.
