What we need...

I don't know exactly what the format is called, but I think one of these new rimshot stations or 106.3 when it changes hands would do well with a format like Philadelphia's 106.1... the station that WNCI's Chris Davis went to. Everytime i go to their website, the playlist looks really mixed up. We have nothing like it. Any thoughts?

I realize its an old topic, but I am just seeing it.
Philly's My 106.1 and Canton's My 101.7 arent even close. The only thing they share is the name. Philly's is a dance intensive Rhy. AC (think Movin, but they skew older, more disco), and Canton's WHOF is a straight-ahead AC.

Here's the thing,
If 98.9 and 106.3 are bought by the same people, they probably woudldn't want to have the two competing against each other. As far as the new 106.7 station, anything even possibly resembling WNCI's playlist/what they played 15 years ago/etc won't even be mentioned.

Listed here are the last 10 songs played as of this post on My106.1 I don't think this is competition to NCI, 989, or 1075... it's a total mix of stuff... white, black, old, new... Basically what 97.1 SHOULD be.

Bad Day
Daniel Powter

It's Raining Men
Weather Girls

Killing Me Softly

Re NCI's fear of competition from a format like that:  Clear Channel  is very paranoid about ovelap between their stations musically or demographically  (except in the case of WYTS where the objective is a bit different.)  "Very" paranoid is actually a marked improvement over a year or two ago, when they were *pathologically* paranoid about overlap.  But it's still bad new for Columbus listeners.  This is by no means a national CC issue.  It's specifically the Columbus management that's dogged by this strategically shallow and flawed mindset.

When you have the luxury of owning almost half the really good FM signals in an under-radioed market, you can make a lot of dumb decisions (admittedly in addition to some good ones), and fall well short of your true potential, but still look like heros to Corporate.

All that aside, I'm not sure how well that format would do here, even though I do like it personally,

what columbus needs is 2 more class b's
that is what is needed.
with a couple of dx holes....
what we don't need is npr radio on a lpfm....102.1 is a joke and to have it translated on 98.3
what a farce.....

Yes!  But not if owned by CC, given their history of using new "prize" signals for "me-too," directly competitve programming that does little to expand market choices (read, WLZT).  Doind this, isntead of investigating viable format-expansive opportunities,  is particularly irresponsible in a market that's so under-radioed big-signal-wise.

I like how you think, No Roo 2!
Question: Do you think that Goodradio.tv will enter Columbus with Radio One wanting to sell and Wilks at some time giving up their stations?

Glad you agree. As for Goodradio.tv coming in, your guess is as good as mine. Columbus would be a lot bigger than any of the other markets they've announced. I know they say that their goal is to acquire in small and medium markets. If they're true to that goal I guess it partly depends on whether they consider market #37 "medium."

Wouldn't everyone agree that Goodradio will have their hands full taking on all of these small to medium size stations...I would doubt that Columbus is one of their target markets. That said and considering the stations they did buy...you'd have to think they will be out shopping for other stations to fill in the gaps...just look at the Marion stations GoodRadio purchased...those stations will not make an impact in either Columbus or Mansfield...Speaking of this region...anyone heard anything about CC's Mansfield/Ashland clusters...word on the street was Saga...but no announcement yet...that would suggest a problem of somekind...
