WHATEVER HAPPENED TO REAL DJS?

I mean jocks who fit the mold when you hear the term "DJ"? I saw a DRC-FM youtube linked on the Connecticut board. Here's an example of what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nj76CnwK3lE
Maybe it's a dated sound and I don't know if anyone else at DRC-FM has the same kind of style but it's an example of the excitement radio used to put out and it's gone from Providence. B101 is probably the one station that has a golden opportunity to do this kind of radio and they've let it slip by. Even PRO-FM as a CHR could bring that format back to its golden age with a little more hype but when I hear them they're nothing more than a mouthpiece for station promotions and celebrity jabber. Where's the excitement? Where are the jocks, the REAL jocks? Are audiences turned off by this kind of radio? Do they really want these monotone voices piped in by Clear Channel or do they want to be jump started? Would it be asking too much to stop putting so many stiffs on the air and brings things back to the way they were? Does anyone under 40 or 50 even appreciate this kind of radio? No wonder it's all going to hell in a handbasket.

I would love to hear radio like that! I think a lot of people would. But unfortunately the people in charge are brain dead.

Those were the days for sure. The good ones have gotten to a place where they are working to save radio; they are not jocks anymore, but businessmen and business women who have gone to something better for themselves. The one we saw in the video clip is keeping it alive, but doesn't have the really good, old equipment they had back in the day. Modern technology has its definite limitations.

You see the dj would have to actually be live in the studio to do this so that rules out Providence, the market of primarily empty studios.

They went out of style like DA hairdos and poodle skirts... but like bell bottom jeans and French twists, they too could come back to be "discovered" by the newest generations to embrace... or not. Time marches on.

Do you want to give the average Providence jock a stroke by requiring this kind of energy?
That is the problem with radio today. I remember when the average providence jock was like that especially on PRO-FM.

Its sad but radio will never sound like that agian. Believe it or not Gio can do it, that old fart LOL. A few months back they were talking about what radio used to sound like and he did a demo of it talking in a song LOL.

Ah the good old days. Only way your going to hear that now and in the future is to do it yourself at home and put it on your ipod/zune

Don't forget the frosting on this piece of "nostalga cake". Having that high-energy DJ doing his thing on an AM station, and being able to listen to it on a warm, rich-sounding vacuum tube radio.

There...now THAT completes the picture...

What happened? Glad you asked!

Those high energy guys put down their bongs, and kvetched once too often about working holidays, or weekends and the manager finally called the satellite automation folks who were bugging him weekly, and the station got one of those new fangled computers.

They boss then put the radio station in the closet and hired a few new sexy salepeople who work on straight commission.

Then the manager took all those high energy salaries and benefits and had a VERY in-the-black quarter.

The past is a great place to visit but...stick a retro 70s screamer on a CHR today the kids would roll their eyes and reach for the iPod

Yeah.. but automation will never be a substitute for a REAL personality. Automation is fine for music. Most of the people looking for music want the DJ to shut the hell up anyway. But just try to automate Howard Stern or any other personality driven program. It can't be done. This is why talk shows will thrive and continue to live on. However if you are a DJ and your main purpose on air is to play music....... let's just say that you better have a back up plan. Your final days on the air are already here.

60s, 70s, 80,s 90s, now. Let's face it the audience has always wanted the dj to shut up. There's only a small percentage of listeners who don't outside of mornings.

I tend to think that the only people who like to listen to music DJ's yap are the people who work in Radio. Most of the people I know who have never been near a radio station always seem to switch the station as soon as the music ends.

Unless you are actually learning something about the music from the jock, and not a bunch of inane tripe from an inane person who needs to use the airspace for some long setup because you would never think of whatever the topic if you just heard the song.

LOL... very true. Makes you realize that most jocks don't teach us a damn thing and 99 percent of them are not amusing either. Well they think they are.. but we know different. It reminds me of the unfunny kid who actually thinks he's hilarious because his friends and family politely laugh at all their lame jokes. I think it's these same kids that decide to go into radio. ;D

Seriously though... how many people in radio are truly talented and offer something? ANYTHING? Casey Kasem was one. He talked about the music and you would learn something each and every program. He's the perfect example of what a jock should be. These days jocks barely talk about the music. They are busy reading from TMZ instead. That's their show now. Celebrity gossip. When I was growing up that is what we watched Entertainment Tonight for. One half hour a day was plenty.

Poor radio. Where is the crying emoticon. It may be the only time I ever use it. :'(

That is all very true but finish the story... As a result all of the over the air radio got stale and bland with all the cookie cutter, spoon fed, out of market crap and listeners like me started turning to out ipods and zunes. Ad sales dropped and revenue dropped and now the lions share of the station owners..being Citidel and CC are in BANKRUPTCY.

Isn't it ironic that radio stations made plenty of Money in the 60's, 70's and 80's when EVERY SHOW was LOCAL. But once they started firing the local guys... radio began to lose money. Anyone else find that connection strange?

I don't blame it on technology either. If I had to choose between a great radio show or just turning on my ipod, I will always tune in the great radio show. My reasoning for this is: Every radio show is slightly different. I don't want to miss something good that I may not hear again. However my ipod is always going to be there for me after the great radio show. Therefore the choice is an easy one.

Bottom line: Good local radio makes money. Bad spoon fed cookie cutter radio loses listeners and loses Money.
