WHATEVER HAPPENED TO REAL DJS?

Isn't it ironic that radio stations made plenty of Money in the 60's, 70's and 80's when EVERY SHOW was LOCAL. But once they started firing the local guys... radio began to lose money. Anyone else find that connection strange?

Anyone else notice that this also coincided with the rise of the internet, the general ubiquity of cellphones, portable music players that anyone could program? It's easy to be #1 when you're the only game in town.

That explanation is a ridiculous oversimplification. There are two primary reasons for the pathetic state of radio today, and they are:
1. The awful economy is killing advertising revenues
2. The costs of consolidtion (especially interest payments on debt) from the few gigantic radio conglomerates (especially Clear Channel and Citadel).

Two examples of ownership groups that have been smarter in terms of managing debt, are still largely live and local in most markets, and are doing better financially than the aforementioned Goliaths:
1. Lincoln Financial
2. Hall Communications
