Yeah, I'd have to agree. I spent a lot of time in the Tyler-Longview area. And, my Dad lived in the Midland-Odessa area for a few years. It is depressing out there. The smell of the sulphur mills out there, the dust storms, no trees... I found it to be very ugly personally... no offense to anyone who lives out there, it's just not my cup of tea. Tyler-Longview is not the best place to live, but it's far from being the worst. Tyler/Smith County is DRY, so be prepared to get a membership and pay outrageous cover charges at the few clubs within the city limits, if you choose to go that route. Gregg County (where Longview is) is WET, but it depends on where you are in Longview as to whether you can drink or not. At least the stores sell beer and wine there, and there are liquor stores. However, besides the casinos being an hour away in Shreveport, there's not much to do in Longview. Tyler has a lot going on, not involving the nightlife. I always said if I had kids, it would be the place I would want to raise a family.
I think you'd have a better shot here in Tyler at landing a gig, especially after the Clear Channel stations are sold. As everyone else pointed out, if you get here and don't like it, there are many other markets around... DFW, Shreveport, Texarkana, Lufkin-Nac, Houston. So, you won't get 'stuck' here. In Midland-Odessa, you're only escape is really San Angelo.
Good luck!
