What's happened Darby Douglas???

Although Darby was doing traffic on KHOU TV, for those of you who don't know he was actually a metro traffic employee. He hasn't been on in weeks, with Mary Kennedy from metro filling in for him, then last week, there's another attractive woman doing morning trafficon KHOU. Anyone know what happened to Darby? did metro show him the door? Just curious, as I ave been out of touch for weeks as I've been training for a new career and leaving radio...

He's been replaced. Low talk around town has it that KHOU wanted a female, and someone younger.

If that's not proof of gender and age bias I don't know what is.

It's a shame - and, of course, since Darby was employed by Metro and wasn't an official employee of KHOU, they can have the talent they want...it's no different than when I was doing traffic on-air for one of the AM stations (which shall remain anonymous) when I was told that they didn't like my sound - like, what the hell is that all about - my other stations had no problem with how I sounded....

When my wife and I moved back to Houston last year, my brother-in-law, who is a MAP Deputy, told me that I needed to get to know DD because he was the man when it came to traffic and such - what a waste and a shame that he isn't on the air any longer...

Sad but true, but in television, it seems to be the nature of the beast. How many older guys do you see at anchor desks with a succession of young hotties co-anchoring beside them? Unfortunately, the Jane Pauleys of the world get replaced by the Debora Norvilles all the time. Television facetime has an expiration date for women, and it's sad to see the same is true for men nowadays. I thought, somehow, we'd move in the opposite direction as time went on, rewarding experience and talent and recognizing long contribution. What was I thinking?

I don't know and am not knocking anybody else who does the job in Darby's stead. I'm just sad that he's gone, and hope he lands well.

bad move. darbys brand is a staple on 11 and his rep as the traffic guy is unmatched. thats a waste of market clout.

so far none of the chicks are worth a dump.

Ah, radiopropd, I guess you felt like I did when KRBE told "the mgmt" that they didn't like my sound for their tfx reports. oh how I laugh at that now...

I watched Claire Nevarez when she was in Phoenix and she's good - I mean she doesn't have the status/name recognition that Darby had/has but she's your basic morning traffic girl...

I think Vicente Arenas needs to get out of mornings but that's another story. :)

I got a note from Darby a week or so ago that said the station wanted with more curves than he had... if you know Darby, you know he didn't say it that way... I cleaned it up quite a bit..but you get the drift.

Youre right Joe- that's exactly how I felt - especially since the asst op's director told me she didn't know why I wasn't doing their traffic reports - I had to go to the op's manager and finally got the truth - that's one of the things I have hated about radio - hell, why can't somebody just be upfront? I have never had a problem with someone not liking my sound, as there are many other's who have enjoyed what I've done, and I realize that it's a preference kind of thing - again, I can accept that, but what I can't accept is the lying, or rather, the not being honest or upfront...nonetheless, I am moving on with my new career - although I would much rather being doing radio, and I truly miss it, at least I don't have to worry too much about being laid off or losing my job, or not knowing one day to the next if I still have a gig...

As for Darby, KevinC is right, he wouldn't say it that way - I can just see Darby saying that they wanted more above the waist, so to speak - and that's what they got - what they didn't get is someone who has been part of this markey for may years and had/had enormous name recognition. Hopefully Darby will show up on on of the other stations doing traffic, although hopefully not through metro - I know that channel 13 used to use the metro service, but I am not certain if that is still the case...hopefully he doesn't have a long non-compete.

Looks like the powers that be at KHOU have been watching the trends with Ch 2 gaining larger am audiences with their morning traffic babe (former bikini contest champion). Seems like more media companies are going for the "Fox Model" (pun intended) of the parade of hot, sexy anchorettes. It's all about the ratings. Unfortunately, good, hard working GUYS like Darby get shoved to the side. Tough business if you want to play in it.

I've worked with Darby and he is a great man. With that being said... why shouldn't men be held to the same beauty standards as women? Women in radio and tv have to be under a certain age and under a certain weight. Plus, long hair and a lot of makeup is preferred. How many fat or old women do you see on tv? How many in radio? There was a time when my weight topped 250 so I know what I'm talking about. I spent many years on overnights. A couple places even left me off their websites. I've worked with tons of old men, bald men and men that look like they are six months pregnant. That seems to be okay. I for one can't wait for the day all the men on tv and in radio look like Erik Barajas!!!!

for the same reason women arent held to the same strength standards as men. were different creatures with different appealing attributes. like it or not people want to see attractice women on tv, and nobody cares what the guys look like.

fmtooner,

Do you think you could give me the names of the people that want to see attractive women on tv, but not attractive men? I'm willing to bet they are men!! The old farts in radio are pretty predictable so I knew someone would mention Deborah Wrigley. She and Erik Barajas are two of the reasons I watch channel 13. He is HOT and she is pretty much the only woman over 55 and so smart. Plus, they both do a great job. Also, Dave Ward pretty much cancels her out. Attractiveness is subjective. I would love it if the world somehow ran out of makeup. Most women would not come out of the house. I would be skipping down the street!!!! Now,fmtooner, if you would excuse me, I have to embark on my daily 2 hour walk. I have to stay in shape since my only value as a woman, is based on what I look like, according to you.

as for the women, me. and i didnt say people didnt want to see attractive men. i said people dont care

I'm willing to bet they are men!! The old farts in radio are pretty predictable so I knew someone would mention Deborah Wrigley.

so you are assuming i am a man and old?

She and Erik Barajas are two of the reasons I watch channel 13. He is HOT and she is pretty much the only woman over 55 and so smart.

you sound like the guys you dis. thinking the tv person of the opposite sex needs to be hot, while thinking the tv person of the same sex needs to be smart - and old is even ok.

dont feel bad. that pretty much sums up guy viewers too.

lets not throw accusations around. i didnt say the only value of women is their looks. i merely said that people - guys and ladies alike - for the most part (and without respect to their skills) like to see pretty female news ladies and dont really care what the guys look like. its the same way in life in general. guys like attractive women, women like successful guys, good looking or not.

wait a minute, wait a minute here - i gotta get in on this one - it's all a double standard...and be grateful you guys aren't in New York!! For years, we've been blessed with Chuck Scarborough and Sue Simmons in one form or another...Sue is over 50, gorgeous, AND trustworthy - and has been slammed...and yet Chuck Scarborough, who's probably a few years older than Sue, has NEVER been slammed by ANYBODY for ANYTHING...my point - we just evaluate our male news anchors SO DIFFERENT than our female anchors...

as a female, i figure like this, as long as i feel comfortable with the anchors and the presentation - THAT'S what matters...(but we DO have some good-looking news and weather people in New York, so... :))

fmtooner,

I'm pretty certain you are an older man. It would help if you had the courage to use your real name, so we all could know who you are!!! I appreciate you responding to me, but please don't turn my words around and leave out cerain things I said to make yourself look better. After the sentence about how Erik is hot and Deborah is 55 and smart, I made a comment about how they both do a good job. Of course, you didn't mention that. Also, in your first sentence you made reference to how men and women are different creatures and have different attributes. In the context it was written, it came across to me, that you pretty much think that our main attribute is how we look. I posted to point out that there is an extreme double standard, especially in the south, with regards to the way men and women look. Andrea got that, but you didn't!!!

I'm not going to talk about how women like a certain kind of man, because that has to do with dating, not radio or tv!!!!

ANDREA...THANKS FOR POSTING. I lived up there until I was seven and would go back every summer and for the holidays. New York men are the best looking, especially the firefighters..OMG!!! If you know any, please send them down...lol!!!!

a LOT of our bus drivers here are pretty hot as well... :)

but more importantly, i'm SO GLAD you get that i get it :) - there is an EXTREME double standard with regard to the way we expect our male and female anchors to look, sound, and act...

Andrea

I don't wanna get caught up in the discussion too much and have anyone start accusing me of things.. but I will note that while fmtooner didn't use his real name..neither does slickchick...at least not where I can see....

By the way... I was upset for Darby losing his gig more because he's a friend and i hated to see it happening to him... not so much for the reason it happened. I hardly ever watched his reports because TV traffic made little sense to me since I don't watch tv in my car when I am on the road... I guess it works for those who plan ahead and have the TV on before they leave the house.

Thats all.

Oh yes one more thing.. If Jan Carson, Shara Fryer, or Jan Glenn were doing the TV news again it would be fine with me.
