What's happened to Luca at Rock 103?

I'm a native Memphian living in Nashville and listen to several of the Memphis stations on the Internet. I've noticed that Luca at Rock 103 was there one day and mysteriously gone the next. Can anyone elaborate?

Oddly enough I heard on Drake & Zeke's show that she had been let go by the fine folks at Clear Channel. So that means they have what .... Ric, Bad Dog - ah Spencer and Brother Doug.

My how the mighty have fallen.

Apparently if you are a talented female on Crock 103, you better watch out because your stay will be a short one.

It's all part of a well orchestrated plan to improve the overall quality of the product. Insiders tell me that afternoons will be V/T'd and it's a step that will make 103 a bertter radio station.

For the longest time, Rock 103 was the standard for good radio ANYWHERE. From the time after the Z103 fiasco to around the early part of this new century, the station was IT a lot of people.

You had great personalities in all day-parts - heck I remember when it was just Drake Hall in the afternoon, and Zeke Logan would just drop in before his shift at nights. You had the best people in the morning, Tim, Bev and Bad-Dog with many different producers - most remembered were Jarman and JoyChristie. Kellie Cruise then Jennifer Reed in mid-days - I may not have personally liked her, but she did a helluva job - then after Zeke Logan Joined Drake in the PM drive I think that's when Brian Jay joined up then Jaman's proverbial stint in the evenings - and we can't forget Wes Yahola in the overnights, is it just me or did he once go by Wes Young? Can't remember??

That was a great line up - that was a great sounding station.

Then, Clear Channel started to tinker with everything.

If you haven't read "Right Of The Dial - The Rise of Clear Channel and the Fall of Commerical Radio" by Alec Foege, then anyone who's worked for that company should. You'll see just what vampires they were to the industry.

But I digress.

Rock 103 is dead - please pull the plug.

Let those of us who remember it as a great station, mourn it for was it was - not the shallow shell it has become.

So...you think 98.1 will attempt to take credit for the demise of 103?
Do you think they contributed to it? How much?
If it gets flipped...to what should it get flipped?
???

I did love 103 back in the day. Remember when Rev. Billy C. Wertz would come by every so often?
They even had HIM constantly crackin' Frayser jokes when he was in town.

Are they CC stockholders?

I don't live in Memphis anymore, but for years I was a regular Rock 103 listener, both before and after the Z103 chapter. I still listen to it when I'm in town, and while it's not the Rock 103 it used to be, it's still a lot better than a lot of other classic rock stations. Our classic rock station in Knoxville, WIMZ 103.5, is sickening. Same old songs over and over, now it's mostly hair bands, and you can't get thru an hour without hearing Aerosmith, 80's ZZ Top, AC/DC. I honestly don't know how the DJ's who work there can stand it. I finally got so tired of it I just deleted it from the push buttons on the radio. We do have a fairly decent 60/70's top 40 oldies station (Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel) and while it does have some repetition (I really don't need to hear Hanky Panky more than once a week), it's the best thing we have going here. Heck, I have even started listening to the "Music of Your Life" AM station to hear something different and likeable.

Why can't someone program a rock radio station that is like FM100 in its progressive rock days or Rock 103 particularly after the Z103 era? Both played a nice selection of older stuff, while giving the new stuff plenty of air time as well. You just don't get to hear things like the nice medley of songs from Abbey Road, or hardly anything from the Moody Blues on current classic rock. I've heard "Money" by Pink Floyd until I am sick of the song, but where is "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" or "One of These Days"? By the same token, Tom Petty's last couple of albums and the Eagles last album both went unheard on the commercial radio airwaves in Knoxville, and I suspect the same thing is true in Memphis.

Someone give that man a cupie doll..... I've heard more folks griping "why doesn't Spencer play *fill in the blank* instead of Led Zepplin all day?" and I politely remind them all pertinent information regarding listeners such as sex, age, education, financial status, does he/she do goats and what's his/her MySpace name has been key into the computers in San Antonio and they are waiting for the computer to generate the perfect play list for Tuesday, May 26th, 2011 so you be ready at 1:43 pm for that Uriah Heep you requested last night.... they wouldn't want you to miss your song.

As corny as it was sometimes, I dearly loved The Pig. Where else could you get Johnny Cash, Govt. Mule, Jimi Hendrix, Bonnie Raitt, Talking Heads, Lucinda Williams, Jimi Hendrix and more on one station? *sigh*

The main problem with "The Pig" is that it had tons of loyal 'listener' - but no raitings. Yeah the signal wasn't what it could have been - but look at what Q1075 has done with it.

While we could prove to advertisers that we had the listeners at numerous concerts, events and all - it was the lack of raitings that proved fatal. Doc did lots of marketing for the Pig - heck I think there's still some "Pig" stuff out back in the stoarge areas.

That was another station that had a good line up of personalities, music and just enough camp to not take itself seriously.

I never got to hear much of The Pig but I have several friends in Memphis who loved it. With the other stations, particularly Rock 103, seemingly going down the drain, would it now work to bring The Pig out of retirement?

I was a fan of Dr Flinn's AM 1210 WGSF when they were playing oldies with the likes of Tom Gurley, Beth Waller, Sonny Dennis and others whose names escape me at the moment. Heck, they even did AM stereo for a while. Talk about an oldies station with variety! Where else were you going to hear "Nobody's Fool" by Dan Penn on the radio in Memphis?

General note to anyone with a floundering AM station in Memphis... Let me goof with it. No one listens to it anyway, and you won't miss it. No one cares about AM anymore... it's just wasting electricity... let me waste it for you! I can waste it better!

EXACTLY!!...... I quit listening to 103 over a year ago.... Its just not the same.. I don't like The Max any better.....

XM all the way now days since they killed decent radio

I haven't listened to Rock 103 since D&Z were there. When they left, I quit listening. When I got my iPod back in December 05, it started to provide all my music enjoyment for me. I listen to 98.1 when D&Z are on, and 98.9 during the day sometimes, and of course, Baisden on RBO.

98.1's playlist has become as repetitious as 103's so they are equally as bad. I used to love to hear 103's electric lunch back in the day and they played a lot of hard rock old Judas Priest, Alice Cooper, etc at night. Personally I like the hair bands and would like to hear more of them on 103 and a deep cut of artists. What would classic rock do if they want a whole 24 hours without playing any Led Zep, ZZ Top, Pink Floyd, and Aerosmith.

Probably add more Bad Company and Van Halen.
