What's Happening in Gainesville? MARC Radio?

I'm still digesting all the MARC Radio stuff and thanks to each of you who've contributed. To digress slightly, I'm curious about WRGO referenced here by Nostalgia. I guess that was sold separately. Is "Mr. Pope" local? I tried tuning 102.7 but can only catch a whiff of a distant signal. Did they change freq's? What's happening with them?

Richard Pope is an auto dealer in upstate New York and is acquainted with James Morrell (CEO of Pamal Broadcasting). Dick Pope acquired WRGO-FM Cedar Key and WYNY-AM Cross City (Now WZCC) from Pamal in a separate deal several years ago. Pope later sold WYNY as WZCC in a separate deal to Nostalgia.

WRGO is still operating on 102.7 C3 with 12.5kw at 492 Feet HAAT with its tower location about 9-miles East of Cedar Key Island just off Levy County Highway 24. Its signal is rather scratchy in Gainesville and Ocala.

Glad WRGO is still operating, but what's the format?? Does Mr. Pope believe in live people or is it all satellite something. Where is the studio and/or office where the salespeople hang out? I'm guessing he comes to Florida periodically, probably in the winter where a vacation in Cedar Key would be a nice tax write-off for a frozen New Yorker.

WRGO's format is classic hits, having morphed over from oldies which is the original format. The studios are located in Crystal River in a small shopping/office strip on highway 19 North near the Ford-Lincoln dealership. As for sales people, at last count, Pope had a GM from his Savannah station who drives down to Crystal River once a week to sell and oversee the station. I believe WRGO may have one other local salesperson. Programming is operated locally from a computer hard-drive. Aside from that, WRGO is essentially on auto-pilot 24/7.

I've just learned that to post on this site, I MUST check the box "Remember Me" BEFORE imputing my user name & PW. IDK if anyone else has that problem, but it was plaguing me for a day or so.

Anyway, I guess I need that IT guy to guide me. Come to think of it, an interior decorator would be handy too.

As for area radio, I'm gonna stop asking questions for a day or so. The answers seem to get worse, from Shadow Gov't to Autopilot. Yikes! I'm glad I'm cross trained in retail.

From cflradio.net

Cobb Joins Marc Radio 9-24-15: Dave Cobb will take over as General Manager of Marc Radio's seven Central Florida stations. Dave will oversee operations at; WPLL-FM 106.9, WTMG-FM 101.3, WHHZ-FM 100.5, WRZN-AM 720, WWLO-AM 1430, WTMN-AM 1430 and WDVH-FM 101.7.

Let's hope the "shadow government" is put on hold and he is allowed to get something done. I checked him on Google and he worked for Pamal in Pensacola when they owned the two big FMs up there.

Is this a return to the future? Without knowing the individual(s), I can say that I've seen more than once owners desperate to change things resort to recirculating salespeople and management based on where they've worked and so-called records of success. Of course, it's always an "increase of 57%, yada yada yada."

In the span of a year a half, my last owner (out of state) met a Clear Channel "guru" at NAB, who convinced him he could run this stations from 200 miles away. Right. Then, to recover more lost ground, (5 months) he brought in a retread cheerleader from an adjacent market, who must have read every motivational book on the market. Sadly, no innovation and no substance. We lost the prime selling season on that one, along with 2 of 3 air staff (including me) and a couple of salespeople in short order.

I too wish luck and success to anyone who's tackling the mammoth tasks as outlined by the contributors to this thread. I read an article a couple of years back that claimed someone submitted Warren Buffett's resume (under an assumed name of course) to a couple dozen companies (or so) for an executive position. Seems that the majority of HR people didn't think it necessary to even reply to someone wanting to work for their company. (Aside from lacking class, that's just plain RUDE!) Of the few who did, it was determined by those HR Gods that (Warren) wasn't in the running to run a company!!! Or, maybe--those qualifications proved intimidating and too threatening to those doing the screening. When did hiring for critical positions go the way of computer dating? I can remember working for a couple department stores and a couple of radio stations where, after MEETING with the department supervisors, a final interview was with the store manager, GM and (twice) OWNER. What a concept, huh.

Reminds me of the definition of insanity, but I'll rework it a bit for my purposes here. INSANITY--doing the same thing (with the same recirculating type of people) and expecting a different result. I hope this doesn't apply to ANY stations in North Florida, but I'm guessing it's now the rule--not the exception.

Welcome to Wal-Mart. (Oops, we don't do that anymore. The real innovator passed away.)
