Is this a return to the future? Without knowing the individual(s), I can say that I've seen more than once owners desperate to change things resort to recirculating salespeople and management based on where they've worked and so-called records of success. Of course, it's always an "increase of 57%, yada yada yada."
In the span of a year a half, my last owner (out of state) met a Clear Channel "guru" at NAB, who convinced him he could run this stations from 200 miles away. Right. Then, to recover more lost ground, (5 months) he brought in a retread cheerleader from an adjacent market, who must have read every motivational book on the market. Sadly, no innovation and no substance. We lost the prime selling season on that one, along with 2 of 3 air staff (including me) and a couple of salespeople in short order.
I too wish luck and success to anyone who's tackling the mammoth tasks as outlined by the contributors to this thread. I read an article a couple of years back that claimed someone submitted Warren Buffett's resume (under an assumed name of course) to a couple dozen companies (or so) for an executive position. Seems that the majority of HR people didn't think it necessary to even reply to someone wanting to work for their company. (Aside from lacking class, that's just plain RUDE!) Of the few who did, it was determined by those HR Gods that (Warren) wasn't in the running to run a company!!! Or, maybe--those qualifications proved intimidating and too threatening to those doing the screening. When did hiring for critical positions go the way of computer dating? I can remember working for a couple department stores and a couple of radio stations where, after MEETING with the department supervisors, a final interview was with the store manager, GM and (twice) OWNER. What a concept, huh.
Reminds me of the definition of insanity, but I'll rework it a bit for my purposes here. INSANITY--doing the same thing (with the same recirculating type of people) and expecting a different result. I hope this doesn't apply to ANY stations in North Florida, but I'm guessing it's now the rule--not the exception.
Welcome to Wal-Mart. (Oops, we don't do that anymore. The real innovator passed away.)
