Gave up radio? I thought he was still doing the weather when he died in that freak accident. I can not remember if it was hang gliding, parachute or helicopter. I thought he was on the air until his abrupt death.

I thought of something I won. It may not have been the best or most expensive ever, but it gave me a lot of enjoyment. I won a WNBC Sweatshirt and 64 Dunkin Donuts from 66 WNBC and the designation of Record Pig on The Time Machine With Jay Sorensen. I won the same thing two different times and there was a Dunkin Donuts around the corner. I still wear the sweatshirt though this climate here does not accomodate it often. (It was 104 yesterday and 108 here on Sunday).<P ID="signature">______________

He was only on TV, no longer on radio.

Even Jay asked that question. Dunkin Donuts sold sixteen donuts in a pack, so that was four and I received four coupons for sixteen donuts, so I did not have to get 64 on one trip.

I did not complain. They could have given me a dozen and I would have been happy.

If I can remember the question...What label was the single of Hush by Deep Purple on? I think Jay said that it was the same label as the Two Virgins album by John Lennon.

Didn't you get fat? I worked in the Promotions department of KR-LA, and I must have had at one point, 200 coupons for the Shakey's "Bunch o' Lunch", 100 Jack in the Box Burritos, and 250 Laps to the Malibu Grand Prix

Eleven Ten...KRLA

I don't think so? I was there in 1977-1978, it was just KRLA, a non profit Station, with all funds going to the CPB. That's what happens when you run fake contests Doc. Then of course listened during the kRRRR-LA Days, always say that "R" like a Pirate would!

Hit Radio Eleven Ten KRLA....

In 1977 Art Laboe was P.D., and had a financial interest in the Station. Jack Roth (voice of Nissan) was the A.P.D., and Mike Horn, the sidekick to Art Laboe's V/T'd Morning show. Art even tracked the Weather from home, (the KRLA Weatherscope©). Johnny Hayes was doing 10A-2P live. The rest of the day Automated with live Engineer/Board Op's at the Transmitter. It was all very strange at the Sheraton Oak Knoll in Pasadena. For a Station that was run "NOT for profit", KRLA maintained a full-time AFTRA staff of 5 "Hitmen". Their sole purpose was to spot KRLA bumper stickers & signs, and give stuff away!

Johnny did middays LIVE? Man, I coulda sworn it was all voicetracked. Not to dis Johnny, whom I respect greatly, but if he was live, that was liner-card radio at its ultimate pinnacle.

...having said that, I listened ;) Mostly when I'd had enough of KFI's 1.75-hour A-Hit rotation. "Good God, not 'Heartache Tonight' AGAIN!"

While Johnny did his show live, all he had in front of him was a couple of buttons that cued the engineer at the Transmitter. This type of set up, along with liner cards o' plenty made KRLA sound canned during that time. On a pleasant note, this mutated thread has been mentioned by KM Richards over at the L.A. Board. He does some good work!

The Find Perry Allen Contest

Perry Allen and "The KRLA Mystery Man" or "Find Perry Allen" contest is probably one of the best stories in broadcast history. According to Perry, "I was doing the KB morning show...on a newsbreak I got a call from the front desk. The gal informed me there were two LA radio people wishing to see me on a promotional matter. I was stoked. "Imagine! I'm goin' with a station that's so top-of-the-line they send guys to Buffalo in order to whip up a promotion." I wind up enthusing all over these two guys - one of whom was Charlie Arlington, a KFWB newsman.

The other guy did sales for the Crowell-Collier Minneapolis station. They proceed to suggest I call Jack Kent Cooke at KRLA in order that I might inform him...he owes his competitor, KFWB ten-thousand-bucks. With wavering voice...I do so. Jack shouts back, "Do you have any idea how much ten thousand dollars is?" to which I respond, "If I did, I wouldn't be taking this job with you."

The promotion was called...deceptively enough..."The find Perry Allen Contest." Listeners were urged to walk up to any guy in L.A. and ask, "Are you Perry Allen, the newest member of the ever-lovin' eleven-ten men?" Theoretically, the winner would ask the question of me.

Of course, I was still in Buffalo, so winning was an impossibility. Between the time I'd taken the KRLA job and the time I exited KB, Chuck Blore had called me from KFWB with a job offer. Unhappily I couldn't accept because of my KRLA commitment. So, as soon as the "new rocker" came on the air...and he heard the "Find Perry Allen" promo...he had Cooke nailed.

Had Jack not battled so hard to keep his $10,000 in the matter, he could have reaped a windfall of international promotion and, probably, retained the license. But fight he did. Meanwhile the story had been picked up by...just about everybody...including The CBS Evening News...The Wall Street Journal...MacClean's in Canada.

I eased my way out of KRLA...threatening to tell the F.C.C. about a number of problems within the operation. For one thing...in their application they vowed to air 5 minutes of religion every hour (on a rocker!) and an hour agricultural show they swore I hosted every morning. Then there was a key to the new 50K transmitter...the one who found that was to reap a prize. The guy (PD Bill Wheatley) who wrote out the clues supposedly leading to the key's locale didn't know where the key had been stashed.

After due consideration...they released me from my contract. This, through sheer coincidence, allowed Wink Martindale and I to swap shows. Wink had been doing AMs on MOR KHJ. I was weary of a top 40 format."

It was the Perry Allen incident that ultimately lead to the revocation of KRLA's license.

But wasn't that the trigger that blew up the foreign ownership investigation, which is the legal cause for the revocation?
 
Wait, I thought that was RKO?

I remember we spoke about that a couple Years ago?. What was this intriguing story. Again, I was very young when I worked there, didn't know Perry Allen, or the entire reason the ownership was revoked. I just knew it was over a staged contest. I do remember the 'drawer' of $100 Bills they kept in the promotions department. A lot of money seemed to be flowing around KRLA, even though it was being run ‘not for profit’. They sure didn’t have a problem selling commercials!

best thing i ever won was a trip to DC as a kid in an essay contest....I had never been and my parents couldn't at the time afford such as trip....so it was very much a good thing for me and my family.....

ill never forget my wide open eyes during my trip....its why i still love DC and the surroundng area so very much.
