The RKO stations lost out (some sold, some revoked) due to the parent, General Tire, being convicted of having engage in bribery in Argentina, Libya and other places in violation of US law.

KRLA lost the license due to having a canadian who owned mor ethan the legal limit for foreigners at the time.

Weren't there also allegations that preferred ad rates were given on RKO's stations if you did business with General Tire?<P ID="signature">______________

Unethical Conduct, both at RKO & KRLA

Double Billing:
"The RKO radio & TV stations became some of the leading stations in the world, but the division was dragged down by unethical conduct at its television stations. This culminated in the longest licensing dispute in television history, eventually forcing RKO General out of the broadcasting business".


And years earlier at KRLA, there is no reason not to believe the Perry Allen story which forced KRLA to run 'not for profit' from 1964 to 1979. It was a combination of fraud, intrigue, foreign ownership & unbridled passion. "In 1964 License "pulled" and granted to Oak Knoll Broadcasting. This corporation was set up as a non-profit to hold the license when it was taken from Jack Kent Cooke for violations of the FCC Rules on contest fraud, and foreign control of a US radio station. Some of the most creative parts of KRLA history occurred during this time, both on the air and in the accounting department".

I was not familiar with this one. In general (pun intended) General Tire was an old-line business using old-boy practices, and they got trippped up over the bribe issue but it would not surprise me that their actions were suspect in other areas.
