OK, folks, get ready for some "Spin." 102.7 KJXK is now free of that pesky national Jack-FM format. Connoisseur can program "San Antonio's Bob 102.7" for itself. Hooray!
But that's not what this is about. Someone in corporate didn't want to keep paying for the Jack-FM rights. Let's just program it ourselves and stop paying those fees. The format plays almost nothing current. We'll just set up a playlist of about 400 songs ourselves! Mostly what Jack was already playing.
But what management is leaving out is the quips. If you don't have DJs and you don't want a soulless jukebox, you need Howard Cogan or the Geico voice guy to make snide remarks composed for him by a team of comedy writers in Los Angeles. That's why KJXK remains in San Antonio's top 10 for all these years while still playing the same Tom Petty, Red Hot Chili Peppers and U2 songs it's been playing since 2006.
Here's the statement from Connoisseur Media San Antonio VP Morgan Harrison: “102.7 Bob-FM keeps the adult hits format people enjoy, while giving us more room to spotlight San Antonio — its neighborhoods, its culture, and its sense of fun. We’re making radio that feels local, alive, and connected — the way it should be.”
OK, I'll buy anyone here dinner in July if you can cite for me somewhere that KJXK will spotlight San Antonio's neighborhoods, culture or sense of fun. Will a fulltime "spotlighter" of neighborhoods or culture be hired? Who will supply the "sense of fun"? It's an automated radio station.
