What's up with 91.5?

People have been posting (mostly positively) about 91.5's freshening its music recently.  Well today, they've been mixing in tons of soft and mainstream AC from the 70's and 80's.  In the past they've periodically become mired in limited periods of 70's soft AC.  But today has gone way beyond that.  At times they sound like 93.3 (blech).  But at other times they still sound great.  So, I'm thinking, "OK, fine, this is the price of variety."  A lot of the softer stuff sounds fresh and listenable in measured doses.  E.g, right now they're playing the Chariots of Fire instrumental, which I haven't heard in ages.

But about fiifteen minutes OK they committed one of the ultimate musical sins:  Neil Diamond.  (I can barely stand to type that name.)  Hey, Rupert Holmes over and over may get on our nerves, but I'll take 20 Pina Coladas over one Heartlight any day.

At least for today (and perhaps beyond?), they've turned into an AC...a broad one that plays some very familiar stuff and still plenty of uptempo 80's,  but also some surprises of both the "oh wow" and "oh no!" varieties.  On the whole -- assuming today is representative of what's coming up -- 91.5's music mix is still way more listenable *overall* than Columbus's existing AC's.  But not as listenable or uptempo as the music mix in some of the retail stores I shop in.

Regardless, can we please boot ND off the air, never to hear his musical pomposity again??  Lionel Richie is bad enough, but ND is intolerable.  Please, no more ND.  Please!

Followup 8:40pm: 4 or 5 good songs, then (gulp) "Even the Nights are Better" by Air Supply (no, the nights apparently AREN'T better, at least not at 8:40 pm Tuesday).

Hey you could always tune in and hear it say "positive and uplifting K-Love" :) Some would take Air Supply over that.

XMatt..

I hate Air Supply..But you are right.

Roo,

Seems like Robb was running things after noon today. He was doing the ID's, and lots of adjustments were going on. Alot like Sunday morning, into the afternoon. The music cut in and out much more than usual, and static came and went. Later this evening, the old playlist came back and so did Chelsea. I bet something is going to happen shortly. I bet we both will not like it.

But overall, the afternoon tunes rocked. There were some real sappy ones, but he dug out some stuff I have not heard in 15 years. I had it cranked most of the time. Only a handful of music he played after lunch came off the old list. I totally agree with Harry in the other thread. Why not give this a shot? Nobody else's ratings are any better who play this type of stuff, so why not reincarnate 92X? They played it all, the alternative with the Top 40.

It is gonna suck when it goes away....I can't bear to go back to the Brew.

I love their variety and listen whenever I'm in the car. It's a bit tough to pick up on the walkman, but, no other complaints about the signal. I hope he keeps the 80's as well, there's more going on here than LZT, Sunny, and the Brew!

Roo,

I was somewhat understaning in your ND issue, but now fully understand.

He played Barbra Streisand.

THAT is radio at it's worst.

wow. I am still sick in my gut.....Make it go away.....

Josh and Cat -- Totally agree! (Although, I must admit there is one long-lost Streisand semi-hit from the early 70's that was somehow a great listen, namely Stoney End. It was very upbeat, didn't really sound like Stresiand, and was written by the great Laura Nyro.)

Anyway, today 91.5 is thoroughly back to that weird blend of 50% super-sap and 50% good-to-great. At this point I really wouldn't be surprised if Bette shows up, maybe with Kenny Rogers and Anne Murray tagging along. But like yesterday, Robb will probably exit the "studio" soon and everything will be back to the "original" sound...at least until tomorrow.

Does the "K" in K-Love happen to stand for Kinks, Carole King, or Killing Joke? If so, then I'm all for it.

And Nu_Roo_2, wow, so you're a Laura Nyro fan, huh?! Do you have ANY IDEA how many songs from her incredible albums I'd play if I had a station?!!! I saw her in Chicago, summer of '71, an unbelievable night filled with a magic that I'll never forget. Much as you like 91.5, or at least used to like 91.5, imagine how much better it would be with a regular dose of Ms. Nyro and those three K's up there.

Please, call our stinkeroo stations, everybody! And e-mail Robb. Help me out, but much more importantly, help THE MUSIC out.

Sounds incredible!  I wish I had had the opportunity to see her perform.

BTW, tonight the person who's been live on Bizarro 91.5 recently said, "I'm not Robb, I'm Martin."  (For the record the radio was low-volume at the time, so I'm not 100% sure the name was Martin.)

I had to ditch 91.5 for a bit today when "Morning Train" came on. Ugh! I don't care how many weeks it was #1, it's still suitable only for Muzak in my opinion. "The Lover in Me" is more to my liking by Sheena. At least it has a good beat and isn't sappy.

Today was the first time I can remember hearing anything by Hall & Oates, which was a refreshing change. How any 80s format could overlook them is pretty hard to figure, but "Everything Your Heart Desires" today was the first thing I have heard by them on there. It's about time! Hopefully, we will be hearing more from them.

I hope so. Last night I heard these five songs in succession:

That's What Friends Are For
Where Do Broken Hearts Go
Love Is The Answer (England Dan and John Ford Coley)
One In A Million You
Baby, Come Back (this one sounded like hard rock compared to the others)

Now, I can't swear these are the exact songs, but the set is very similar to one I heard last night. And I did definitely hear all those songs on 91.5 yesterday.

Steel yourself for Michael Bolton (if it hasn't already happened).

Maybe Rob is testing the market for the alternative community. Allowing his format to become disco/techno/dance. Similiar to Energy 92.7 FM in Arizona. They started out playing 80's and a mix of 70's prior to switching to techno/dance/disco format. Columbus does have the second largest alternative lifestyle in the USA and no station comes close to supporting if you want to count WNCI. What do you guys think. I could be wrong of course. After working for POWER 107 it was discussed with the PD (Paul Long) aka Paul Strong but he didn't want anything to do with while under Blue Chip Broadcasting.

I seriously doubt Robb will stick with the 80's or light rock format. I could be wrong, but this station has plans for something MUCH different. I do believe he is still, in fact, testing the Columbus market and is only playing what he is now because he personally likes it. Unfortunately, he's not returned my e-mails...so I don't know for sure.

Anyway, if you check out this site you will see a station for sale in Taos, NM, you can see how a non-comm can be run as a commercial station ... in fact, this doesn't sound much different than what Clear Channel is doing in Dallas right now.

I hope you're wrong, and that perhaps Robb's thinking along the lines Dirty discusses. But unfortunately you're probably right. I have noticed the emails have stopped, whether as responses or broadcast emails.

What's the source for that data?  And what exactly does "second largest" refer to?  % of residents who are gay? I'm skeptical.

It was data issued a while back. I can try to look it up and see the source. If we are not the second we are least the third. Which sometimes I find hard to believe being that the young crowd in Columbus is moving to bigger cities. Who knows now-a-days.

Gee, I've always thought WBNS and 97.1 have been very strong in their support of "GoBucksism."

Of course you guys realize this music stuff isn't going Re: What's up with 91.5?
