What's Up With The Buzz?

instigator said:
Is that your arguement Rob? I guess Hip Hop can't be sold either considering the Buzz was just #1 and they changed the format to ryth CHR. According to you Rob I guess dance and Hip Hop are a waste of time...I'm surprised you don'tr currently hold a job in radio...you're as closed minded as radio has become.

Apparantly not and, if you read my posts when the new format came to light, I was quite critical of Equity for dumping Urban in a primarily urban market. There was no voice of the Inner city until 99.3 went RCHR. Now, they have none again. Trust me when I say that Urban, not dance, was the reason people listened to The Buzz. Sales, of course, is a different monster. To that end, Gary was right in pulling the plug. He wants the maximum return on his investment and that he hasn't gotten from 99.3/105.5.

Plus, I do agree with Up N Down in his/her assessment that all stations are his to protect his "goose that lays the golden egg", WAYV/WAIV. But alas, it was a tough sell. So, out with the dance and urban and in comes the mainstream (read also: safe, bland, vanilla, non-threatening to the franchise player).

I don't know about revenue when 99.3 was dance, but as rap / hip-hop they couldn't sell it... even though it was often #1.... urban stations are hard to sell in most markets... but I'm guessing dance would not be too easy either... but better than urban... I think Boss97 and Q-102 circa 1991/2 had a great mix of dance and pop... that being said... the powers at Equity do not "care" about this station.. it is there for one reason... to protect WAYV... sure Gary will take the money that it generates... but as soon as he thinks there's a threat to his flagship he uses this stick as a pawn, and he would flip it again if there was someone that he thought was a threat (notice the timing of the change to Kiss... just when Access.1 got sold)... Kiss will never do anything in the market that's inovative nor will he sink any money into it... it's there, and that's all it will ever be.

So Sad but So true. The Buzz was similar, it was just there, but sounded pretty good and rated well due to the demos of the area. But I guess it had to Bill and it didn't

Rob I couldn't disagree more. This move is going to hurt WAYV. I guarentee that 99.3 and 95.1 will be sharing an audience now. Both will drop in the next book. Instead of being number one and three I see number 3 and 5 or six. Maybe I'm an idiot but sales people will be able to sell a mainstream 6 bettter than an urban one in a market that is very urban and has many minorites? Atlantic City, Pleasantville ,Egg Harbor Tws. and so on are at least 30% black and 30% Hispanic.....I guess radio has not graduated from the 70's with the unsaid (out loud) theory "blacks and latinos don't spend money esp. young ones". It's ashame radio doesn't move past this blatently wrong and predjudice theory.
BTW Rob if you want to make a bet bring it....99.3's change will hurt WAYV's ratings not protect it...there will be a drop ...

30%/30% is way off...the population of the demos in question is not nearly that high.

12+ Population:
315,700
Ethnic Comp:

Black: 12.7
Hispanic: 10.5

I stand corrected. Regardless 99.3 was still number one. Maybe it's an age bias as well. But if A 14 year old girl is listening to the buzz in the car who's driving? Duh advertisers think about it.

instigator... I do agree that sales people should be able to sell it.. but it's the buyers that are not willing to buy it... I promise every sales person of that station has faced the "I don't want the kind of person that listens to that station in my store" mentality... it's very very hard to tell them that not only gangsters listen to this station... and hell... if the gangster has a $20 in his/her pocket and wants to buy something... SELL IT TO THEM!!! but it's much easier said then done...

A drop, perhaps... but not as much of a difference as you might think. What I do see is Kiss FM becoming to Generation Y as WAYV became to Gen X (my generation). As The Buzz/Kiss FM stays around and Gen Y gets older, they will change and become the AYV for the next generation.

As far as sales people go, the truly good ones can sell ice cubes to an Eskimo. Unfortunately, in a small market like AC, you get what you pay for. I don't think Gary is offering top dollar to bring in a "cash in the bank" sales staff.

I Know..old therad but anyone else notice? 99.3 has basically moved Back to Rhythmic. The pop/Rock Songs are almost completly gone from the station. I guess it must have eaten in to WAYV too mcuh.

Either that, or they realised the stations were more popular as The Buzz and made a very boneheaded move in blowing up RCHR there in the first place.

Simple... Gary made an assumption or got misinformation about Atlantic switching one of their stations to CHR and jumped the gun... then he realized that he is competing with his own station directly and that his rocker is getting slammed by the MGM/JSE combo.... the funny thing is that he had to pay to use the KISS name and now he's going back to urban music.... hehe...

That is funny because he is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cheap...I know from working for him. He now love the Eagles because he heard they go after the quater back.

I don't know what station you people were listening to, but I turned on 99.3 Kiss-FM a few days ago when I was in AC, and I heard plenty of pop acts. I only turned on the station sporadically and I heard the likes of Britney Spears, Fergie, and Gwen Stefani among other acts that have no place on an Urban station. Now I'm looking at the playlist and seeing acts like Pink, Leona Lewis, Jesse McCartney, Christina Aguilera, Nickelback and even Miley freakin' Cyrus. While perhaps they are leaning a bit more Urban than they did immediately after the switch, I'm still hearing a lot of crossover between Kiss and sister station WAYV. Come January, I fully expect to see Kiss's ratings plummet. The smart thing to do would be to revert back to what worked shortly thereafter. They forgot the old adage: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I can't wait to see the ratings on this one... NO WAY Equity has the number 1 spot 12+, and I dont think 'AYV is going to beat 'FGP (W 25-54) either... The format will probably go more Urban after Gary takes his beating... I just hope the ratings beating converts to lost sales and lower rates... Serves you right Gary... Crusher is right... "If it ain't broke... "

BTW I didn't say Kiss was going back URBAN. It's going back RHYTHMIC. URBAN and RHYTHMIC are DIFFERENT. Similar but DIFFERENT the songs Don't Belong on Urban but DO Belong on Rhythmic. Nickelback Miley Cyrus get almost ZERO Airplay now.

But they *are* playing Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours," Taylor Swift's "Love Story," Nickleback's "Gotta Be Somebody," and even Matt Nathanson's "Come On Get Higher."

Is it strange to anyone else that they haven't added September Cry For You or Lady Gaga Just Dance. It might seperate them from AYV a little bit more.

They play them in the middle of the night just to keep the record companies happy...typical Equity.
