What's wrong with the audio on DRC-FM?

During the last several days I've when I've been listening to DRC-FM I've noticed the audio cutting out. The song (or commercial) will be playing and then there will be brief silence and then back to normal. At first I thought it was a problem with my car radio, but then I noticed it on the radios in the apartment. I figured I'd post this here since their PD reads this board and then she can let the CE know about the problem.

It's not just you. Rob Ray had problems during his 6 PM show on Saturday evening. He goes to play a song and then nothing but dead air for at least 2 minutes or so, then throwing to commercials.

Wonder if this has anything to do with the "RDS issues" that Grahame Winters said are holding up the launch of the web stream? Is that possible? The RDS display hasn't shown anything but "The Biggest Hits Are On DRC-FM" for about two weeks, and yes.com no longer logs the station either.

Between 11am and 12 noon I heard it doing a several random static-filled drops in the audio but nothing lasting any long duration.

Around 2:05PM today they went off the air completely in the middle of a song. Was like that for about a minute. Then they came back on. Same song playing.

On behalf of Necrat...

1. Haven't you ever heard of the phrase "technical difficulties"?

;)

It's more like a cluster---- now. It's been like this for well over a week, as far as I know.

Its the usual incompetence we've come to know and love out of WDRC

Yeah, I noticed it about 9pm last night while flipping through the dial. Song that was on skipped out for about three to four seconds. Also, sounds like the audio is being broadcast on two tin cans. I would mention something about the incompetence of WDRC, but I get in trouble when I do!!!

That was during the satellite-delivered Charlie Tuna '70s show. I've often noticed inferior sound quality on that show and on Tom Kent's weekday syndicated show in that timeslot. Maybe the problem was in the feed.

If I were to make a guess as to the problem with WDRC audio I would have to say
it is a problem with their studio to transmitter link (STL)
I do not know if they have a microwave link or using EQ phone lines or T1 or some other flavor
of phone or internet to get the audio to the transmitter site. sometimes it is very hard to get the phone company to work with the Engineer to get things cleared up if it is a no and off problem. I did notice a few times when the audio dropped out, when the audio returned it sounded like lower quality maybe a feed over the internet lower bit rate.
What ever is happening the audio seems to drop twice and than return for a number of minutes
and than drop twice again.

The audio drops and skips are an issue with the phone company. We're aware of it, we hate it even more than you do - but right now we're at the phone company's mercy as our engineers work with them to fix the problem.

Maybe you could use my AT&T DSL line, no problems at all in two years! :D

Seriously, I hope it gets fixed soon. The audio's been great ever since that tune-up a few years ago. But when I got in the car last night and heard Eddie Money singing "Take me ho-- ... -ight, I don't wanna let you ... -orning light," I bailed out and switched to Sirius XM!

Grahame thank you very much for taking the time to inform the board about the audio problems
I know first hand it is not easy to work with the phone company. As I take care of a number of stations in the Bridgeport/ Norwalk area on the engineering side. I enjoy the station.

The biggest problem is that all the "old hats" that had the knowledge have retired and the young pups don't have any idea. I dread the thought of having to use a telco line for any station these days.

If DRC-FM doesn't use microwave, likely due to terrain, they are at the mercy of these outside forces. While I'm certain this will get resolved the question is just how quickly. I recently talked to one station that got hammered during Irene and they had to come up with some creative fixes to get things up until cards could be repaired / replaced.
