I worked at both WCRV-Washington and WFMV Blairstown back in the early-mid '70's. Nick DiRienzo was the owner, and Chuck Bettyeman was the PD of the FM. And yes, we sort of were a farm team for WEEX. Another notable who worked there was Rod Fritz, of Fox Newsradio and Boston fame these days. I managed to go FROM WEEX to WCRV (part-time at WEEX to Full time at WCRV, and then on to WAEB and some other places.
One summer afternoon, there was an "incident". The Washigton station was in a bungalow house on Rt 31 north of town. The offices were on the upper part of the split level, and the studios on the ground floor. The transmitters were in the basement, right under the bathroom.
I had a 30-min news block at 5pm, during which time, the jock would leave the studio and go for a break, usually including a bathroom break. The commode in the bathroom had a faulty valve, and oftentimes the water would not shut off. No problem....unless the works got stopped up. Well, that's what happened....and the toilet ran and overflowed for a half hour.... right above the transmitters.
I finished the newscast....and smelled ozone. I opened the basement door....and heard the sound of water cascading over the transmitters, which sparked and burst into flames as I went to check out the situation. (We won't mention just "what" was also floating down the stairs from the stopped-up commode.) I hit the *OFF* switch, grabbed a fire extinguisher, and put the fire out.
Since there was a lot of smoke, the fire company came and took me and another staffer to the hospital to get checked out. A few puffs of oxygen, and I was fine. Two weeks later, the boss dropped an envelope on my desk with a, "This is for you." It was the bill from the hospital! I put out his fire, and he expected me to pay for my treatment! Ahhhhhh....small market radio!
