WHDH Jingle Package Posted to YouTube

I hope this board allows a link. Someone in Germany just posted the WHDH jingle package demo from TM. The Jess Cain/Tom Doyle/Larry Glick/Eddie Andeleman/Top Hour beds/Cashcall/ Skyway Patrol etc. I loved this package. I hadn't heard it since the late 80's but I know every note and nuance. I produced thousands of promos and elements with it back in the day so I should know.

A few highlights:

Cut 35 is a Skyway Patrol traffic bed. When they made this cut they were using a keyboard to tap out nonsense morse code in the background. I'm a a radio ham (KS1A) so I wrote out the letters for "Go Patriots" in code, and that's what the code says in this cut. :) I don't think anyone ever noticed.

Made in Dallas at TM. We sat with Tom Merrimen at a piano and he banged out 4 or 5 notes till we likes the logo for "W" "H" "D" H". Once we liked the 5 notes, he said "good". He went away with a bottle of whiskey, and 3 days later had written it ALL. Then 3 days watching it being performed and voila! :)

Here is the YouTube link to the jingles:

Does anyone have an MP3 or link to the "best show in Boston" package? I really liked those. And didn't I hear that on both WCOZ and WHDH? Not at the same time IIRC.

WHDH (AM) deserved a better fate.

When what was left of the Herald-Traveler sold the station to Blair it may have become bigger than anytime in its history.

Blair went to a soft Top 40 format that was personality driven and it took off.

But the station was wounded because one listener HATED the format change from MOR. The listener was one Thomas Austin Yawkey and he was so angry with the switch he moved the Red Sox to WMEX which agreed to become MOR. This happened at the end of the 1975 regular season and WMEX took over for the playoffs.

Jess Cain almost left for WMEX and Blair simply gave Jess a blank contract to stay at 850.

When Jess retired in 1991 - HDH just fell apart and by 1994 would be gone forever.

Imagaine the ratings if Sox had stayed on HDH from 76to79.I thought that HDH had slowly gone more soft Top 40 from MOR in the early 70s. IN the first few years that Sox were on WMEX were the any night stations doing Sox games until MEX moved their transmiitter to Waltham?
I do rememeber that WBOS FM carried the 75 ALCS games . But were any 76 or 77 regular seasons games broadcast anywhere other than WMEX 1510AM?

And that was the last year 1510's programming meant anything to anyone, unfortunately.
Hell, even satellite Urban AC might do better than the existing wheel o' formats. ;D
Maybe even show up on a PPM? Maybe.

I know WPLM had the Sox in 83-84 as I board op'd them on WHAV...and our network feed was a giant boombox tuned to WPLM. The signal was rock solid, which kind of amazed me considering the distance from Plymouth to Haverhill.

WWEL had the Sox for a couple of years until it became WXKS - I think WPLM also came on board then and would become the flagship when WITS went belly up.

I worked at WHAV from 1984 to 1987, and I too remember the giant boombox atop the rack outside the studio. One night I was board opping a Sox game when the signal started dogfighting and was overpowered by co-channel WPLR New Haven. Quickly played some PSA's while implementing plan B (calling the Campbell Sports Network's emergency phone feed number to get the game feed that way). Also had to be quick to pot the boombox feed down as sometimes a WPLM jingle would air before they sent it back to the game. I also remember listening in cue to Ken Coleman's poetry that aired on 'PLM at 6:30 PM weeknights.

Oh what memories.

You must have replaced me as I left the first time in the fall of 84. It was good board op training to keep the WPLM shotgun jingles off the air.

Yep..even in the 80's they tried to save a few bucks. You'd think with making a sizable investment to carry the Sox and the sales potential it had, they would have at least invested in a 5K loop to Plymouth. IIRC, the big cost was the installation, keeping it on was only 30-40 bucks a month (in 1980s dollars), depending on grade of line and distance. (Toll test). I don't remember if you could "suspend" the service during the off-season and have it reactivated with the same circuit number. Anyone remember?

The old WWEL-107.9 broadcast Red Sox night games in 1976, 1977, and 1978 (but not day games).

After 1978, the station was sold and the new owners decided not to continue with the simulcasts.

That's when WPLM-99.1 and WHAV-92.5 (now WXRV) came aboard as affiliates (I think their AM sister stations had been Red Sox affiliates starting in 1976).
