Thanks to gr8oldies for the original comment that spurred this.

WNOX ('NOX, The X, etc.) has been up and running now for about three weeks. Are you overwhelmed, underwhelmed, or just plain whelmed?

I think they have done pretty good. To start a news talk format from scratch in only a few weeks they sound pretty good. They seem to have done pretty good on sales side too. A lot of local advertisers. Remember this was not hooking up an Ipod to a STL. I would give them a B+ With an A for conduct.

I agree, coach. The first week sounded like they were wondering what they got themselves into. They seemed to be having decent content this week.

With all of the Knox County stuff, though, they're ceding dominance to 98.7 in Oliver Springs and the WHOLE tri-county area. It won't be long until Rush Limbaugh will be signing books at the Oliver Springs WalMart.

I remain whelmed.

With such underwhelming response, it's looking like Knoxville radio is slowly returning to 'meh'.

The technical sound is better but not perfect. Unfortunately, the morning show is destined to have 55 and over numbers.

Who else is listening to talk radio?n By definition it skews 55ish. I bet Walker Johnson is 55 plus.

You probably need to add at least ten years or so to that age. Walker Johnson's wife was one of my teachers while I was in school and I graduated from high school in the late '70's. In fact, my older sister had Mrs. Johnson when she was in school also and she graduated in the early '70's. There is no way that either one of them are just a few years older than I or the same age as my sister.

Walker has more than 40 years of experience being a 21 year-old.

As far as the morning show on 100.3 goes, it just sounds - so small town, I guess. I always root for the local guys to do well - but I think in terms of quality HHH and Dave blow this production away. Maybe I'm missing the heritage (here only 6 years), but those two guys remind me of Bartles & Jaymes. When I do listen I'm half-expecting to hear how the hog futures are going.

On a related note - this isn't about the morning show per se, but once last week at 5:00 a.m. when WNOX was coming off an hour of Coast to Coast, I heard an announcement "2 minutes to Fox News" - and there was 2 minutes of completely dead air until the news report ran.

Having a big stick is worthless unless you know how to use it.

As of the start of my shift today at the Oliver Springs WalMart, Citadel had done nothing about the heralded Coalfield sales office/outhouse. Maybe the trade for sanitized blue water didn't materialize. Or maybe they're waiting for the heat to die down so the place won't smell so bad all the time.

Ed and Bob would really one-up HHH if they'd beat him to doing Tri-County Swap 'n Shop. Maybe they could call it East Tennessee and parts of Virginney and Kentucky Swap 'n Shop. With that big a signal, the could screen out the non-working lawnmowers for sale and just advertise the good working ones. And stretch it to two hours, even.

I guess to listen to some of the folks on the board here, I'd have expected the new WNOX to hit the ground with a super-polished sound, full news department, and other aspects that were supposed to have brought Citadel to it's knees by 6:15am on the first day. What we have is the A list talkers and a pretty decent news department on a lousy signal (but still good in places like West Knoxville..at least that's been my mobile experience, and a second-tier talker with no news department on a big signal which covers all the hoots and hollers. Thousands of people transplant themselves to Knoxville every year, and they don't remember the heritage. I wish the local boys well, but IMO what's missing if they want to be the number one News Talker is 1) a better morning show 2)better production and imaging and 3) an actual news department. If Mr. Pirkle is biding time with News Talk while putting a Frog killer together, then I guess that's understandable.
P.S. What is a bail bond company doing advertising on a news-talker?

If they're planning on picking up a few more people from Old Kingston Pike, it could be a trade!

I guess you could say that's truth in advertising.... literally! ;D

It's nice they got the buy from the bail bond company, but IMO not the best targeting.

Hey, a news/talk listener is more likely to be an upscale white collar criminal!

I'd love to know what the end of their jingle is. Seriously. I can guess, but it's more fun to imagine it as "Reunitey, reeeeunite you Anna Lummwah"
