When WINZ Flips back to Sports... the AM options are?

Miami can barely support two sportstalk stations. Having a total of 4 stations in the market is overkill. If CC goes ahead with flipping 940 AM, it most likely will be for cost cutting measures. They could care less how many stations have the same format. Its purely pathetic that they would try fighting over a very small piece of the sports radio pie. CC easily forgets how they failed the first time with sports on 940 almost four years ago. What makes them think that they will be any better the second time around? An automated station without local programming stands no chance vs. two established sports talk stations with local hosts. CC is better off with progressive talk that they have now.

OK so it sound like if they switch to sports they're just basically running computer programming just to keep the transmitter running.
Ratings simply won't matter.
Ratings do not mean jack to CC. All that matters to them is the bottom line. The purpose of this flip is to run things on the cheap, and to put the few remaining people out of work, ala CC style. Automation and voicetracking is the rule at CC. Live and local to them is like pouring alcohol over an open wound. ;D ;D ;D

Ratings are as important for Clear as for any other major radio group.

While there are stations that do well without ratings, they are mostly the brokered religious and ethnic stations that we see in many markets.

On the other hand, an AM today, particularly an English language one, in Miami has limited usefulness. The key os to do some kind of programming that will attract even a small audience and run it cheaply. There is no place for a costly major production on AM in this market.

>>The key os to do some kind of programming that will attract even a small audience and run it cheaply>>

Does that include being the 4th sports station in a market?

Probably. They can bundle it with other stations in a package for efficiency.

It's tough being saddled with an English AM in Miami today... even in Spanish, only two or three have any impact and significant revenue.

Premiere Radio posted their latest FSR update, with no mention of WINZ. Looks like it's still progressive talk for now.

Barry Jackson reported today Mid April for the start of fox sports 940 and also said that CC is not acknowledging that they are going to flip it

And who would really care if CC does this??? WINZ-AM has been in the ratings basement since it was sold to CC and its news-talk format flipped. CC will never invest in 940 since it would cannabalize 610's ratings.

According to jimjacksonblog.com

9am-Noon: Dan Patrick Show
Noon-3pm: Jim Rome Show
3pm-7pm - Fox Sports Radio's Chris Myers Show or some possible local programming
7pm-10pm - FSR's Petros & Money

Ugh a recap show for the late night shift! I loved when Sedano was on the 3rd shift when I worked graveyard

The same blog (www.jimjacksonblog.blogspot.com) said it'll start either April 13th or 20th.

As far as a recap show for Fox, that's just awful programming. You may not get a lot of money out of overnights, but you certainly get the most clearance. You would think that would hold some value. I mean Premiere has made tons of cash over the years with Art Bell & George Noory.

On Sedano's stint as the overnight host on FSR, I too listened when I got up at 4am to get ready for the day (when you're old you sleep less boys- just a warning). Pound for Pound it could have been the most entertaining show I've heard in any time slot. He was the perfect person to engineer the, "Morning Zoo," at night. His crew of Karen Kay, Marcel Hall & Josh Guers were as good an on air and behind the scenes supporting cast as there was. I too miss it. His show on WAXY is good because he's talented. But, it's not close to being as good as that show was. That's probably why he'll end up on mornings at WAXY. He knows how to work with an ensemble cast.

Though, I wonder if there's any shot Clear Channel will mend fences with him and bring him back to WINZ?

I didn't know sports stations could be dual affiliates of ESPN and FSR.

It wasn't always this way with 610. Just about every station CC has got under their control in this market, they have screwed them up. Yes, you can argue that an english language AM is a tough sell in this market, but being the only english language news-talk station, there really is no excuse to have lousy ratings. If CC would have kept the station with more local programming instead of voicetracked crap that they currently run on there, the ratings would be better than what they currently are getting. Localism always beats out automation anyday. ;D

Right, but localism costs money. It's a catch 22.

The non-Hispanic white in the market is comparable to cities ranked about 40th in population.... like Indianapolis o Providence or Norfolk. The talkers in those cities tend to be syndicated (there is no such thing as a voice tracked talk station) in nearly all dayparts. And they do very well.

The issue is, simply, that, no matter what is done, the talk audience pool is very limited. Local talk is very expensive, and, given the lack of audience, it's not practical to do local programming. WIOD has not had "good numbers" for a long, long time. And those days are not returning.

Don't know if this was an April Fools joke or not but at around 7pm a commercial with someone I assume the PD talking saying Friday the rumors are over 940 Winz becomes a sports station.
