Where are the rock hits?

I'm not saying Weezer can't get a hit on their own its just with the Lil' Wayne version of the song, I'm sure they'll have a little bit greater success

I meant nothing toward your response. Lil Wayne can be substituted with any must-be-on-every-hit hip-hop artist out there...say, Ludacris, Pitbull, Lil Jon, Kanye West....and on and on.

By the way, anyone else hate the term "featuring"? Why not give proper credit? "Apologize" is not Timbaland's song, it is OneRepublic's remixed by Timbaland. Shouldn't it be titled: OneRepublic "Apologize" [Timbaland remix]?

Now it seems that CHR has entered a phase that is mostly pop and rhythmic titles with the occasional Hot AC crossover thrown in.

Can you give examples of a couple of recent Hot AC's that have crossed over into CHR?

Keep in mind there's an accoustic Rock element to Travie Mccoy's "Billionaire", which pretty much takes its cues from the remixed version that came out last year to Jason Mraz's "I'm yours". There's a Rock chorus courtesy of Haley Williams on the song "Airplanes", and there's a pure Pop record from Katy Perry. Those are the Top 3 records at the format right now.
There's also an Electro/Dance/Alterna-Pop record courtesy of La-Roux, as well as Dance/Pop from Usher, pure Pop from track Ke$ha, a collaboration featuring two superstar artists (Rihanna and Eminem), a nice crossover R&B/Pop ballad from Shontelle, a hot Rhythmic/Pop record from Jason Derulo, a fine Rhythmic song from Drake, two hot uptempo Dance/Rhythmic/Pop records from Taio Cruz, a pure Pop record from Lady Gaga (whose now a core artist on CHR), an upbeat Dance/Pop record from Enrique, a youthful Pop/Rock record from 3 Oh! 3 and Ke$ha, an Alternative Rock crossover ballad from Paramore, a Teen Pop sensation (Justin Bieber), a Dance record from David Guetta, and a good Rap title from Eminem.
That's the Top 20 at CHR/Pop this week and it makes for a good mix even though you won't find a lot of Rock product in there.

Excellent analysis. Indeed... CHR is quite eclectic these days.

Train - Hey Soul Sister
Script - Breakeven
Michael Buble - Haven't Met You Yet

I really hope Neon Trees "Animal" crosses over. It's fun, catchy and perfect for CHR. Looks like it's got some steam at Hot AC so we shall see.

When this happens and the song is remixed by another dj or producer, I drop the original name and just use the "featured" name as the original name. Why? Well because... lets say for example; Bailey ft Jodie Conner... or no, lets use David Guetta ft Wynter Gordon "dirty talk" for example. If David Guetta is the original producer, but the song is remixed by someone else like Laidback Luke or someone else, I wont even bother to put the David Guetta if someone else created the remix instrumental and put Wynter's vocals over it. I'd just use the singer's name, song title, then label the appropriate remix name in parenthesis.

It has, somewhat. Added at nearly 60 monitored stations. We are not monitored, but we have it in Power at about 75x a week.

Like You Do-Angel Taylor
The Only Exception-Paramore(personally can't stand, but it's going to be big for fall, sounds like Avril Lavigne)
Glitter in the Air-Pink
If It's Love-Train

Butlerguy, why aren't you monitered? What's your station?

Not monitored because of $$. We are a non-commercial high school radio station that is a rim-shot of Indianapolis, but this isn't typical high school radio. Many people can't tell we are high school and we compete very well against much stronger local commercial stations. Part of the reason is that myself and my assistant have been in commercial radio management, but still young enough to relate to the kids. I program and teach, he runs most of the business and news/sports coverage. We are 100% student jocks/voice tracked/news/sports unless for a reason someone has to step in at the last moment. We even run NexGen. As many of you know, Indy has a great tradition of many full power FM high school radio stations.

I would love to be monitored even if I had to send in a excel file each week. We used to subscribe and send album charts to CMJ, but its just not what we do. Mediabase would be ideal.

As I write this, we are ranked #3 on theindychannel.com A-List rankings for Indy's "Best FM Radio Station"! Look at our contour on Radio-Locator.com, we don't even touch 7/8 of the metro area!

Wow! So just like that, Orianthi disappears from Arizona hit radio! It was once on rhythmic KZON, top 40 KZZP, and adult top 40 KMVA. Now it's not even on KMVA! Well, it's still on KZZP but it's definitely falling down there. I'm sure some of the DJ's on KZON weren't too fond of mixing the original version of the song with rhythmic hits back when they used to do so. I don't think I've heard anyone else (any other station) try to mix it.

I'm sure OneRepublic welcomed the idea of Timbaland remixing (& having his name) in the credits, especially since the version without Timbaland is dryer than a popcorn fart.

I've also noticed that Scouting For Girls hit song gets plenty of airplay on XM 20 and Goom...but it hasn't charted anywhere at all. Same as Breakin Benjamin. Both on the rock side.

I agree with what a lot of what I see on this thread. There is some good rock product right now, mostly from the Alternative side. But it wouldn't fit on CHR, it's too artsy sounding. The rhythmic pop that dominates CHR today still sounds very hot. CHR doesn't need to force rock songs on the format in the name of variety.

I guess the ultimate answer is "in your 16 year old listeners iPod."

Punk-pop, emo-pop, indie-pop are all very popular but CHR tends to shy away and I'm not sure why. I may do an unscientific survey in the next few days to see what songs are on 14-18 yo iPods. Maybe I'm wrong, but I know when we added Neon Trees and Cartel with Heavy spins, I had more students say "oh wow" than when I added Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream".

Answer: The Rock stations where they belong.
It's over a month later & the closest thing to a newer Rock hit on the iTunes Chart is "Animal" by Neon Trees. In fact there's more crossover Country than ever on there people are buying for $1.29 a song.

I guess my thought is if we are using mass popularity of songs to figure out the next big hit, you will NEVER find it.

How could Weezer's last three singles all miss CHR? Have they lost that much cred? MTV & VH1 were spinning the heck out of some of them and pop radio thought they weren't good enough?

Unfortunately, I cannot afford testing. However, sometimes I think that is a good thing...I just unscientifically quiz the students in the hallways and the listeners that walk up to our tent at events.

Rock DEFINATELY belongs on CHR just as much as Hip Hop or Dance! Neon Trees is looking to make a hit on CHR, it's already being played at Z-100 the biggest CHR in the country and the best CHR in the country. Damn I hate it when I leave to go back to school no Z100.
