Where has Chris Baker gone??

OK, so my problem here, apparently, is that Dan Patrick (still using his birth name at the time) apparently no longer owned the station at some point, unless he's connected with El Dorado Broadcasters or Liberman in a way I don't know about.

So, the 2009 purchase would be a "return" to ownership for him, or am I missing something?

And why do I care so much about one small Texas radio station? :D

Yes, it's the second time around for Patrick the owner, although he's been "with" KSEV since it began. It's a long, complicated story; just ask Dan about it. He'd probably have a lot to tell you (when the legislative session closes, of course).

He's a radio talk show host AND a politician. I'd have to set aside a lot of time for storytelling. :D

Thanks for clearing that up, jd! Part of my problem in trying to nail this down is that the full applications stop being available at some point in the past on the FCC website, since they are mostly available only if they're filed electronically. You can see the applications, but not the full version of them if it's paper...

Haven't been to Texas for 15 years. Thanks for clearing some stuff up. Didn't realize he owned
the station(KSEV) twice.

That isn't borne out in FCC records, which show Patrick Broadcasting LP bought KSEV in late 2009 from Liberman Broadcasting (no relation to him as far as I know):

Wasn't aware of this!... It is a long, complicated story for sure.

Not bad Daytime coverage of Houston for a small Texas radio station:

http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pat?call=KSEV&service=AM&status=L&hours=D

The Night pattern lives lot to be desired because of the interference from WLW at night in some
parts of Houston.

It would have helped Dan tremendously if he could have held onto Rush. KSEV was one of the first major market radio stations to carry his show and the first time I heard his show. What is the story on that? Why did he lose Rush?

Well, small in that it's a locally owned (one man owned!) station in a world of big radio clusters.

Yeah, I'd also like to know how Dan lost Rush. Did CC poach him for KTRH or KPRC?

I'm guessing Dan lost Rush because Rush is so expensive Dan can't afford him. Rush's show is THE top rated radio show in the country, and buying it would cost Dan more than his entire annual budget. Can you imagine the rates Dan would have to charge to recoup the costs of buying that show? Ain't gonna happen on podunk swamp radio KSEV.

You may have a point...Premiere charges even the tiniest stations in unrated markets for Rush, and at some point, the cost may have gotten astronomical in a top 10 market like Houston.

Worth it? Quite possibly, but for a single owner station with a modest budget...maybe not.

So the Kansas City deal didn't work out?

Apparently not. I suppose it's possible it was just a rumor some people were stirring up to get the competition nervous or to get attention. Whatever happened, I hope things work out for him.

The way I remember it: Dan Patrick signed-on KSEV, then put Limbaugh on KSEV back when the general "wisdom" was that only local talk shows worked. This is back when Limbaugh was personally calling stations around the nation asking them to carry his show.

Limbaugh put KSEV on the map and Patrick bought KPRC-am, then put Limbaugh on KPRC because the pattern reaches more of Houston. Limbaugh was hot by then and his syndication company was (is) owned by Clear Channel.

Then Clear Channel came to town and bought the stations owned by the AM/FM company, including KTRH. They also bought KPRC from Patrick, and with the addition of Patrick's sale of KSEV to Liberman, Patrick became a milionaire and ran for office.

It was Clear Channel's plan to buy KPRC and move Limbaugh to KTRH, which they eventually did. Patrick then LMA'd KSEV, giving himself a radio platform again, then he eventually bought KSEV outright, along with the Dallas am.

That's the way I recall it happening. I'm watching the legislature closely these days and it's obvious that Dan Patrick is very involved in statehouse politics, so he probably doesn't have time for a radio show these days.

How much did Clear Channel pay Patrick for KSEV 700 and KPRC 950?

Don't consider that old radio combo a small Texas radio station, please.
