Where is the KENS-5 new newsguy?

Our long time news anchor, Chris Marrou, retired a few weeks ago, after 30+years on KENS channel 5, in San Antonio. Yeah, San Antonio. We're hardly ever mentioned anywhere. Anyway, a few days before the retirement, KENS 5 announced Marrou's replacement. Instead of choosing one of the other highly qualified and knowledgeable newscasters/co-anchors, who have been at KENS 5 almost as long as Marrou, the suits picked some Kansas boy! Its bad enough that the other TV stations newsreaders can barely pronounce street names or even know which part of town their own little McMansion is crammed into, now we have to endure some new kid from Kansas! I guess he was a lot cheaper than the seasoned talent that KENS 5 has on hand. But so far the new guy hasn't appeared. When's he gonna start, after slopping the hogs and milking the cows? Now the only news person with any real local knowledge left on local TV is a meteorologist! KSAT-12's Steve Browne has been here since the late 80's (?) and always has the most accurate forecast of all the weatherpeople. Browne can tell it like it is, for all parts of town, because here in San Antonio, it may be hailing softballs on one end of town, pouring down buckets in downtown, while the other end basks in tranquil, serene sunshine. Kansas! Ha!

I thought that the original announcement stated that the Kansas wonderboy was starting in January. Apparently, he needed time to slaughter the hogs and sell the farm! :D He also needs some time to start practicing the San Antonio names. Altogether now, "Bexar" is pronounced like "Bear", "DeZavala" is pronounced like "Days of Olive", "Zarzamora" has to be pronounced with a south-of-the-border accent, etc. Oh and don't forget the small town of "Green"! :D

If you give Jeff Vaughn a chance, I think you'll like him.

I worked with him at WDIV in Detroit and he's very sharp. He's also worked as an anchor in Amarillo, so I'm pretty sure he'll know a lot of the local pronunciations.

Why should we be forced to like a foreigner, when we have season, knowledgeable and experienced LOCALS who grew up here and worked their way up the ladder, only to be pushed back behind some psuedo-yankee? I wonder how many ratings sweeps he will last and which local evening news will take the number one spot? Anyway, who has the number one rating for local news here in town?

Newsmark --

I know San Antonio. I lived in San Antonio. And, Newsmark, San Antonio is no Amarillo!! :D

If you knew ANYTHING about the geography of Texas, you would know that San Antonio and Amarillo have very little to do with each other (except being in the same state). Heck, by your logic, Jeff should know even more about Denver because Denver is 100 miles closer to Amarillo than San Antonio is.

I lived in Dallas for 5 years and thought I know a fair amount about San Antonio. When I moved to San Antonio, I realized that I had absolutely no idea how the names were pronounced.

By the way, my opinion is that Fred Lozano and Vicki Buffolino should have been named the main anchor team at KENS. Send Sara Lucero and Deborah Knapp to mornings and noon.

I didn't mean to stir a hornet's nest. I've lived in Texas most of my life and I didn't intend to imply that Amarillo and San Antonio were near each other. But when you live in Texas and do news in Texas (even in Amarillo), you do learn things like how to pronounce "Bexar." You're right. That's not everything about San Antonio.

All I said was he's a sharp guy and I think you might like him if you give him a chance.

OK, fair enough, newsmark! If you're from Texas, then you understand. However, I lived in Dallas for five years, watched local news avidly, read the newspaper, and still didn't know how to pronounce "Bexar" correctly! But that's just my experience! YMMV!

Most people from outside Texas don't realize how big the state is. I'm constantly trying to remind people how far it is between various cities in Texas. Good grief, El Paso is even in a different time zone!

I think the point here is not to dump on Jeff, but really that there are very capable anchors at KENS in San Antonio who could have been promoted. For example, Fred Lozano has been around forever and has done a solid job over the years.

Sounds like another prepaid PR cheerleader and/or Kansasboy sycophant scanning the web in order to quell any double ungood bellyfeel. I guess anybody would do just about anything to get out of Kansas! And yes, this heat should be aimed at the suits, who probably don't even watch their own channel's newscast. But this is such a disgusting slap in the face to Mr Lozano and Ms Lucero for not being promoted to evening anchor, after all of the years that they have stuck to an ungrateful and inconsiderate employer. We sure have no shortage of those here in our world class tourist trap. And remember, We can all VOTE with our REMOTES!

Perhaps I'm missing something, but hasn't Ms. Lucero been the primary female evening co-anchor for several years now (since Deborah Knapp was switched from the 6pm to the 5pm newscast)?

Fred Lozano has to be getting close to retirement; I
remember him in the late '70s. At the time KENS had
Marrou, Maclovio Perez (weather), and Dan Cook (sports).
Has anyone come along who can top these guys?

How's the new guy doing? Jeanne Jakle had a flattering review, but then again I don't think she's ever said anything totally negative about anyone.
