Where Will Wease Resurface Come August?

After reading an earlier post of mine I’m having crow for breakfast. I was the one who wrote that I doubted Clear Channel would hire Wease at, or near, the salary he was making at WCMF. I also wrote that I thought Wease, along with some investors, might purchase some radio properties in Rochester. Obviously I was wrong on all counts.

I expected the media-hype over his return and I am certain that his show will generate listeners for the Fox.

Yet I still have to sit back and wonder how the other “talent” at Clear Channel must feel about the salary Wease is making. I’m talking about people who have been in the Rochester market for years like Chet & Beth and Lonsberry.

Say what you will, but ego makes up a part of broadcasting persona. And when you have people who have given years of their lives to make a station creditable only to find out that they are being paid less than the new guy, or gal, on the block, resentment can rear its ugly head.

It is very likely that the people I mentioned above were financially compensated for their years of service and to ease any possible hard feeling about Wease and his salary.

Anyways it will be interesting to see just how much of an audience Wease can generate for CC. Plus we will find out if terrestrial radio is as dead as some people claim.

CC Cares?

Do you really think that CC cares if Chet & Beth or Lonsberry have "hurt feelings" over Wease's hiring?

What do we really know about Wease's salary? All we really know is that CC outbid Entercom, and Entercom wasn't willing to come near what Wease made in his old contract that they inherited when they bought the station. Wease sure ain't gonna talk, and rumors are easy for management to deny.

I doubt that CC "compensated" any of the other egos in their stable. At this point, I'm sure they're more than willing to let Chet & Beth and Lonsberry to shop their talents when their current contracts are up. Any extra compensation for them is likely to be in the realm of "opportunity", i.e. extra cash or trade for personal endorsements.

"Do you really think that CC cares if Chet & Beth or Lonsberry have "hurt feelings" over Wease's hiring?"

It's anyone's guess what the local management thinks of Lonsberry, who's caused them no end of headaches and probably gets most of his $$$ from his Salt Lake City morning show in any event.

Chet and Beth, that's another story, they're the principal ratings cash cows for WHAM and most likely, while they might not necessarily command as much as Wease does given his ability to pull in all those 25-54 men, they'll be rewarded for everything they've brought into the CC till (which is undoubtedly plenty)...if they aren't being paid well already.

If Wease was "bringing in that money" why would entercom get outbid. Clear Channel did not know what the show made, Entercom did. Maybe Wease is not worth the near $600,000 that he makes. That's the rumor in the ad agency community. $600 balloons. Maybe Clear Channel over paid.

The Voice of the Common Man

I wonder how "the common man" would feel if he knew that his "voice" was making $600K + perks???

BTW, I suspect that the ad agency rumor mill has inflated the number. Either that, or Clear Channel way overpaid because my rumor mill says that Entercom wasn't anywhere near that neighborhood with their "final offer".

Roxalot said <Wease sure ain't gonna talk>

Anyone who really knows Wease knows he can't help but talk.

As the industry declines, many at the top feel that only the very big shows will be left, and they want to own them.

Are they over paying? Perhaps.

The alternative is to be out of the game. The trend line is that there will be very few local shows, plus server boxes of Voice Tracked automation, and syndicated National Shows. Think about it. Anybody out there see that trend reversing?

Remember 20 years ago? Remember live all night jocks, weekend talent, on EVERY STATION?
